Jackson Miller Strong Out Of The Gate

By Greg L | 11 January 2007 | 50th HOD District | 19 Comments

Our newest member of the House of Delegates, Jackson Miller, has introduced a number of bills that make it clear that he fully intends to fulfill his campaign promises in regards to illegal immigration, overcrowding, and making Virginia a great place to build and grow a business. Here’s a list, with links of all of the bills that Delegate Miller has introduced:

After years of neglect in the General Assembly, it’s pretty clear that means of controlling illegal immigration is going to be a hot topic this session. Delegate Jeff Frederick has introduced bills to adopt the Section 287(g) state-wide, and to establish penalties on contractors with public contracts who employ illegal aliens. Delegates Marshall, Rust, Reid, Albo, Gilbert, Cline, Griffith, and Cole are also among the many who have introduced legislation on the issue, and there’s a number of proposals in the Senate as well, with Senators Ken Cuccinelli and Jay O’Brien taking a lead.

We used to hear a lot of talk about how illegal immigration is a federal problem and there’s nothing that the state could do. With the election of Jackson Miller it seems as if the General Assembly at least has figured out that indeed, there are a lot of things that can be done, and at least is going to start a debate. I’m pretty sure with this momentum on the issue the chances of actually getting something done aren’t all that bad.

Not even a year ago many political observers were aghast that Jackson Miller would be talking about ICE training for local law enforcement in Manassas. Now the General Assembly is in a footrace with Attorney General Bob McDonnell to see who can implement it faster in the State. Jackson Miller is following that up with overcrowding, restrictions on benefits for illegal aliens, business climate improvement and public safety initiatives. For a freshman legislator, he sure does seem to have made an impact, if only from the nature of his election and the campaign which he ran.

There may well be some things to be happy about when this session is over.

Interesting. However, if you want to see something truely interesting, go look at some of the other bills being introduced. They are all over the map! One interesting one that seems to allow up to 20% of your home’s value to be exempt from property taxes, phasing out the car tax, the governor can serve for more than one term, the governor can’t serve more than one term and on and on.

I do wonder how many of the legislators have much local gov’t experience? Bills that slash property taxes by 20% would play havoc with municipal budgets everywhere as employees, police, fire, teachers, etc. would have to laid off in droves.

Jackson will give it the good old college try like he did on
the Manassas Council, and I hope he proves me
wrong, but as the newest delegate he will be lucky to
    pass gas this first year.

Big Dog is right. While most are good bills, Jackson will have to pay his dues first. I just hope that in future sesssions, Jackson continues to push the bills until they get passed by the GA.

Mr. M - what sort of “social engineering schemes”? I didn’t get the reference. Sorry.

    Robert M:

I don’t know how much “social engineering” is going on in PWC but I would doubt much. In any event, you’re talking about getting rid of probably 15% of public employees. This will primarily effect public safety and education as they are the largest employers in municipal government. If that’s your idea of a social engineering program then I suppose you’re right.

Is it me, or does the 39 year old Del. Miller have a real bright future in this Commonwealth. Color me impressed, especially when you consider some of the other delegates in NOVA.

I think Robert is talking about the schools.

I would agree that Mr. Miller is off to a pretty good start. Let’s hope he continues to inject a degree of sanity into state government.

The social engineering of schools unfortunately is a by product of the current president and his No Shild Left Behind. The Federal government doesn’t belong in education, housing, and we could probabally name a few other things. Big Government starts (and must stop) in Washington.

just read the bill summaries; way to go Jackson! You’re attacking the illegal immegration lion from multiple sides. I personally am tired of paying taxes to support them, while the illegals work on a cash basis and pay no takes

PS, how about a tax (can’t believe I said it) on all wire transfers out of the country???

    Anon,

The social engineering of the schools started way before Bush became President. Besides, he teamed up with Ted Kennedy on the program.

How very true. As I like to say both sides lost that war. Government has been on our back ever since. Happy Lee-Jackson day to everyone.

[…] And, they’re off! General Assembly gets in gear. At a local blog called Black Velvet Bruce Li (BVBL) a post is up about the opening salvo of bills introduced by Delegate Jackson Miller of the 50th District. There’s a lot to be said for them. So, that’s what I’m gonna do. […]

“Besides, he teamed up with Ted Kennedy on the program.”

Yea, and he’s teaming up with Ted Kennedy on an amnesty for illegal aliens, too.
