I Want My Free Lunch!

By Greg L | 12 March 2007 | Virginia Politics | 1 Comment

Local elected officials who have been meeting with Governor “Gridlock” Kaine have given the Governor’s selective perception quite a workout, and the results are starting to become pretty amusing.  Courtesy of the DC Examiner we learn that on one hand these local elected officials are concerned that if they participate in the Regional Authority provisions it will harm their local economies, which isn’t entirely a bad consideration.  A little later in the article it seems that they don’t really mind this all that much, but just want the state to impose the taxes and fees instead of the localities so they don’t get held accountable.

Tell me this isn’t coming from Gerry Connoly.

Now I can certainly understand a locality thinking that raising these taxes and fees is not productive.  I can understand a locality having issues with an unelected regional authority controlling these funds.  There are probably at least ten reasons why a locality might defer participating in the regional plans and hope that in 2008 we can come up with a better solution given a better Senate.  But to ask the Governor to amend the transportation compromise to remove any local responsibility for imposing taxes, and have him not laugh in their face for this stunning display of cowardice and non-leadership is incredible.  What an “I want a free lunch” ploy.

As Governor Gridlock stumbles around Virginia desperately seeking something to do which might answer the leadership demonstrated by the Republicans in the General Assembly, he is encouraging other non-leaders in Virginia to flock to him and offer their own cowardly ideas on how to punt.  I miss George Allen, who at least knew how to throw the ball downfield and take the risks involved in trying to win.  Instead the Governor and the rest of the punting team is desperately trying to avoid losing, predictably without much success.

I think being a “porch sitter” was working better.  It wasn’t nearly this embarrassing.

I’m with you Greg! We’re paying twice already, don’t make me pay a third time! The taxes and fee’s in this plan really hits businesses in the pocket book and will hurt small business the most.

PW has 13,000 businesses of which less than 60% are companies with three or less employees. This transportation bill ain’t it.

Thank you Jeff Frederick, for trying your best to keep the hand of government out of our pocketbooks!
