Advance Reports

Shaun Kenney is first out of the gate with reports from the Republican Advance this weekend, confirming the my expectations of a generally uneventful meeting with predictable results. Ed Gillespie gets elected RPV Chairman, Jim Rich gets a meaningless reprimand, Bill Bolling continues to take the lead, and Bob McDonnell is everyone’s favorite nice guy. Although I’m certain it’s worthwhile just to have the chance to hang out with so many great Republicans, I imagine anyone showing up in hopes of participating in a course change for RPV is only setting himself up for bitter disappointment.
There’s still hope that Ed Gillespie can affect change at RPV and help it evolve into the kind of organization which will make a difference. Perhaps the opportunity to improve RPV will come quietly and from behind the scenes rather than at a big event like this. I hope so. Otherwise, RPV’s relevance in Virginia’s political scene will continue to wane.
UPDATE: Commentary over at TC indicates no reprimand was issued to Jim Rich.

I am afraid, you have hit the nail on the head sir!
I disagree with your assessment on Bolling and McDonnell. Bolling’s political capital has gone down in the last year–he was utterly irrelevant during the General Assembly session and didn’t stand up to the high-taxers in the Senate and has not been very helpful to get Republicans elected– the general consensus among folks I talk to is that he’s only in it for himself.
McDonnell’s been leading the charge on the marriage amdt., has traversed the state helping other Republicans and stood by Allen throughout. His capital has gone up.
I agree that McDonnell is still everyone’s favorite nice guy, but he’s also taking the lead–not Bolling.
