A Possible Write-In Candidate

By Greg L | 19 April 2007 | Prince William County | 7 Comments

There’s a new political movement growing in Prince William County.  Frustrated with ineffective prosecutions, rumors of political corruption, and the apparent failure of anyone to run against the current officeholder, a write-in campaign is being discussed to find an alternative to having Paul Ebert continue to serve as Prince William County’s Commonwealth Attorney.  The write-in candidate appears to have at least the level of ability as the current office holder, and an easily recognizable name which will not only be easy to remember, but to spell.  Who is this challenger, you may ask?

Ham Sandwich For PWC Commonwealth Attorney

Now there are several challenges that face Ham Sandwich’s candidacy.  First, it’s impossible to solicit campaign contributions when you can’t sign your name, and therefore can’t file a statement of organization and this campaign finance reports as a candidate committee.  A Political Action Committee could solicit contributions and make independent expenditures on behalf of Ham Sandwich, which would pretty much be limited to producing and distributing yard signs.  I’m sure there would be plenty of folks out there who would be interested in putting a nice yard sign in front of their house for good ol’ Ham Sandwich.  We love him, we respect him, and gosh darn he can do the job just as well as the current Commonwealth Attorney in Prince William.

If Ham Sandwich should happen to pull off an upset and defeat Paul Ebert in the election, since he unfortunately is not a  licensed attorney, he wouldn’t be allowed to actually take office.  This would require a special election to be held, but I would imagine that after being handed a humiliating defeat by a delicatessen product Paul Ebert would choose not to participate in the special election and we’d have different names to choose from.  After all, could anyone credibly run for elected office when they’ve recently been defeated in an election by an inanimate object?

I’d like to hear what readers might think.  If nothing else, this would inject a lot of excitement into what otherwise would be a rather uninteresting race for a constitutional office, potentially broaden the level of participation by the electorate, and just be a whole lot of fun.  Just imagine what a great time it would be knocking doors and setting up signs for “Ham Sandwich for Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney”.

It’s about time that someone stands up (in a manner of speaking) to Paul Ebert’s lock on this office. Too bad that there haven’t been any Republicans willing to do it in decades!

That’s not necessary in the State of Virginia anon…you just have to “read the law.”

Why can’t we get a republican to run for this office?

The last time a Republican ran against Ebert his law firm mysteriously was subjected to a ten year effort to destroy it. I hope to fill out this story soon, but I’m still putting together the information.

Ham Sandwich can’t be intimidated. He’s the real deal.
