For those interested, I’ll be a guest on the Chris Core show about 9:25 this morning, talking about the efforts of Help Save Manassas to support Supervisor Stirrup’s resolution on illegal aliens.

UPDATE: My segment is going to start at 9:38 now.

UPDATE 2: The segment aired a little later, and there seemed to be some confusion between the producer and Chris Core about whether I was a caller to the program.  Oh well, it was a busy morning for them after all.

There was a lot of discussion this morning about the probable cause standard that was introduced in this resolution.  In the original version of the resolution the language stated that all persons would be asked about their immigration status in order to avoid criticism of racial profiling, along the same lines used by TSA to screen in airports which sadly results in 92 year old grandmothers are searched in order to find potential terrorists.  After some discussions, the consensus was that the probable cause standard, which is preferable for a number of reasons doesn’t necessarily open the county up to legal challenges to the degree we initially thought.  Even if there are legal challenges, and for some reason the illegal alien lobby manages to get the standard changed to one that requires everyone to be asked about their legal status, the political damage to their cause which would inevitably result would be tremendous.

Because of some faulty news coverage on this resolution, the debate has sometimes focused on how citizens are supposed to prove their legal status.  The actual language in the resolution (from the very beginning) is such that only persons who say that they are not citizens when asked would have their legal status checked, so unless a citizen lies about his or her legal status and says they’re an illegal alien, they wouldn’t have to prove a thing.  Of course the details of the resolution’s  implementation remain to be worked out between the Board of County Supervisors and the Police Department, nothing in the resolution is directing the police department to start demanding papers from anyone.  This is a canard of the illegal alien lobby, and I’m disappointed the mainstream media hasn’t apparently bothered to read what was passed and figure out how badly they’re misinforming the public.

It’s still a great day in Prince William County, however.  Illegal aliens have one more reason to return to their homelands, and perhaps some of them will soon do so.

Greg, problem is, PWC is JUST one county. Now I DO believe in the power of 1 and hope that PWC stands strong and the police do THEIR job vice worried about “perceptions” from those who flagerently violate our laws and those who support them doing so (to include those churches giving “sancturary”).

It is time to start putting some SERIOUS pressure on our delegates to get laws past state-wide then get the word out on “friendly” media. Once the momentum picks up, which it appears right now it is (strike while the iron is hot), the movement will go nation-wide and our national leaders won’t be able to do turn on the news or read the papers without seeing the will of the people being done.

I was on the lightning round. “I’ts a beautiful day in PWC. It’s about time PWC leads the: and may the State and Federal Governements follow suit. Thank you to the Board of Supervisors for a unanimous yes vote!!”

I’ve got my husband drafting letters now for our delegates. I will be calling and visiting their offices. We all must do this
We the legal citizens, have won in PWC. Now we must win in the Commonwealth.

So if an illegal alien states that they are a citizen, nothing gets checked? Am I reading that right?

People, wake up and do not get complacent! It was good we brought pressure, but WE DID NOT WIN ANYTHING YET! Don’t you understand what’s going on? Under the revised resolution we cannot sue to force enforcement and, according to Greg, unless someone admits that they are not a citizen our county staff will not ask them to prove they are here legally. THE ILLEGALS HAVE ALREADY BROKEN THE LAW BY COMING HERE, DO YOU REALLY THINK THEY ARE GOING TO ADMIT THEY ARE NOT CITIZENS?!!! Once this gets out the liberal/marxist/zapatistas are just going to tell them to lie about their citizenship to avoid having to produce documentation. THIS IS CRAZY! We are being played. The supervisors pushed this off until after November so they don’t have to do anything. What are we celebrating? WE NEED TO WAKE UP!

The 90 days until a work session thing is a disaster! 30 days is more than enough time to have a work session, then have a public hearing and then pass a change to the county code. Am I the only one that sees what’s going on here? Action is being pushed off until after the November election when we will not have any influence. Greg, HSM needs to organize to get the work session date moved up. If we cannot get that then we need to start organizing groups of HSM volunteers to regularly patrol neighborhoods to report trash, zoning violations, overcrowding, etc. That’s the only way to scare the illegal immigrants out of the county. I guarantee that if we let this sit until after the November elections there will only be token follow up by the Board.

