FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY AWARDS
By Greg L | 9 July 2006 | Virginia House, Virginia Senate, Prince William County | 3 Comments
The BVBL Awards for Fiscal Responsibility by a PWC representative goes to Michelle McQuigg (House of Delegates) and Jay O’Brien (Senate), who did not insert earmarks for nonstate entities into the Virginia budget. It just makes sense to be both for lower taxes and lower spending. If all of our other representatives followed their examples, state spending would have been reduced by $37 million and the budget would have remained consistent with the spirit of the state constitution which prohibits public spending on charities. Although this isn’t a huge chunk of Virginia’s record $72 billion budget, that budget isn’t going to get any better if earmarks continue.
The Jim Moran “I’ll earmark the s*** out of it” Award for Fiscal Malfeasance goes to Senator Charles Colgan, who was the number four earmarker in the Senate, proposing amendments for over $7 million in additional spending. Although I like that the Manassas Museum is getting support, that shouldn’t be coming from the taxpayers.

Greg,
I don’t know if it is my computer or not, but I can’t read any of yuor stuff. Can you change the font or something?
I have a hard time reading what I am writing here. The color and the font are not good choices.
Sorry to complain, but if others can’t read your blogs they might not come back.
You have good things to say, but I can’t read any of it.
I would love to read about Rishell, but can’t.
I made a couple of changes that might help. I also noticed that your browser is a little out of date — upgrading might help, as well as improve your security. Let me know if any of my changes have helped.
Colgan just published a letter in the Potomac News touting all the spending he got for our area. The problem with this spending is that many people feel like Greg here — happy for example that the Museum is getting support.
But most don’t go that next step to decry that the government is doing the supporting. In fact, most think that is exactly what they want the government to do.
We need to change this mindset if we have any hope of reigning in spending. Somehow, we have to get the citizens to understand that just because something is good DOESN’T mean government should pay for it.
