"We have lost our ambition, our imagination, and our willingness to do the things that built the Golden Gate Bridge" - Barack Obama (aka President Malaise)

PWC 07 Outlook — Updated

In Prince WIlliam County there are several seats that are either vacant or expected to be competitive in 2007. Here’s a look at how this increasingly complex kabuki dance may shake out:
Seats In Play:
- Board of County Supervisors - Occoquan (vacant)
- PWC Clerk of the Court (expected vacancy)
- House of Delegates, 51st District (competitive, possible vacancy)
- Virginia Senate 29th District (potential vacancy)
Republicans:
- Lucy Beauchamp, currently on the PWC School Board is a compelling candidate for higher office and is expected to run for Clerk of the Court.
- Bob Fitzsimmonds is already running for the 29th Senate.
- Hal Parrish has too large a campaign war chest to not run for something, and may take a shot at the 29th Senate.
- Michele McQuigg, Delegate representing 51st HOD may run for Clerk of the Court and step down from her position in Richmond.
- Mike May is a possible Republican nominee for the Occoquan BOCS spot.
- John Gray is also a possible Republican nominee for the Occoquan BOCS spot.
- Faisal Gil is an ambitious dark horse to run for the 51st District.
- Grant Lattin, PWC School Board representaive from Occoquan could be competitive if he’s inclined to run.
- Julie Lucas, PWC School Board member may run for the 51st District.
Democrats:
- Sharon Pandak, recent BOCS Chairman candidate may possibly go for the Occoquan BOCS seat, or perhaps 51st HOD provided she lives within the right boundaries.
- Earnie Porta, mayor of Occoquan is expected to fill out more of his first term as mayor but just might run for something else.
- Charles Colgan, 29th Senate District, has indicated he wants to retire, if an acceptable candidate will replace him.
This is a pretty long list of possible positions and potential candidates. This year a lot of folks felt frozen in place pending Maureen Caddigan’s decision whether to run for chairman of the BOCS. Next year that kind of game is going to become inordinately more complex, as there are more alternatives and plenty of scenarios which could be played out. Hopefully there’s some coordination happening which will help figure out what the Republican slate will look like, otherwise it’s going to be a mess of last-minute jockeying which will probably freeze some good candidates out of the races they would most likely do well in and improve the chances of a pickup by Democrats somewhere.
My guess at this point is that Senator Colgan stays where he is, but Michele McQuigg decides to pack it in without running for another office. Sharon Pandak may run for the Occoquan supervisors seat and would probably win over Mike May or John Gray. If Colgan stays in the Senate he’s a clear favorite. And Earnie Porta would be favored for the 51st HOD seat if that opens up.
It’s going to be a wild ride. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: Minor changes to the lineup, and removing Dave Mabie as a potential candidate as I understand he may be moving out of the county.
UPDATE 2: Riley provides additional info in the comments, Julie Lucas added to the mix.
