I think with the election on the horizon, especially since the Federal immigration bill got killed, it would be political suicide to not listen to the residents and not vote for John Stirrup’s resolution. Even for those who may be running unopposed it is not too late for someone to have a write in campaign. I wish for once our elected officials would listen to the people they represent (Our U.S. Congress). Looks like our Congress did that yesterday and it is about time. I’m not going to give up on Mr. Covington, Mrs. Caddigan or Mr. Nohe. I think they will listen. I think they will do the right thing and vote for Mr. Stirrup’s resolution.

The residents do need to call and let them know. This is not a time for apathy.

Patty - I hope you are correct about Wally Covington. I would very much like to be wrong about him and get his vote in support of John Stirrup’s resolution. To approve the resolution we need five votes. I think Stewart and May are dependable. We would still need one more vote in addition to Wally’s. I hope he is reading this blog and sees an opportunity to demonstrate that his critics are wrong about him on this issue.

Be on the lookout for the voting strategy the pro-development crowd has used in the past, however. That is when the one from that group who is receiving the most criticism, or needs the most political cover, votes with the pro-citizen block. The rest (meaning at least four) vote with the developers and kill the pro-citizen measure with a tie vote (four to four) on the board.

I wouldn’t give up on Mr. Covington yet. Remember, I’m the one who almost gave up on Mr. Stirrup and he did come through. I read an interview with Mr. Covington in one of the local periodicals (not MJM) and he indicated that he was willing to do something about illegals. After all he did also say that illegal aliens are not welcome in this county. Call his office and express your opinion about John Stirrup’s resolution. It would be nice if someone in Mr. Covington’s district would call. HSM should pass out some fliers in that district.

The chances of success are minimal at best as he will likely avoid potentially controversial votes until after November and have any potentially embarrassing applications in his district delayed until at least November. The acid test will be what he does with land use applications and policy matters after the election. My guess is that in true “Wally The Fish” fashion, he will flip or flop.

MOM - you’re correct. Sorry I forgot about Mike May. As you say, he will probably support us also. That means we need two more votes to get five for John to win.

It is too late for an independent to get on the ballot. Two or three credible people considered running against Covington and Tom Kopko almost ran against Nohe. Despite Tom’s failure of judgement in taking money for consulting for Gill, he would have voted with us on this. No one ran, however.

I agree completely with your assessment of Covington. Do you think there would be enough groundswell after what we just went through to defeat him in a write-in campaign? The chances of suceeding at that would be minimal, at best.

Of course Covington isn’t going to support it, he has consistently proven to be all talk and little action. Moreover, when he does take action, such that it is, he doesn’t maintain his position. Much was made of his resolution (read grand stranding) regarding a moratorium on residential rezonings, a simple review of the last few board meetings will indicate that he has either forgotten about it or doesn’t intend to live up to it. The true test will be in the coming months as several similar rezonings are in his district. Might want to review VPAP and see how many of the parties involved have contributed to his campaign, you’ll be surprised at the percentage of contributions they account for. I suspect that his other resolution regarding “illegals” is just more smoke and mirrors proposed at a time when a legitimate challenge was still possible. Now that the filing deadline has passed, don’t look for much support from him unless you can find a way to lay some pressure on him or find a viable write-in candidate. The same is largely true for Nohe and Caddigan. I suspect both May and Stewart will support Stirrup without question.

When I called Covington’s office the person who took my call didn’t seem particularly thrilled (which may or not be a reflection her boss’ position) to hear me ask for Covington’s support of the Stirrup proposal.

The next big fight will be the “Fairness Doctrine” to kill talk radio. Liberals and illegals use the “mainstream media” and march around in the streets disrupting traffic to make their points. Conservatives and patriots use talk radio and the Internet to make their points. The Democrats and the corporatist Republicans want to eliminate our means of political communication to avoid another loss like the one they suffered today. Get ready.

Locally, let’s give the PWC BOCS a tsunami of calls and emails to support John Stirrup’s resolution to get control of the illegal alien problem here. Washington finally heard us. The BOCS is next. Jenkins, Covington, Nohe and Barg are pro-developer (thus pro-cheap illegal labor). They are the ones to focus on. I’m not sure about Caddigan. Stewart is almost certain to support the Stirrup Resolution.

The Republic survives! The people have spoken!

But we need to strike while the iron is still hot! People all across the country have been awakened by this near travesty. For the first time I can ever remember, I am fostering a hope that maybe there is still time to pull America back from the brink of destruction.

We have got a lot of work to do, but let’s capitalize on this victory and work toward getting more Americans involved in the fight. 2008 is just around the corner. We need GOOD people in Washington.

We still need to call all of our Representatives and tell them the bill being killed isn’t enough. Like COM said, The Federal Government needs to continue the recent crackdown on illegal immigration.
We have to keep the pressure on these elected officials or we will be going through the same agony next year!

Now it will be interesting to see if the Federal Government continues the recent crackdown on illegal immigration. Was it really a good faith effort, or an attempt to BS the Country into thinking the Feds really have changed.

It really is in the best interest of the Feds to enforce the current laws we have, that way if and when the issue comes back up, they will have a track record to show they really are interested in enforcement.
