Family Foundation Lauds County Delegation

By Greg L | 24 May 2007 | Virginia House, Virginia Senate | 2 Comments

The Manassas Journal-Messenger reports today that the Family Foundation gave four out of six representatives from Prince William County top scores based on their voting records on several key bills which would have strong implications on the strength and well-being of families in Virginia.  Delegates Jeff Frederick, Michele McQuigg, Robert Marshall and Jackson Miller all received perfect scores, and Delegate Scott Lingamfelter scored 95%.  It’s not much of a surprise that an organization devoted to the protection of life, marriage, parental authority, constitutional government and religious liberty would think highly of our county delegation, since they’ve been leading on these issues ever since they’ve been elected to office.

The Family Foundation used voting records on 27 bills, including the Marriage Amendment, eminent domain reform,  increased penalties for those who abort fetuses outside a hospital or clinic, protecting religious freedom, tax hikes, and off-track gambling.  It’s a pretty wide-ranging set of votes that had pretty strong impacts on the well being of Virginia families, and reflects a conservative platform of social, economic and liberty issues.  Rather than being a narrow, single-interest survey, this is a pretty comprehensive look at how our delegation performed in the 2007 legislative session.

Senator Jay O’Brien scored a pretty solid 85%.  Chuck Colgan scored an unimpressive 62%.  Toddy Puller, who appears to be unopposed in the next election, scored a dismal 15% and then whined that the Family Foundation didn’t support “affordable housing” initiatives or a raise in the minimum wage.  Colgan is being challenged by Bob Fitzsimmonds, who undoubtedly would receive a 100% rating had he been in the Senate.  There’s an opportunity to improve the county delegation’s collective score a bit here, but unfortunately the real problem child doesn’t appear to have a Republican challenger.

That’s GREAT….but I wonder how they would have scored if a criterion were “judgment in supporting candidates for election to public office.”
