The South (outside of urban/metro areas), the heartland (outside of those same areas) and even the more rural areas of traditionally blue states (MD, MA, and PA come to mind) tend to be conservative, and as such, vote Republican. These people make up a large part of the NRA, NASCAR Dads, and other groups that hold to conservative, or better yet, traditional values. So, it doesn't surprise me that the less-wealthy (outside of urban areas) would vote Republican.
