73% Support Illegal Alien Crackdowns

By Greg L | 19 July 2007 | Illegal Aliens, Virginia Politics | 42 Comments

A George Mason survey released today helps explain the popularity of Prince William County’s recent crackdown on illegal aliens: 73% of Virginians believe that police should check immigration status during routine activities such as traffic violation stops.  Despite using the softer language favored by illegal alien apologists (such as the term “undocumented immigrant”) the results show strong convictions that illegal aliens take jobs away from American workers and lower wages at the lower end of the economic spectrum.  The survey shows particularly strong opposition to illegal aliens from the African-American community, something that hasn’t been discussed a lot.

This survey talks quite a bit about opinions regarding the economic impact of illegal aliens, showing that entry-level workers, tradesmen and laborers are bearing more of the negative consequences of this problem than those in the upper income brackets.  It wasn’t too long ago that a skilled carpenter or bricklayer could be the sole wage earner for a family, but that lifestyle has pretty much vanished.  Forced to compete in the labor market against illegal aliens which have flooded the labor pool, are willing to be paid under the table, and who are far more prone to be exploited by unscrupulous employers, the relative earning potential of that carpenter or bricklayer has significantly eroded.  That segment of the middle class is sinking, and they’re pretty clear about  the cause of their troubles.

It doesn’t help that the illegal alien apologists have been attempting to appropriate the legacy of the civil rights movement for their own use, which has outraged quite a few.  African Americans in the 50’s and 60’s were scrupulously trying to adhere to the law and leverage that high regard for lawful behavior from both the purely legal perspective as well as the moral one.  To have folks try to protect lawbreaking by wrongly cloaking it in the civil rights mantle is pretty outrageous to some, and it does potentially damage the legacy of that historic movement.  To many African Americans who were involved in that struggle, they didn’t confront police dogs and fire hoses for the purpose of allowing illegal aliens to damage the economic future of their children.

Now that 73% of Virginians will get their wish in Prince William and Loudoun Counties and have police officers inquire about legal status during traffic stops, I expect this growing consensus that is building across ethnic and economic lines will help other areas of the state improve their communities in a similar fashion.  This is going to be a big topic of discussion in Richmond during the next legislative session, as well as in many Board Chambers in counties across Virginia.

It’s about time.

    Greg:
Thought after seeing those crazy pics on the Mexicnas without Borders website –if you already did not know this translation website already, I use http://babelfish.altavista.com/ for a pretty decent translation from Spanish to English. Try it for a nice slice of propaganda–we really need some folks putting out our message in Spanish, my guess is the translators on their side are “translating” it inot their own agenda message.

Keep up the good work–you are a brave man to lead us on this.

Greg, let me thank you for the work you are doing and the inspiration.
The county where I live is sandwiched between 2 santuary counties, Denver, and the people’s republic of boulder. In our county they have taken one step I have not seen discussed on your blog, when you plead on anything as simple as a speeding ticket the judge will ask you if you are a legal US citizen. If you answer “no” you may get away with it but you have just perjured yourself and committed a felony.

The other thing more in line with your post is that not only are our current tradesmen being squeezed by lower wages, our teenagers are not entering the trades. Young people used to learn a trade during their last couple years of school or just after graduating. They can’t afford to work for the wages offered to most apprentices/unskilled workers unless they are living at home.

We are quickly reaching a point where there will be no Americans who can do the job because an entire generation found something else to do.

    Keep up the Good Fight.

And on the heels of the survey, I thought you might enjoy this email I sent to Kohls Dept Store Corporate today. Their email addess is customerservice@kohls.com

    TO: Kohls Corporate Office

While shopping at the Kohls in Manassas, VA (located in the United States of America) today there were several announcements made over the audio system that I, as a United States citizen and English language speaking person, could not understand. Perplexed, I went to the Customer Service desk. Being the second in line I patiently waited until it was my turn to speak with your customer service representative. There were 4 women behind me in line.

When it was my turn, I told the representative that because the announcements were being made in a foriegn language, I could not understand the message. I then asked to someone translate it into
English. The rep told me that she too is a U. S. citizen and did not understand Spanish and therefore could not translate it for me. She called the manager.

While waiting for the manager, the other women in line and I began to talk. They thanked me for speaking up and said that they too were upset over not understanding the message broadcast over the audio system. They indicated they would also wait for the manager and have the message translated into English for them too.

