Stewart: Consider A Tax Hike

By Greg L | 8 March 2007 | Prince William County | 7 Comments

Today’s Manassas Journal-Messenger had quite a shocker buried at the end of a story on Governor “Gridlock” Kaine’s little tour of municipalities where he’s been looking for political cover in trashing the compromise transportation plan. I’d expect that some socialist from Arlington might want to raise taxes rather than use the surplus in the General Fund, but to have PWC Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart advocate such a thing seems bizarre beyond comprehension.

Chairman Corey A. Stewart, R-at large, said the Prince William board of county supervisors would encourage local delegates and senators to accept the governor’s amendments, which are due March 26.

He also said that the possibility of raising the gas tax was considered during the meeting with Kaine.

“If we’re willing to use the General Fund then the legislature should at least consider a statewide gas tax,” Stewart said.

Excuse me? A gas tax hike? What the heck are you thinking, Corey?

If Corey Stewart has been accurately quoted here, he has severely undercut his political strength in the county, and may have opened the door to a challenger.  There has to be an explanation for this, otherwise it’s time to start the hunt for Corey Stewart’s evil twin.

    Greg,

Aren’t you the guy who supports the transportation compromise? That bill would have local Republicans raise taxes to pay for the roads that the state failed to build in the first place. Meanwhile, the sissy Republicans in the General Assembly keep their hands clean and take credit for the funds raised. So-called conservative friends of yours–Cuccinelli, O’Brien, Linghamfelter, Miller–voted for this. They screwed loyal local Republicans, including Stewart.

So now Stewart turns the tables and tells them to raise taxes for transportation. Stewart has essentially told them to screw themselves and raise the taxes themselves if they want taxes raised.

This is contradictory to a letter I received, dated February 19, 2007, on official letterhead, CHAIRMAN COREY STEWART, Prince William Board of Supervisors. He included with the letter a copy of a Washington Post article dated January 20, 2007, drawing attention to the second paragraph. He says in his letter “I won’t approve the “Republican” plan to raise your taxes. The truth is that fixing transportation is my biggest priority. But my plan is for developers to pay for it - Not you”. Could this something that has been manufactured by the rumor mill? After all, Corey was the one who stood up to the developers.

Bert & silverfox have done a beautiful job of illustrating the Corey Stewart so many of us have seen since he was first elected Occoquan supervisor - the one who talks out of both sides of his mouth.

What happened to the “republican” philosophy that wants more control at the local level and less control at the state and federal level? And why on earth is Corey Stewart pushing at statewide gas tax? I thought he was Mr. anti-tax.

Corey said he would consider a gas tax when the budget surplus was used for transportation!

What I don’t understand is how the GA would think it was okay to raise the gas tax when the voters voted it down a couple of years ago.

If the surplus is used for transportation first, I would then consider a tax increase, but not before that happens.

Beware of Corey and his cabal made up of “Team Kopko” folks. They will do anything for political points.
