PATRIOTISM RESPONDS

Last night’s attack on the Manassas GOP Headquarters has outraged and energized Republicans in Manassas, and the overwhelming response is keeping local campaigns and the Manassas GOP awfully busy today. Local candidate Jackson Miller has recieved a ton of support, the Manassas GOP has been offered assistance for everything from helping to contact voters to guarding the building, and reporters have been calling pretty much non-stop. MCGOP Chairman Steve Thomas told me that he really appreciates the sentiments and the offers of assistance, and hopes this incident helps make it clear what’s really on the line in this election.
One group which has responded very strongly is the Virginia Citizens Defense League which endorsed Jackson Miller earlier that day. VCDL’s VA-ALERT issued a notice to over 5,000 Virginians last evening, and VCDL members have been offering their assistance and opening their wallets. The profanities scrawled on Jackson Miller’s campaign signs don’t sit too well with the VCDL membership which has strong representation from the veteran, active military and law enforcement communities. And the VCDL membership has a tradition of getting personnally involved in matters that concern them. This is another rallying cry for them.
This is the second incident of vandalism against the Manassas GOP Headquarters in recent years, and in each of these incidents a clear theme has been disapproval by homosexual activists. A recent Washington Post article has helped to inflame the community in regards to homosexual issues, and perhaps Jeanette Rishell’s anger and hostility displayed at a recent candidates debate has helped create an atmosphere which makes attacks such as last night’s more likely. This charged political environment has apparently sent some activists over the edge, and as we’ve seen before when radical homosexual activists go there, the results can be pretty ugly.
The end result of this stupidity is not likely going to help liberal causes in any way however. “F*ck Patriotism” as a slogan for the liberal homosexual cause is about as severe a self-inflicted head wound as I have ever seen, and local Republicans are angry, motivated and ready for the fight that matters — the one at the ballot box.
UPDATE: Apparently the vandalism continues.

Greg — now, it is pretty clear, you are milking this for political gain. What was done was not done by Liberals, but by vandals. Perhaps that is a meaningless distinction, but your absurd effort to try and impose group guilt on all people who oppose the Marriage Amendment or Jackson Miller for the actions of a few, the political views of which are unknown to you, shows that you are now trying to turn this into a political event. All people of good faith, liberal and conservative, are against this vandalism — the problem with your world view is that liberals are not accorded the notion of acting in good faith, but are lumped together as a group with a few vandals, who may not even be liberal.
Rishell had nothing to do with this vandalism, you know it, and ought to remove that statement from your web and apologize

Did you see the pictures? Did you see what they wrote? Doesn’t take a detective to figure out on which side of the debate they are on, or for which candidates they would be voting. Let’s not forget who was harmed here. I would imagine that walking up on this scene, seeing the filth that was written, some of which Greg has had the good taste not to print, was very upsetting to the mothers, wives and grandmothers who make up the BRRW. Imagine if these “activists” hadn’t stopped at the signs? Based on the anger with which the damage was done, and the brazen nature of the crime, is it a leap to think that they may have entered the HQ, while it was occupied? What if one of these ladies had walked up on the perps, while they were vandalizing the signs?
This is something that needs to be known. Liberal activists (both good and bad) are stained by this. While I would hope that no democrat campaign staff were associated (and would be disappointed to discover that they were), there is a stain upon them as well. I think Matt Harrison did a good thing by coming out quick and condeming this, but Steve Thomas was right to say that it “reflects poorly on the opposition” because it does, as well as saying these actions “bring discredit on the Democratic party”. It wasn’t Republicans out there doing it. Even if the party wasn’t behind it, per se, there is little doubt which party these vandals are supporting. Democrats need to allow the Manassas Republicans their outrage. The Manassas GOP was the party that was criminally attacked.
Well, as I pointed out, signs posted at my home were vandalized, in the past, the matter was discussed by me in a letter, and I heard no word of apology from the Republicans. And, I didn’t have a problem with that, because the only people who should apologize are the people who did the act. It is absurd to impose group guilt on Democrats, but group guilt is something the leaders of this site seem to enjoy, when this was obviously not an official act of the Democratic party or liberals.
As for the possiblity of attack, signs posted at my private home were vandalized and is it a leap for me to think that, if this act had taken place when my children were outside, they could have been ensnared in a confrontation and injured.
The blame for this act lies with criminals. I’ve been a political activist in this community for several years now on behalf of Democratic party efforts. Am I to take the blame for a group of vandals whom I don’t know and wouldn’t give the time of day to if I did because you’ve decided the entire opposition is to be blamed for anything that is done to a Republican sign. No, sorry I’m not.
As for whether the request is an official request for an apology from the Risehll campaign, it isn’t. It is a request for an act of simple descency on your part. But, the political advantage you seem to want to try and ring out out of this will, as usual, trump the need to treat Liberals like human beings.

