Ham Sandwich In The MJM

By Greg L | 23 May 2007 | Prince William County | 10 Comments

The Ham Sandwich for Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney got another boost today with a front-page article, complete with a rather attractive photo of the candidate, in the Manassas Journal-Messenger entitled (in the print edition) “Ebert to face off with ham sandwich“. The incumbent Paul Ebert finally had no choice but to go on the record in the face of continuing media inquiries and has firmly refused Ham Sandwich’s challenge of monthly debates, calling Ham’s candidacy “ridiculous.” He’s clearly in the biggest political battle of his career as an elected official.

Ham’s candidacy is gaining significant traction from a national audience following the recent coverage on National Public Radio, and with such prominent local publicity the message is getting out to voters in Prince William County, Manassas, and Manassas Park that they will finally have a choice for Commonwealth’s Attorney. A write-in campaign depends on word-of-mouth in order to be successful, and recent coverage in the DC Examiner, on NPR, and now in the Manassas Journal-Messenger and the Potomac News is catapulting discussion of Ham’s candidacy from being a rare occurrence to the talk of the town. Soon, Ham’s name recognition will eclipse that of Paul Ebert, and an electoral victory will clearly be within reach.

Paul Ebert has refused to respond to media inquiries regarding this race for some time, and finally went on the record. Ebert isn’t going to debate Ham sandwich, regardless of whether Ham signs a pledge to conduct a “clean campaign.” His response in this article is dismissive, and while he had the opportunity to tell voters why he thinks he deserves their support this year, all he could muster is that since no one has faced him in an election in the past twelve years he must therefore be doing a good job. There’s a difference between getting elected by default and actually having support, which Ebert doesn’t seem to get. But it’s been a long time since Paul Ebert ever demonstrated to the voters why he deserves his job, and apparently he’s a little out of practice.

I think he’ll get plenty of that. Meanwhile, Ham Sandwich is earning support, gaining ever-increasing attention from the media and the voters, and building momentum. While Ham Sandwich is getting his picture on the front page of the local newspaper, Ebert’s quotes are buried on page two. That speaks volumes about how the dynamics in this race are all going Ham’s way.

UPDATE: Riley has more here.  Meanwhile, Manassas City Councilman Andy Harrover has some questions about Ham’s past in the post “Trouble in the Sandwich campaign?“  Hmmm.

Lettuce not jump on the Ham platter to quick -
mustarded some info on three American cousins -
“Hock”, “Diced”, and “Sliced”, and two from Italy -
“Capicollo” and “Prosicutto”. A mob connection?

Know they are all connected to “pork”.
Perhaps Ham even has a future in Congress.

    I’m loving this.

First, the hilarious thing about the MJM article was that the paper played along, getting their food critic to provide quotes.

Second, I cracked up when I read a quote from Greg about running a “clean campaign”.

Also, you have to admit that Ebert’s quote that he could “devour” his opponent was pretty funny, although I think you’ll can find some way to use that quote against him.

I remember George Allen somehow got savaged for saying he would still eat a ham sandwich.

Why don’t you just ban Charles, Greg, and end his suffering. He obviously hates you and cannot take anything written by you in any spirit other than vitriol. You’ll be doing him a favor.

The MJM endorsed Ebert over Ham Sandwich.

They sure did Watching. I guess Ebert (and the MJM) are worried. You know the MJM…they can’t stand printing real news or promoting investigative reporting. Ebert keeps things within their comfort zone.
