Kaine’s Bluff Is Pathetic

By Greg L | 22 February 2007 | Virginia Politics | 2 Comments

The Washington Post ran an article today on Governor Kaine’s threat to veto the transportation compromise that got picked up by a few blogs (see notable commentary on Mason Conservative, for example) and is now the talk of Richmond. Some conservatives disappointed with the spending plan and the Razing Kaine crowd are all cheering, and many Republicans are aghast. My take is that Governor Timmy just doesn’t have the balls to follow through on this pathetic threat.

Our current Governor isn’t a leader. He’s been closeted in his mansion, absent from the debate, and has contributed utterly nothing in the hopes that somehow the Republican majority would engage in an inter-party brawl which would leave any chance at compromise in tatters. Instead Speaker Howell and other leaders in the General Assembly have deftly out-maneuvered the opposition and pulled out all the stops to sheperd this plan through both the house and senate. With plan “A” apparently a foregone conclusion, plan “B” is to bluff.

Go ahead Governor, tell us you intend to veto this transportation solution. You promised not to raise taxes, and broke that promise within weeks, generating more in tax revenues than the state actually needs and then worked hard last session to apply those excess taxpayer dollars to everything other than transportation. Now you’ve promised us a transportation solution, and are poised to cast that aside as well? It’s a transparent and pathetic bluff designed to apply last minute pressure on the conference committee. You’re too much of a wimp to follow through on that promise, scared of the shadow of delegates who display actual leadership such as Jeff Frederick, and utterly incapable of doing anything other than making empty threats while your opponents actually display leadership, craft solutions, and build consensus. Outside of the sockpuppets over at RK, I doubt anyone takes this drivel seriously.

I’d be utterly shocked if Kaine vetoes this plan. It would suggest that someone retrieved the mason jar containing his manhood from beneath the kitchen sink where it’s kept for safekeeping by his wife. That would be worth headlines, if only to explain whether it would be a loan or a true transfer of ownership.

I see you caught on film the culprit that ate our $639 Million Dollar Surplus! That’s a pretty vicious looking creature…

We’re just waiting for Timmy! to trot out the Democrat playbook line about senior citizens being forced to eat cat food on account of the GOP’s plan.