No, you are not to take the blame, as you have condemned the action, and I did not mean to say that you should, and I condemn the actions of individuals who defaced your signs. The point that I am trying to make here is that when things like this happen, when hateful individuals take actions like this, it hurts the cause of the group they are activists for. I’ll give you an expample, that you might be able to grasp. I am pro-life. I work for pro-life causes, push pro-life candidates. If someone vandalizes an abortion clinic, it gives the pro-life cause a “black-eye”.
I don’t hold Rishell responsible, regardless of the words she used at the debate. She didn’t say “go out and deface my opponent’s signs”.
People are responsible for their own reaction to what they hear. If speech disturbs you, that’s YOUR reaction. If it gets you mad, that is how YOU respond. If it makes you want to commit vandalism, that’s how YOU express your feelings.
Democrats love to blame republicans for all sorts of bad things based on words, like blaming Bush for saying “bring it on”, or when Clinton tried to blame Rush Limbaugh for the Oklahoma bombing.
It was wrong when they did it, and it would be wrong for us to do it. Rishell certainly won’t benefit from this attack, and she certainly didn’t expect people to do this, and frankly I don’t think this has much to do with HER race.
I think it’s more likely the response of the anti-marriage-amendment crowd. They HAVE been increasingly shrill, they have used inflammatory language and attacks, they have resorted to shouting down and suppressing the speech rights of others.
There are reports from all over the state of attacks on the pro-amendment signs. I would imagine that this was the work of people who want the marriage amendment to fail.
Ok Batson, we’ve reached agreement and I thank you for taking the time to listen and respond. These individuals might have felt they were helping those opposed to Question 1. They didn’t. They hurt those trying to make a case against the Amendment. They also hurt people within the Manassas GOP and their supporters, who have a right to post their signs and have their meetings in a place that is safe from vandals. I am truly sorry that this act of vandalism took place. Our country is a great place becasue disagreements are worked out in a civilized way through a democratic process. We can look around the world to see where the path of those who rejected a civilized and democratic approach to resolving conflict. The vandals might want to go down that road, the rest of us don’t. I hope you catch them and that they are punished.

I don’t think there ever was a disagreement, but Amen I say none the less. We always agreed that the act was wrong. If this had been a case where Rishell or Feder or Webb or commonwealth coalition signs had been defaced, I would have agreed that this was a criminal act, and the perps beneath contempt. The only point that required clarification is that if the shoe were on the other foot, so-to-speak, if it had been a case where this was done to Democrat candidates, I would have felt shamed by these scumbag’s actions, even though I would never engage in such behavior. I won’t belabor this point, as I think you know what I was driving at, and we agree. Beautiful is our political system, when rational people are at the wheel.
I happened to be at the BRRWC meeting Thursday night. I heard a noise toward the front of the building, but thought it was the bathroom door being opened. Alas no one was in the bathroom. I wonder now what would have happened if I had gone outside to investigate the noise I had heard. I probably would have caught the vandals in the act. We can only speculate on what they would have done if they were caught.
It is not a pleasant feeling knowing now what was taking place while our meeting was going on. There are far too many “nuts” out there for me to feel comfartable with the vandalism taking place when they knew there were people inside.
The one good thing that did come of this, is the outstanding support of the Gop and Jackson Miller because of this. People from all over Virginia are outraged by this and have been very generous in their support.
Signs have been stolen all over the Old Town area lately, and I would have to say, I think the Dem’s are worried. I am not saying any campaign is doing it, just that someone is worried. If they weren’t, they would leave the signs alone.
