A “Help Save” Day Laborer Facility?
By Greg L | 2 July 2007 | Fairfax County, Illegal Aliens | 3 Comments
An organization called “Project Hope and Harmony” has been running the Herndon Day Laborer center since it opened, and running afoul of a number of the members of the Herndon Town Council as well as the membership of HelpSaveHerndon. Recently the operators of the site were criticized for shielding illegal aliens who were wanted by the police, and has consistently been criticized for making no efforts to ensure that this taxpayer-supported facility complies with state and federal labor laws. As a result, the Town Council has been requesting competitive bids for operation of the facility in an attempt to see if someone else might promote neighborhood harmony a bit more than Reston Interfaith, which is the parent organization for “Project Hope and Harmony”.
HelpSaveHerndon member Dennis Baughan is one of those bidders, according to today’s Washington Times. Although it might seem a little strange to have an organization focused on opposing the presence of illegal aliens in the community running a taxpayer-supported day laborer center, it really makes a lot of sense. Should Mr. Baughan win this contract, it’s pretty likely that the center will vastly improve it’s compliance with the law and help those legal residents and American citizens on the lower rungs of the economic ladder tremendously by not forcing them to compete with illegal aliens who will work for wages far lower than legal workers need to survive. If the purpose of this center is to help day laborers, and not specifically illegal alien day laborers, putting a group dedicated to the rule of law in charge is about the only reasonable alternative there is.
It would be nice to see Project Hope and Harmony kicked out of Herndon. They’ve made a mess of the place and their willful and reckless harboring of illegal aliens is against federal law. Unfortunately since they’re associated with religious organizations, it seems federal law enforcement officials are reluctant to do anything but ignore this. If federal laws would just be enforced in this regard, it would be a lot easier to clean up this day laborer center. If the operators of the day laborer center were arrested, prosecuted and convicted as felons, awarding the contract to operate this facility to another group would have been easier, and completed long ago. As usual, the localities have to pick up the slack, but at least Herndon has the guts to do so.

are the day labor sites for anyone or you have to have proof of documentation? I don’t know how all that is operating…can some explain?
If the Federal government is serious about clamping down on employers of illegals, then they should be going after the administrators of these day labor centers. It is presumed that 85% of those seeking jobs from these places are illegal.
Maureen, Up to this point the only thing the federal government has done consistently, is turn their heads tha other way. And until those in that administration understand the benefit of having a fence on the border, nothing will change. Dealing with this on the local levels is the only hope that local jurisdictions have. And hiding behind the religious shroud is something the devil has done since the beginning of time. Holding people accountable, no matter who they are, is the standard of law. Here again, enforcement is what is needed.
