How To Make A Landslide
By Greg L | 17 May 2007 | Illegal Aliens, 50th HOD District | 4 Comments
Elected officials who are taking action in the fight against illegal aliens can take heart today in that Republican Lou Barletta, mayor of Hazleton, PA, not only won his party’s nomination by garnering 94% of the vote, but also won the nomination of the Democrats with 63% of the vote in a “write-in” campaign. Pundits are searching around for an instance of this happening before in a comparable municipality, and so far haven’t come up with anything.
Hazleton is one of the handful of localities that have been leading the way in enacting legislation at the local level to reduce the number of illegal aliens in a community. It’s been a tough fight for the city, as they’re squarely in the crosshairs of the ACLU and illegal alien advocacy groups. Once these legal challenges to the ordinances Hazleton has adopted are resolved, what was done in Hazleton may well become the model for other localities, making this a local battleground with a national significance.
The significance of this stunning political victory doesn’t have to be deferred until the courts have plodded through their process, however. Local elected officials who are working to defend the interests of their constituents, as Mayor Barletta has done, are quite likely going to be able to leverage this model for success. Locally this will impact the 50th District race the most, since Delegate Jackson Miller has been leading on this issue. While Jeanette Rishell’s supporters want to characterize Delegate Miller as an extremist trying to snatch away winter clothing from freezing immigrant children, it’s pretty clear that his legislative agenda has great potential for causing unprecedented landslide victories because it’s clearly what many voters are clamoring for.

In 1976, then-U.S. Rep. Sam Stratton (D-NY) also won the GOP nomination as a write-in. He nearly switched parties, too, but in the end chose to remain with the Dems. That proved to be a good thing for Reagan because Stratton chaired the House Defense Approps. Subcmte. in the ’80s and gave The Gipper everything he wanted to rebuild the military. (It also proved to be a good thing for Reagan since the ‘76 election was so close and Carter had convinced Stratton that if he switched parties, Carter might lose the district which could lead him to losing the state and would cost him the election. If it hadn’t been for Carter, would Reagan have been elected in ‘80 post-Ford?)
The just annouced “compromise” by the Senate I think overshadows any good news on illegal immigration.
Barletta: Next PA Governor, or successor to Arlen Spector?
Barletta rocks. I met him a few years ago when he ran for Congress against Paul Kanjorski. Not sure what he’ll do next, but he might be better position for something more than being a Congressman now as Ron suggests.