The manager came and this was explained to her. She said that the message was the standard, “if you use your Kohls credit card, you get an extra 15% off.” I asked her how I was supposed to know that since
I speak the language of the United States which is English. She said that CORPORATE authorized this because “THE CUSTOMER BASE IS HISPANIC.”

Myself and the other 4 women who are not Hispanic were amazed. I told the manager that this was not acceptable and she provided me with this email address to lodge my complaint. The others also indicated that they too were going to complain and pass the information onto their friends, families, and co-workers. One of the women thanked me and said that she wanted to do “something” about this issue but never knew what to do.

So, Kohls. I am offended by your company policy of broadcasting in a foriegn language with NO deference to this country and this country’s legal citizens. Speak ENGLISH or move to a Spanish speaking nation.
Many of the employees at the Manassas Kohls were speaking Spanish. With your announcement being in Spanish and your employees speaking Spanish with a “Hispanic customer base”, it also causes me to wonder if you are actually employing legal citizens or are you employing illegal aliens. If so, rethink that policy because it is against the law.

    As a reminder:
Manassas is in Virginia. Virginia is in the United States. The language of the United States is English.

I had a similar experience at Costco a few weeks ago. The lady working the checkout line I used was spanish, and she was talking with a co-worker in the next line, and she too was spanish. Well, after being greeted with a “hi how are you”, she ignored me and went back to talking spanish with her co-worker. At that point, I was pissed. I spoke with the manager and she said unless a customer is unable to speak English, Costco employees are not supposed to use a foreign language. The way she talked to me made me believe I was not the first to complain about this.

I think we just need to speak up more and let the stores know we do not like this two language system.

I have this happen all over the place in Manassas. My thing now is Hispanics (I don’t know if they are illegal or not) and their driving and crossing the street habits. Two weeks ago I was just past Sudley Manor Drive going 45 mph toward I-66 (a miracle) when I see this movement out of the right corner of my eye. I instinctively hit my brakes and this Hispanic male ran right in front of me at full speed. He was carrying a backpack and the left front fender of my car knocked it out of his hand and into the ditch. I was that close. Had I not slowed down on instinct, he would have surely been dead. I have had several close calls with pedestrians crossing the street illegally, but this was the closest I have ever come to hitting one of them.
Tonight we were going on Sudley manor when another Hispanic male ran the red light coming from the shopping center, and I had to swerve all the way in the right lane to miss him by inches. Had I not I would have T-boned him and injured my wife, myself and likely killed him.

I’ve noticed that they seem to have a problem understanding what STOP signs mean.

Kind of odd, too, since they’re the same shape and color as the ones in Mexico, except those say ALTO instead of STOP.

Then you get the ones that like to drive 35MPH in a 45MPH zone. Apparently the passing lane in Mexico is on the right so they drive slow in the left lane.

Let’s also not forget their cultural propensity to drive drunk — it is, after all, an accepted practice in Mexico, along with cock-fighting and sex with 12-year-old girls, among other things.