It is nice to get the attention of elected officials but as A.P. said, now is not the time to let up. many a mealy mouthed politician have done this sort of thing only to back off once the spot light has been removed.

The key is to keep the pressure on and keep the issue in the forefront of every local/State/National elected official. I have no doubt some on the board are hoping this issue goes away so they will not have to deal with it any longer.

The reason for the 90 days is that (1) the entire board is off for the month of August (2) it was originally 60 days, Marty Nohe asked to make it 90 days because of the August thing, as he stated, and as he did not state (but pretty understandable) he and Kris just had a baby and it’s a very busy time for a new father. I do not have a problem with 90 days. Gives us plenty of time to continue organizing, researching, educating others and ourselves, and turning up the heat.

On another note, a couple of weeks ago I got United 93 from netflix. Hadn’t had a chance to see it in the theaters - I recommend renting this film if you’ve never seen it. It is very very powerful. Especially since it’s been six years since 9/11 and time does tend to heal wounds. We need to remember how we all felt when we were attacked.

    Let’s ROLL!

I don’t know what everyone is so worried about…the media is still touting it as the strongest action taken by a local government in the country. You only JUST finished thanking your Supervisors yesterday…and today they screwed up? I don’t think so.

This problem did not evolve overnight and it is going to take quite some time to resolve, if it can be resolved. Our BOS gave us a jump start and a reasonable timeline during an election season, when some of them are in the midst of campaigning. Consider yourself fortunate…I doubt other County Supervisors would have been so dedicated to their constituents (or had their constituents hold their feet to the fire so effectively) that they would put their needs ahead of their own. This is really no delaying tactic…it is a necessary period of time required to get things done right.

Well, I’ll be calling PWC, in the morning, to find out if they have gotten permits. I want this expansion creep on to this block. I’ll being passing this warning on to our favorite Property Code Enforcement Inspector. He’s been real busy around here. Just about a two weeks ago, he had 18 houses to check out here, in Westgate and Sudley. They make me mad enough with their 15 work vans, with their painting business on the side of them. We can NOT have another, 10131 Lomond Drive drive on my block. Somehow, I bet your source is right, they usually are with their scoops.

Waiting 90 days is ridiculous. Most of the information was already presented in the power point yesterday. Members of the BOCS could have read it during the break in August and been ready to vote in September.

I know Marty has a lot on his plate with a new baby and NVTA, but the rest of the BOCS could have done the bulk of the work. It’s a shame to have let this sit for 90 days. It’s more time for people to sit and stew over it. When some of what they’re getting worked up about it’s going to be an issue.l

Another reason to have acted sooner is to identify problematic aspects of enforcement due to restrictions or limitations resulting from the Dillon Rule. JS needs time to team up with the County Lobbyist DF, and our Delegates to hammer them in Richmond for supportive legislation. While we’re at it, perhaps it’s time to reform the Dillon Rule. I’d be curious to know what BM, JM, JF think about that.

We need to get this done down state ASAP, so we can advance this with our Congressman for the 2008 election cycle.

The presentation by Gerhardt is based on a cursory survey of what department officials told him, and doesn’t fully reflect what agencies are actually doing. It may take some time to determine exactly what’s happening, and with the August break it’s really not an unrealistic time period to set all of this up.

It’s probably going to take some time to vet the legal report by Ross Horton, the county attorney, with other legal organizations so we can ensure that the supervisors get a good picture of what the legal landscape looks like in the implementation details. It’s not always possible to get our folks from the Immigration Reform Law Institute and Judicial Watch to rapidly turn around a legal brief, and having the time to get this right is pretty responsible.

It’s longer than what we would hope for, but it’s a fairly realistic maximum limit. Could it be done in a shorter time frame? Yes, probably. It’s still going to get done however, and it will get done pretty soon. We may have to wait a month or two more than we might like, but as Mike Heathmon of the Immigration Reform Law Institute advises, “legislate in haste, litigate at leisure”. Taking time to get this right is pretty responsible, and will yield some really important benefits.
