Let’s Go To The Video Tape (#4)

By Greg L | 18 January 2007 | Rack & Roll Scandal | No Comments

90 Police Officer SWAT Raid: $274,500.
Two paid police informants arrested and released without charge: $500.
Two bottles of beer samples liberated in the raid: $0.
Not having to admit the raid was unlawful: Priceless.

See the raid video here, and here is a great post on it.

Here’s the story in a nutshell: After trying to conduct undercover drug deals with paid informants and undercover officers, and pushing hard to try to get minors served beer but to no avail, a regional task force raided Rack & Roll under the premise of an ABC inspection with 90 police officers, complete with shotguns. The result of the raid? After an hour of tearing the place apart, two warm and unopened samples of beer next to the refrigerator and a couple of little bottles of vodka were found — the kind of bottles you get on an airplane — stuffed into Dave Ruttenberg’s desk drawer in a private office that wasn’t even part of the licensed establishment. No search warrant was ever issued for the raid.

Later, the fact that the raid was conducted was used as a rationale for revoking Dave Ruttenberg’s ABC permit. What a way to destroy a business — create what looks like evidence of impropriety, and then use that to destroy them.
