BVBL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND ANNOUNCEMENT

By Greg L | 24 June 2006 | Blogs | 5 Comments

I’ve established a legal defense fund to help with the costs for defending in the lawsuit that Steve Chapman filed against me. Please visit the website, and consider making an online donation. Every donation, large and small, will help to ensure a fair hearing in this important case which may have a significant impact on the ability of bloggers to criticize candidates for office.

There’s a new link on the right side of this page which will also take you to the legal defense fund homepage.

If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments for this post. I’ll be happy to answer them.

Why should we underwrite your legal defense of your libeling someone?

You know Steve Chapman graduated from high school, and his lawyers warned you that if you didn’t retract that claim, they’d sue you. Not only do you refuse to retract the statement, you told him to “bite me” when asked to substantiate your false claim.

Unless you can prove he dropped out of high school, which I doubt, it’s an open-and-shut case. There’s no way I’m going to help you pay for something you did wrong.

“Bite me!” Pay for your own lawyer.

It’s for you to prove libel, Stevie boy…and a very difficult road that will be. It’ll be a lot easier for Greg to find people to help him with his legal fees than it will be for you to even make basic legal expenses.

Of course, the previous anonymous is probably not Chapman, but one of his ghost writers…not his writing style.

    Anon,

There are those out there who believe that this case has broader implications than my own personal situation, and want to ensure that political free speech prevails. This is an opportunity for them to participate. Others may want to contribute for other reasons no less worthy.

If you don’t want to participate, that’s your choice.

And neither Steve Chapman nor his counsel have ever asked BVBL or myself to substantiate anything. Their demand letter and their pleadings are public record that have been posted on the internet. I invite you to review them so you can get your facts straight.
