The Rest Of The Story
By Greg L | 12 March 2007 | Illegal Aliens | 13 Comments
County residents were shocked in early December by the story of a young man who committed suicide by jumping off a bridge after being detained by police on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Not only the local media, but national outlets latched onto this story of a young hispanic Gar-Field student who loved to dance and play soccer who somehow managed to escape from the back of a police cruiser and take a fatal sixty foot plunge into the Occoquan River. Within days charges start to fly from this young man’s mother that the police may have murdered her son, and that his ethnic heritage was the reason.
The Washington Post tells it like this:
Rodriguez’s mother said that her son, a former Gar-Field High School student, had recently left school and had planned to begin home-schooling. She said that Rodriguez was placed on probation four or five months ago after he tried to flee from police after a car he was riding in ran a red light.
He was an avid soccer fan who loved to dance, she said.
And that’s when the media stops covering the story.
No mention is made that this young man was actually a criminal illegal alien on probation for car theft who had been expelled from school, who had been pulled over for driving 90 miles an hour on the Prince William County Parkway in the middle of the night, and had failed three field sobriety tests. Instead of “immigrating” from Honduras, he was smuggled across the Mexican border, caught by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, given a summons to appear for a deportation hearing, and then skipped that hearing before coming to Northern Virginia. Instead this is a pleasant “undocumented” immigrant who so richly deserves our sympathy.
Accuracy In Media looked into this story, and this about sums up what they’ve found:
For three straight days, five Post writers used the backdrop of a young man’s death to garner sympathy for the illegal immigrant movement, while ignoring, minimizing or forgiving the young man’s criminal history and the actions of those around him who facilitated his illegal activities.
Wes Vernon at Renew America picks up where the Post and MJM leave off with this:
The mother, Gloria Elena Rodriguez, is blaming the Virginia police. She is demanding an investigation. Oh, yes, it’s the trooper’s fault, you see. Never mind that this woman’s teen-age son was driving without a license, was driving while intoxicated, was driving recklessly, eluded an officer while under arrest, had entered the country illegally, and had failed to appear in court. I may have missed one or two, but those are the charges that come to mind.
Gloria Rodriguez herself entered the country illegally, hired a coyote to smuggle her son over the border, aided in his avoiding the immigration court, and allowed him to drink beer with his buddies in her home while she was there (contributing to the delinquency of a minor). She has broken a series of laws. Clearly, she should be arrested for her own crimes, and if convicted should spend time in jail and then be deported. That’s what should happen.
Chris Core — talkshow host on WMAL-AM in Washington — predicts what will happen is this: Gloria Rodriguez will sue the police and sue the state of Virginia. She will get money (she probably already has a lawyer, and likely was bombarded with ambulance chasers only too anxious to take up her case), and she and her second husband — also illegal — will probably be granted full citizenship. One might add that all of this will include court-ordered humble apologies from the authorities for daring to obey the law. Needless to say the arresting trooper — who only was doing his job — can forget about career advancement. He needs to look for other work.
I’m still waiting for the Washington Post and the Manassas Journal-Messenger to follow up on this story. Apparently I’ll have to wait just a little longer. Accuracy In Media concludes with the following questions, which I suspect will never be asked by the mainstream media:
How many people were put in harm’s way because of the actions of this one illegal immigrant? That’s the story the Post won’t tell.
How much money in taxpayer dollars was used to educate and prosecute this one illegal immigrant? That’s the story the Post won’t tell.
But there’s more: Bardales and the Rodriguez family are now calling for a full investigation into Rodger’s death. How many more taxpayer dollars will be spent on this? Are the authorities now going to be blamed for belatedly apprehending this criminal?
It is time for journalists to stop being “soft-hearted” to the point of blindness to illegal activity that costs the lives of the illegal aliens the media claim to be so concerned about.
The mainstream media really owes it’s readers better coverage than this.

When you’re an illegal alien, nothing is ever your fault.
“It’s no fun being an illegal alien…”
“It is time for journalists to stop being “soft-hearted”….”
Frankly, I believe a more accurate description might be “soft-headed.”
This just goes to show more hidden cost of illegal immigration. The costs go on and on. Why the media and illegal alien activists have to wonder why American citizens are so angry and fed up with this influx of illegal aliens is beyond me.
Most Americans don’t even know the real costs because we aren’t allowed to ask if someone is here illegally.
If you go to this site, Wes Vernon, click on Gathering of Eagles, or just click below http://www.gatheringofeagles.org/ I think everyone will find this interesting, even though it doesn’t pertain to illegal immigration. It does have to do with the war protests.
What amazes me is that the kid drowned. I mean, how’d he get here if he didn’t swim the Rio Grande?
Seriously, ICE needs to pay this woman a visit. If they won’t deport her, she needs to be charged with child neglect and contributing to the deliquency of a minor, processed under 287g, and then deported.
If my child died in police custody, I would also call for an investigation. Who wouldn’t?
She initially made a bunch of statements accusing the police of intentionally murdering her kid. About a month ago when I started digging on this there was a myspace page that the mother had set up, but I guess after the firestorm that erupted it got pulled. I should have screencapped it, and if I had, I would have talked in more detail about her statements which would put those references into better context.
But when you give your underage kid beer and let him ride around in the middle of the night drunk while he’s already got charges pending for auto theft, to blame the cops is pretty outrageous.
Have you gotten a copy of the police report from the incident? I never heard an explanation of how the kid got out of the car in the first place. Usually the police are very conscientous about keeping people from harming themselves, especially drunks. This is also the first I’d heard that the kid was drunk at the time. When you say he failed 3 sobriety tests - was that the night of the incident, or are those from previous encounters? It’s nice to hear more details about this. I have no doubt that the officer did nothing wrong, but the lack of details and answers always bothered me.
Greg:
This is an excellent blog entry.
So informative in fact, that you should forward your info to:
World Net Daily

They are always running stories on illegal aliens. For example:
http://wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=54659
The sad part of the episode is our tax dollars being wasted on an illegal idiot.
Gurdaloo: what I’ve read is that he failed three sobriety tests that evening after being detained. I think the policy is to conduct several in order to have the strongest evidence possible.
The officers put him in a squad car, handcuffed. Somehow he managed to get out of the car and managed to jump off the bridge. The officer’s didn’t see him escape or jump, and only noticed when they started looking for him and saw him in the water. It’s possible that the kid didn’t realize how high the bridge was in the dark and was just trying to escape custody.
“Illegal aliens are just here to work”.
Yea, they’re working the system.
