Stirrup Versus Dominion

By Greg L | 12 February 2007 | Prince William County | 1 Comment

Gainesville Supervisor John Stirrup has apparently had enough of Dominion Power refusing to answer written questions he has submitted, and has published an open letter in the Gainesville Times calling them out. First Dominion says that they’ll be happy to answer any questions, and then they come back after the questions have been submitted and say they can’t provide answers until April, 2007. It sure looks like they’re not really interested in what the citizens think, as if anyone was doubting that in the first place. Here’s the letter:

Prior to Dominion Energy’s (Dominion) presentation to the Prince William County Board of Supervisors on Dec. 5, 2006, employees of your company agreed to answer, in writing, any and all questions that I might submit regarding your company’s application to construct a 500-kilovolt line from Meadow Brook substation to the Loudoun substation.

On Dec. 12, 2006, I submitted 24 questions to your representatives. After repeated telephone calls over the next several weeks, they told me on Jan. 5, in no uncertain terms, that none of my questions would be answered in writing until after Dominion files its application with the State Corporation Commission in April 2007.

As an elected official representing nearly 70,000 constituents, many of whom will be directly affected by one of your proposed routes, I respectfully insist that these questions deserve answers. Accurate, verifiable, forthright and transparent information provided directly by your company will help to educate everyone interested in this process.

Transparency is the cornerstone of the democratic process and Dominion’s application should be held to those same underpinnings of transparency and accountability. You have the opportunity to answer these questions now, which will be a great service to the many concerned citizens in my district as well as all affected citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

On behalf of the constituents I represent, I appreciate your attention to this issue and I look forward to your timely response.

John T. Stirrup

Gainesville District Supervisor

Go get ‘em, John.

UPDATE: Apparently Supervisor Stirrup’s letter proved embarrasing enough for Dominion to actually release it’s responses, which you can read here.  I’m not too impressed and find many of the responses generic, lacking in detail, and inconsistent with other information that I have seen.  But kudos to John Stirrup for getting some responses.  Can you imagine Dominion being initially unwilling to answer questions like these prior to their filing with the SCC?

Excellent post. I’m in Loudon and while I’m a little relieved the old route has been shelved, it doesn’t change the fact that there doesn’t need to BE a route.

Lots of similar sentiment in this Post story today: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/13/AR2007021301185.html

And one plug, if you don’t mind — No Power Towers is now up on MySpace, and friending anyone who is interested in the issue: http://www.myspace.com/nopower

    Keep up the good work.
