Ham Sandwich Posts NPR Audio

By Greg L | 20 May 2007 | Prince William County | 6 Comments

The Ham Sandwich campaign has posted an excerpt of NPR’s “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” show from this weekend where Houston Chronicle deputy editor Kyrie O’Connor was stumped by host Peter Sagal’s question asking “who is running for commonwealth attorney in Virginia?” After Ms. O’Connor incorrectly guessed a Labrador Retriever, Peter was kind enough to describe Ham’s qualifications, tell listeners how they can visit Ham Sandwich’s website, and reiterate that Ham Sandwich was not at fault in the death of Mama Cass Elliot. You can listen to the excerpt here. (Excerpt no longer available, see update)

I understand that the Ham Sandwich campaign is very pleased with the way National Public Radio decided to promote Ham’s campaign, although it does seem that Peter Sagal didn’t quite grasp that Ham’s campaign is for Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney and not for Virginia Attorney General. Ham is a little bit more humble than to shoot for AG as his first elected office, and besides, I think Ham really appreciates the work that Bob McDonnell is doing. But the mention on a nationally syndicated radio program is apparently very much appreciated.

UPDATE: NPR has asked the excerpt from the program to be taken down, but you can go to their website and listen to the “Lightning Fill In The Blank” round where Ham is mentioned here.

UPDATE 2: The Ham Sandwich campaign issued the following press release in response to the media attention:

SANDWICH CAMPAIGN RECEIVES NATIONAL MEDIA ATTENTION;

LAUNCHES FIRST CAMPAIGN COMMERCIAL

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA – Republican write-in candidate for Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Hamilton “Ham” Sandwich, Esq., received national attention this past weekend on National Public Radio’s “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” Show.  During this week’s broadcast, host Peter Sagal stumped Houston Chronicle Deputy Editor Kyrie O’Connor with a question regarding Ham Sandwich’s race in Virginia, and then gave his audience a list of his comparative achievements and qualifications to hold this office.

“I am unaware of any other Commonwealth’s Attorney race anywhere in Virginia this year garnering such national attention and exposure as Ham’s has,” commented campaign manager Dillon Pikkel.  “The response has been tremendous, and we’re receiving email expressing support for Ham Sandwich’s candidacy from across the country.  Ham is clearly resonating with the national electorate, which bodes well for his campaign here in Prince William County.  In addition, the traffic to our campaign website has significantly jumped since this weekend and shows no signs of slowing down.  The voters are clearly hungry for Ham Sandwich’s positive message and compelling vision for the future of the Commonwealth’s Attorney office.”

“As this campaign continues to build momentum, it will be increasingly difficult for our opponent to continue to ignore our challenge to participate in a series of monthly debates,” Mr. Pikkel continued.  “If Paul Ebert does not wish to have the issues explored in-depth, in front of the voters, in a candidate’s forum, we fully intend to explore those issues with the voters independently, and in Mr. Ebert’s absence.”

On the heels of this national media attention, the Sandwich campaign has launched its first campaign commercial entitled, “Better Tomorrow.” The commercial may be viewed on the video-sharing website YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z96f1PD9pNQ.

Ham, a Virginia native, is a member of the Virginia Bar (Golden Phoenix division) and a partner in the law firm of Dill & Gallinger. He is married and lives with his wife, Virginia, and children Hamilton, Jr. (“Chip”) and Tina in Manassas. His campaign web site, located at http://www.votehamsandwich.com/, provides voters with his background information, rationale for running, a critique of his opponent’s record of failure in the job, information on the write-in process and a list of endorsements among other items.

    I wonder why you have to take down a taxpayer funded news item?

    I could understand if it was Fox or CBS - but we paid for that snippet!

    These folks were very nice to Ham, and it would be bad form to do anything to upset them after mentioning his campaign. Campaigns have to have good media relations, so I can understand why they would accommodate a request like this.

    Ham needs to use care with the media - those
    wanting to meet him for “a nice lunch” might have
    ulterior motives.
