Mabie To Resign
By Greg L | 9 January 2007 | Prince William County | 3 Comments
Dave Mabie, Clerk of the Court for Prince William County has announced he will resign in April according to the Manassas Journal-Messenger.
This is another surprise from Dave Mabie who mid-term decided to move out of the county and has made it clear he will not run for re-election. I’ve also heard rumors that he hasn’t been showing up for work in months, but I haven’t been able to confirm that, with several sources noting that he has attended recent political events at the courthouse. By resigning in April the likelihood that a special election will be called is very low.
I am concerned about these rumors and by the announcement that he will resign more than four months from now. If there’s a reason for him to depart, that departure should be done immediately and a special election called in order to fill this office. Lucy Beauchamp, chairman of the Prince William County School Board, and Michele McQuigg, member of the House of Delegates for the 51st District have announced they will run for clerk and are actively campaigning. Moving this election up will not impose a hardship and is clearly warranted given that the current officeholder isn’t interested in the job.
I hope the full story on this comes out soon.

I think this is the full story, Greg. And the problem with holding a special election is that you will still need to hold a general election in November. Actually, what will probably happen, if memory serves, is that the Circuit Court judges will appoint someone to fill the remainder of the term. That’s how Bill Ryland had the job for a few months, before he was beaten by Dave in 1991.
If we can put aside political concerns for a moment, I will be sad to see Dave Mabie go. His campaign against Sen. Colgan was one of the first I worked after moving to Manassas. I was able to spend a good amount of time with Dave driving around PWC putting up signs and dropping literature. I recall one afternoon when Dave gave me a two hour course on the design of campaign signs, while putting up his. It was not only extremely educational, but one of the most enjoyable afternoons I’ve spent in politics. I learned a tremendous amount about PWC and politics from Dave during that campaign, for which I am still grateful.
Dave Mabie, along with Tony Kostelecky and Steve Thomas, got me hooked on Manassas politics. He is a gentleman and a credit to this area. Life, and politics, go on, but I would like to pause a moment to recognize Dave Mabie’s years of service to the citizens of Manassas and PWC before we begin bickering about what happens next.
Thanks Dave.
I agree, Mr. Harrison…I’ve known Dave for many years, and in fact went to high school out in Nokesville (BDHS) with Dave’s wife Copper. He is really an outstanding human being who only made a few missteps in judgement, particularly in assuming the best in some people not worthy of that trust. I was also VERY disappointed when I heard that he had moved out of the county. It was obviously a move out of PWC politics. He will, and has, indeed been missed.
