Nohe Gains Momentum

This evening I got the scoop on the endorsements that Marty Nohe will announce, and the list has a couple of interesting names on it. If Tom Kopko announces his candidacy, which was expected Thursday but seems to have been inexplicably delayed, this list may indicate he has somewhat of an uphill climb to look forward to in trying to win the Republican nomination for the Coles District.
Scott Lingamfelter and Jackson Miller are longtime friends of Marty’s, and their endorsements aren’t that surprising. Tom Davis isn’t really that much of a surprise, either. Glen Hill’s name on this list may or may not be unusual, as I’m not familiar with Hill’s relationship with either Kopko or Nohe. Jay O’Brien is a surprise however, as Jay is rather close to Corey Stewart, who I am sure has been lobbying for Jay’s endorsement of Tom Kopko, and I would consider this endorsement to be a significant coup. There are other names on this list as well, which makes it a pretty broad show of support from county elected officials which definitely lends credibility to the conclusion that Marty Nohe has the upper hand. Meanwhile Tom Kopko is running out of time.
The delay in Tom’s announcement might indicate that after further consideration he might choose to stay as chairman of the county’s committee. That may really be the best outcome to hope for, as Tom’s skills are definitely highly valued and sorely needed in the committee, and his departure in order to undertake a primary challenge of Marty Nohe would leave some pretty large shoes in need of filling with perhaps not a whole lot of people with the qualities and dedication that Tom brings to fill them. If the PWCRC leadership remains stable this election cycle and resources are not diverted in order to support competing primary candidates in the Coles District, it will make it quite a bit harder for Democrats to win in the county this season.
If Tom doesn’t announce a challenge to Nohe this week, it might not be coming as time is really running out for undertaking any serious primary challenges this year. In many cases a candidate’s decision to run is based on the support they expect to receive from other elected officials. If Tom sees that support isn’t there, partly because many are supporting Nohe, and partly because many might like better continuity in the PWCRC leadership this election season, the conclusion may be that Tom Kopko is simply too valuable in his present capacity as PWCRC Chairman. There’s an informal rule in the Army of “never display a capability within the vicinity of a defined need”, lest you be too invaluable in a present position to be elevated to another one. In this case, maybe Tom’s the victim of his own success.

Tom Kopko needs to start fighting for Chairman again (if he wants it)….because he just demonstarted to the world that either he’s bored with it or doesn’t understand what his job is….sad
I heard that Tom was meeting with his advisors on Thursday night to discuss this and that if he announces it would be this coming Friday.
That should be this past Thursday he had the meeting, which would explain what you wrote about Thursday in the original post. I don’t think there is any delay in announcement.
Every one who knows Marty Nohe knows that he will be outworked by no one on the campaign trail. These endorsements only solidify his standing as the strong favorite in this race. Why would Tom Kopko want to risk a promising political future by relinquishing his chairmanship and having his head handed to him in a primary race? If he has any sense, he will exercise a little patience and wait for a better opportunity to present itself.
Will this announcement be delayed like Gill’s coming out party with Bill Bolling?
Hey BVBL I notice 175 views to this thread. 2 things, 1. tons of people are interested in this race and are realizing that Nohe will kill Kopko, or 2. Kopko is checking this thread every couple of minutes to watch his political ambitions burn up like a bonfire.
Kopko will announce one way or the other this Friday the 16th. He may decide to continue decimating the PWCRC until it gets to a level of his management capability and not get wiped out by Marty.
Mr. Kopko is obviousley surrounded by a group of “yes men” if he thinks he can beat Nohe in a primary. He possibly could have won in a convention, if and only if all of the stars were alligned just right.
I dont live in Coles but some people I have spoken with have said that Nohe is probably the best constituant services member of the BOS.
Primary? Kopko loses easy. Kopko, get some advice from ouside of your inner-circle. Then youll see the light.
The missing link to the Nohe / Kopko race is Chichester. His resignation has been imminent for some time now. Scott Lingamfelter wants that seat and Marty wants Scott’s Delegate seat. Marty hasn’t announced, Kopko is waiting it out to see what he does. If Marty’s job of choice is now available then Kopko seizes the opportunity.
LIngamfelter is not going for the 28th senate seat, which is already a crowded field, and Scott has personal reasons for staying where he is that I find entirely credible, if not laudable.
If the decision is about whether Scott is moving to the Senate, no one is going anywhere.
If Marty sits this cycle out because of his wife’s pregnancy then Tom should wait his turn to run for Coles and fulfill his duties as Chairman.
Hey Stern, what if you have it backwords, maybe it’s Kopko who isn’t listening to his Inner Circle! Ya think?
