Jim Webb Staffer Arrested
By Greg L | 26 March 2007 | US Senate | 12 Comments
I guess our junior Senator from Virginia is pro-second amendment and favors the repeal of DC’s gun ban. Otherwise his staffers wouldn’t be carrying his loaded handgun into the Russell Senate Office Building, would they?
You’d think after serving in the military, he would have learned that you always maintain positive control over your weapons. Maybe it was just inconvenient this time, as he would have been the one arrested.
From Drudge:
SENATE STAFFER BUSTED FOR CARRYING WEBB’S LOADED GUN: Phillip Thompson, executive assistant to Senator James Webb (D-VA ), has been arrested by Capitol Hill Police on Monday for ‘inadvertently’ holding the senator’s loaded gun, according to a person close to the investigation. A Senate staffer reports that Thompson was arrested for carrying the gun in a bag through security at the Russell Senate Office building while the Senator was parking his car. Thompson was booked for carrying a pistol without a license (CPWL) and for possessing unregistered ammunition.
Statement by Jessica Smith, Webb Communications Director:
“To our knowledge, this incident was an oversight by the Senator’s aide. Phillip Thompson is a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the Senator. We are still awaiting facts.”
UPDATE: More at Virtucon, and Mason Conservative. Apparently Congressmen and Senators are permitted to violate DC’s ban on firearms possession, while they have allowed the citizens of the District to be stripped of this constitutionally protected right. They also seem to be allowed to possess firearms on federal property where mere citizens would be thrown in federal prison if they did so. It should be fascinating to see Webb’s defenders argue that no one should be prosecuted here, that it’s perfectly acceptable for members of congress who have at their disposal their own police force complete with automatic weapons to possess firearms, while citizens who lack these extensive protections are disarmed “for their own good.”

Notice that Webb’s office is already blaming the staffer who was holding Webb’s gun. Why did Webb give his gun to someone without a license or proper authorization to bring it into the building?
By transferring a firearm to another person without conducting a background check, will that foster discussions about closing the “Jim Webb Loophole” for transfers of firearms on federal property without fingerprints and a check of one’s criminal history?
More seriously, if Webb doesn’t take a hit for possession of the firearm, he should take one for illegally transferring a firearm within the District of Columbia. In order to affect a legal firearm transfer in the District, you MUST use a licensed dealer. Personal transfers are prohibited by DC code, and that code is not currently undergoing judicial challenge as is the possession restrictions.
I wonder if Webb will ever be prosecuted for THAT one.
Of course not. He’s a Democrat and this happened in D.C.
I propose a plea bargain: Webb gets anger management counseling and the charge gets dropped. Everybody wins.
I wonder if Mayor Bloomberg will run a sting operation into the Capital building, claiming that guns owned by Senators and Congressman are ending up on the NYC blackmarket.
Also, I wonder if Webb will enter Rehab, since this is what most of the elite do, when accused of committing a crime. Drive drunk, enter rehab. Have an affair, enter rehab. Send emails to congressional pages, enter rehab.
I wonder if the Webb staffer was able to read the model of the muffler of the bus, he’s just been thrown under.
Joe Biden must be very thankful that Webb is in the Senate. Now Biden is the 2nd dumbest person in the Senate.
Watch all the Faisal Gill apologists start posting “”"This is guilt by association! You are blaming Jim Webb just because he worked in the same place as someone who did something wrong. You must be prejudiced.!
…Why this reminds me of the time my cousin went to the same church as someone whose grand-nephew lived next door to an embezzler. So you are accusing my cousin of wrongdoing just as you accuse Faisal!!!”"”
After all, it is always wrong to blame a senior official (Gill was the chief lobbyist for Alamoudi’s American Muslim Council) for ongoing criminal and extremist activity in an organization, correct?
By the way, Gill has yet to announce on his campaign website his campaign kickoff. Here is a link to Gill’s flyer announcing it. http://goodbyejim.com/TopicImages/GillFlyer
Note the announced appearance of the Fatwa Four, the Gill endorsers Stewart, Lingamfelter, Bolling and Cuccinelli. You know when people as famous as the Fatwa Four make an appearance there are always all kinds of papparazi around.
I suspect that the Fatwa Four might wish visit the Gill kickoff incognito. They could sneak in the back way while covering their faces with newspapers.
Then when Gill announces the endorsers they could speak from backstage using a microphone. Gill could say “My Endorser #1 is so famous that I cannot reveal his name! Give it up for Endorser #1!”
Webb obviously doesn’t know anything about gun safety.
Did Webb give the pistola to the incarcerated fellow? Seems there is a question of dominion and control. If you own something and can direct someone what to do with it, you can be convicted of being in possession.
Greg - you should know that the laws of this land DO NOT apply to members of Congress - NOT being factious, am being serious here. IF Mr. Webb had carried the gun into the Capitol himself, no laws would have been broken. However, if anyone else did, “You have the right to remain silent.”
If it is true that the staff is now turning their backs on this “long time friend” of Webb’s, how do you think they will treat their constituents?
I know of someone who made a call to Webb’s office and asked a question concerning the UCMJ JUST to see how they would respond, and they were DEFINITELY not helpful - as a matter of fact, you could tell that the young lady (probably an 18 year old intern) had no idea what was being referred to and the caller was directed to contact the person who was in violation of it to get their opinion.
It’s Gore’s fault!
Watch for the Clintonian mantra…”can’t we all just move on?”
I don’t understand why anyone in Congress would need a gun after they had the new armor backed chairs installed. Oh, maybe the chairs would guard them from shooting each other in the back???