It’d be nice if it would happen, but don’t bet on it. We must not slack off the recent defeat of that American Unconditional Surrender Bill was only one Battle in a long War for this Nations survival. The good news is Americans are finally waking up but the Hour is late and the Danger is Great!
Politicians with a few exceptions like Ron Paul could care less about this Nation or its future or Americans Citizens that have played by the Rules, Paid out taxes, Obeyed the Laws, Fought our Wars and built this Nation! They will do or support anything or anyone they think will translate into Money or Votes for them and their Party! Their Lust for Power, Money and Votes transcends any and all loyally to this Nation and American Citizens! Look where all the Democrat Presidential Candidates, Democrat Senators and Many of the Republicans voted on the Amnesty Bill! The good news is Americans are finally waking up! A recent Rasmussen Report on why the Amnesty failed reviled that 84 Percent of Americans think that most of our Politicians will sell their Vote for campaign contributions. One can only wonder what planet the 16% came from that disagreed!
Any American that makes the effort to study the issues on the Amnesty & Illegal Aliens as per Education level , School drop out rate, Crime rate, Gang rate, Incarnation rate, Births out of Wed-Lock rate, Welfare rate, Disrespect for Laws, Loyally to their home Nation & hate for America, La Raza manifesto, Environmental damage, Pollution, Congestion, Schools and Education, Water, Energy use, Medical care, Third world diseases, Taxes etc. can only reach one inescapable conclusion that the Amnesty bill with our open Borders would have turned this Nation into an Spanish speaking Third World Cesspool of Crime, Corruption, Drugs, Poverty, Misery and Cruelly!
In other words, the same type Society the Illegal Aliens have built in their Home Countries!
The forces arrayed against the Citizens are formidable! We have the Chamber of Commerce, Business looking for a unlimited supply of cheap labor with costs paid by the tax payers, Many tax supported Spanish org. like La Raza the Racist Hate Org. that helped write the last Amnesty, Latino Governments, Catholic church, The National News Media, Nearly all of the Elected Democrats, Some labor unions, & in all probability the Mexican Drug Cartel. Those forces are supplying 100,s of Millions Dollars to buy Political votes. In addition, we have many Compassion American Citizens that feel the plight of poor people crossing our open Borders, as we all do. But turning this Nation into another Third World Cesspool in the end will hurt not only Americans but the millions of Citizens of the World that still have Immigrating to American legally as a dream that sustains them!
Opposing them is only ordinary hard working Americans struggling to pay bills and care for their Families. They have watched with increasing alarm as our jobs are outsourced & Illegal Aliens have poured across the open borders to drive down wages in the remaining Jobs that cannot be outsourced. While destroying our Culture and Killing, Raping and Robbing American Citizens by the 10,s of thousands!
What can we do? In spite of a Majority of American citizens opposed to Amnesty and open borders the defeat of the last bill was carried by a small number of Patriotic Citizens that donated time and money to Originations like numbersusa, fair and others, wrote letters, send faxes and called their Senators and Representatives.
If we are going to secure the Future of this Nation for our Children and Grandchildren & for Citizens all over the world as a Beacon of Light and Freedom in an increasing dark and dangerous world, more is required!
All Citizens that realize the Danger that this Nation Faces must get more involved and demand our borders are closed and Immigration laws enforced! For citizens that are uncertain or have mixed feelings need to Educate their selves on the on the issues. I am certain an objective, unbiased study will convince most that Open borders and Amnesty is not in the Best interest of this Nation or indeed the World!
Make no mistake, the Dark Forces that support Globalization, Open Borders, and One World Order are already plotting behind closed doors how to push their agenda through the next time!

Why is it so seemingly difficult to ascertain people’s bigotry and racism? To a certain extent, I can readily understand how people have frustrations, and without question, they have every legitimate right to display those frustrations in a respectful manner. However, the vast majority of anti-immigrant commentary displayed on this blog is dominated by superficiality. If a person takes a series of events into account, (let’s say a series of events that lead someone in the direction of having a fervent anti-immigrant stance) and because of the frustration generated from those events, dwells upon them, the outcome has a tendency to display a particular set of attitudes premised upon emotional, visceral kinds of reactions. Moreover, when these kinds of attitudes and emotions reverberate long enough in the mind of someone, they also have the tendency to alter that person’s perception of reality, effectively preventing any alternative modes of thought from arising which may or may not, lead to, let’s say, the truth of the matter. Surprisingly, there are some relatively simple ways to consider the emotive foundations of racism and bigotry. If do not have the experience of living in a society where you are constantly surrounded by governmental or police corruption, there are certain levels of understanding that you cannot and probably will not possess, which put you one step closer to lining up a list of grievances solely contingent upon prejudicial notions, which find their provenance not in intellectual deliberation, but in the convenience of a emotive, visceral response. If you do not have the experience of living in a society where your socioeconomic conditions are exacerbated by your minority status, ethnic or otherwise, your intellectual processes may get snagged on a situation in which you do not possess the necessary skills to understand, let’s say, an immigrant’s plead for equal rights. As a consequence, and an unfortunate one at that, what may have been previously predominant (your intellectual processes) now have fallen by the wayside, corrupted by a series of unfortunate events. If you do not have the experience of living in a society where your cultural traditions have been put into question by, let’s say, a colonizing force of some kind, or an overbearing economic or military force (wait a second…doesn’t that sound like colonialism?) there is a very good chance of your intellectual processes relinquishing themselves, effectively succumbing to the emotive pressures of a event, (which many arguments on this blog seem to be substantiated by - that is, the emotive pressures of an event) and presenting you with a distorted perception of reality, mistaking the single, solitary piece(s) for the whole. If you do not have the experience of a living a society where maybe not even you, but someone else feels so strongly a love and care for their family that they would risk their lives to break the law because of their immediate needs to get into this country, find somewhere where they can work, and feel confident that they can send whatever amount of money back to their families after they’ve spent enough just to survive to be able to do it all over again, you are building the infrastructure of intolerance and hate. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to take that much to fill out that infrastructure. Racism, bigotry, and intolerance (intolerance seems to be the largest one on this blog) are concepts that are totalizing in nature - that is, for a racist, for a bigot, for an intolerant person to make a supposed “legitimate” argument for his or her supremacy or what have you, you are forced to make a totalizing argument, i.e., saying that all African-Americans are this, all Hispanics are this, etc. The fatal error of all of these arguments is that to completely dismantle any of them, all you need is ONE - one single example that provides a successful alternative. The example of someone breaking the law in order to help his or her family is one of many, unfortunately for the racists, the bigots, and the intolerant people of the world. For those of you who may entertain the concepts of racism, bigotry, or intolerance, truth, a sound argument, and the rest of humanity are not in your favor.

