Colgan’s Victory Lap?

By Greg L | 8 March 2007 | 29th VA Senate | No Comments

I see that Community Connection Magazine’s article on Senator Charles Colgan has been published, and I get a little better treatment from them as a source for political analysis than I usually get from the Manassas Journal-Messenger or the Washington Post when they interview me on a story. This article certainly seems to be the sort which would be published as the prelude to retirement, and has an unmistakable “victory lap” feel about it.

Parrish had just endured a difficult re-election campaign in 2005. Greg Letiecq, publisher of the Prince William political Web site “Black Velvet Bruce Li,” said he sees parallels between Parrish’s 2005 race and the upcoming race for the 29th district Senate seat. Letiecq said both Parrish and Colgan set politically moderate agendas, which in more recent years have been less favored by their respective parties. Without a clear successor to their political legacy, Letiecq said it has been difficult for the older politicians to retire.

“The governor and a lot of folks are pressuring him to run,”said Letiecq, 43, a professed partisan Republican and blogger (www.bvbl.net) who said that without Colgan, the Democrats don’t have a viable candidate. “If Colgan steps down they’ve got nobody,” said the political blogger. “If he steps down that seat goes Republican, no question about it.”

Pretty soon there’s going to have to be an announcement from Senator Colgan. Reader’s think he’s going to succumb to the pressure and run for re-election. I don’t think so. While this article doesn’t tell us what he’s going to do, it certainly gives plenty of reasons for Colgan to step down and do something other than be embroiled in politics.