Greetings from Mexifornia, the formerly great state of California. If you are upset about the encroachment of Spanish in our daily lives, please make your unhappiness known to those who push it. For example:

–Don’t shop at big box stores that have bilingual advertising and signage. I make it a point to write letters or emails letting them know why I don’t shop at their stores. I try whenever possible to support small businesses as those are still mostly staffed by English-speaking Americans.

–Don’t accept any kind of bilingual direct mail advertisements. If any company dares to send me some flyer, letter or brochure that is bilingual, I send it back to them with slogans like “This is an English speaking country” and “I don’t patronize bilingual advertisers” written across them with a big black Sharpie marker. It only costs me a stamp.

–Complain verbally as the above posters did about Spanish-language announcements in stores.

–Join Pro-English and US English, both organizations that are standing up for our historiclal language with lobbying etc. Donate generously.

Right now advertisers take it for granted that they can pursue the Spanish-speaking market without losing English-speaking customers. Our job is to disabuse them of this erroneous notion. Never lose an opportunity to show them that shoving Spanish down our throats WILL cost them big-time from the more affluent English-speaking market.

“And yes they are in my neighborhood. We need to clean house.”

put in the current context: could be seen as vaguely racist or at least, slightly sympathetic to racists.

put in the context of the Jiw Crow era South: “And yes they are in my neighborhood. We need to clean house.” - overtly racist

If you do not support racist causes or claim to not be sympathetic to racist causes, you need to stop using the language of racism. Think extremely hard about the words you’re using. To be unaware of the language of our own cultural tradition, (Jim Crow era South) to be set yourself up to be unknowingly racist. If you claim not to be racist, you cannot make that mistake.

When we discuss like human beings a topic of such magnitude, the discussion should be predicated upon an intellectual discourse whose foundations are transparency and validity - not raw emotion or a supposed ‘intuitive” feeling. If those raw emotions and supposed “intuitive” feelings cannot be substantiated by transparency and validity, it provides all the more reason to abandon them.

    dis56 has said nothing racist.

It is you Robert F. who are the racist, you seem to be of the type of people who throw the race card at every opportunity you have. You’re scared that your little talisman of “racist” will stop having any power over people, aren’t you? And you know what, you’re right. Where I live Home Depot corporate shills are accusing anyone who objects to a big box store in their neighborhood of being “racist.” The word is so over-used that it is quickly losing all meaningfulness and it certainly isn’t scaring anyone away from defending our country.

PS how are open borders of benefit to black Americans? Where I live black Americans are fleeing from Hispanic crime and gangs just like whites are. In fact blacks in LA are being deliberately ethnically cleansed from neighborhoods that they’ve lived in for decades, forced out by “Latino” gangs which target them for violence and even death. Watts and Compton are now majority “Latino.”

And blacks are suffering more from the invasion than whites because they (generally) have fewer resources with which to run away from immigration anarchy. On top of that young blacks are being pushed out of minimum wage jobs because they don’t speak Spanish.

You should look on youtube for the black guy from LA who keeps talking about how he can make a Burger King burger in 12 seconds, but he can’t get a job at BK because he doesn’t speak Spanish.

With all due respect, you are not in the proper position to make such a presumptive judgment. When you say “you seem to be of the type of people who throw the race card at every opportunity you have” what are you actually accomplishing? Nothing of significance can come as a consequence of your statement. Consider this for a moment. You’re attempting to retaliate against something I’ve said by saying I “seem” to be something that you apparently think I am. Well, at this point you tend to favor obfuscating the issue (whether it is intentional or not isn’t the issue) rather than coming back with a nuanced, carefully thought-out response. If I “seem” to be something, then state it specifically, which would only go to prove the validity of your statement, although herein lies a problem I’m not sure can be rectified. When you react with a emotive comment such as yours, (I’m quoting it again so as to avoid confusion “you seem to be of the type of people who throw the race card at every opportunity you have”)- it fails to prove it, strictly be definition, but moreover, by lack of coherence.

Your next comment was equally bizarre. Here, you state that “You’re scared that your little talisman of “racist” will stop having any power over people, aren’t you? And you know what, you’re right.” Apparently, I’m lacking enlightenment because for whatever reason, I cannot point to anything within my comments, implicitly or outright, that somehow relates to your scrutiny. Think that carefully through for a moment.

Interestingly, my reaction to what dis56 said had nothing to do a border issue of any kind, especially with consideration given to African-Americans, and whatever kind of thought process somehow makes a connection between my comments and what dis56 said is not coherent. If you go back look over my comments, I specifically DO NOT state anything about how open borders would be a benefit to African-Americans.

Rather, I mention that “If you do not support racist causes or claim to not be sympathetic to racist causes, you need to stop using the language of racism. Think extremely hard about the words you’re using. To be unaware of the language of our own cultural tradition, (Jim Crow era South) is to set yourself up to be unknowingly racist. If you claim not to be racist, you cannot make that mistake.” Herein lies no comment about open borders in relation to African-Americans, but a discussion of the language that dis56 was using. For whatever reason, I cannot make the connection between having a discussion about the language dis56 was using and having that somehow relate to talking about open borders with respect to African-Americans.

Furthermore, my explanation of your ill-fated attempt to marginalize my comment suggests that because you cannot put forth a substantive argument that points to “real” things that I “actually” said, that you need to fabricate evidence in order to support your claim. If you want to try to point to a argumentative mistake I may have made, then it is not only a customary option to specifically quote something I’ve said, but the only viable one at that.

Mary, I don’t believe that Robert F. is throwing the race card at all…he is merely advocating the avoidance of language that either lends itself to the charge of “racist” or opens what could be a productive debate to the appearance of racism.

I know, from being a regular reader of BVLV, that the people here are primarily concerned with the lawlessness of the situation and how it is affecting their quality of life, with good reason. I also know that LEGAL immigrants are equally concerned with the illegal alien situation and how it is also adversely affecting them, with a very few exeptions. I, as I have stated before, am myself formerly a legal immigrant and now, for many decades, a naturalized citizen. We do, indeed, have a very unique situation here in that the sheer volume of illegal aliens has begun to tip the economic scale in favor of big business that routinely takes advantage of this source of cheap labor to the detriment of small business which cannot compete unless they also choose to break the law. The people who really lose are the legal American workforce who can either not find jobs in this new “PC” society or cannot afford to live as citizens at the same wages under which this illegal work force is able to flourish. The emotions run high and it’s very understandable, as it is inevitable.

    Robert F.,

Your remarks were an attempt to intimidate dis56 , weren’t they? Now admit it. You pulled out your little pseudo-intellenctual diatribe and you thought that people would shrink away in horror at the dreaded “R” word.

“And yes they are in my neighborhood. We need to clean house.”

How is this “racist”? It could have been said about illegal alien Russians for all you know. And “cleaning house” could be a reference to getting rid of the illegal alien enablers in our “government.”

After all they are the ones who are occupying the House — and the Senate and the White House too.

“Racism” is indeed used as later-day McCarthyite techniqure to demonize opponents on all sorts of questions of the day, don’t pretend you don’t know that. Which is why I brought up the point about “racism” now being used to stifle opponents of big box stores. You can use “racism” as an excuse to support anything these days.

If you are not a pro-open borders type, you certainly sound like one. That is why I brought up the effects of open borders on black Americans. The argument the open borders types make usually goes something like this, “We were mean to the blacks and the Native Americans so therefore we have to give the Mexicans our country.” Which move would do nothing but harm black Americans and Native Americans, btw.

If you’re not open borders then explain why you adopt their techniques.

Some extremely intellectual blogs and articles which liberals cannot look down on or call racist. Very useful to send on to main-stream-media reporters:

Dean Baker is a very liberal economist with iconoclastic views on immigration.

    http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/beat_the_press

George Borgas is a professor of economics at Harvard and a Cuban immigrant. He is generally acknowledged professionally to be the expert on the economics of immigration and is a skeptic on the benefits of immigration.

Then there are the recent results by Robert Putnam showing that diversity increases isolation of all groups, including within-group isolation. It reduces “social capital”. Putnam puts a liberal spin on his well-reported quantitative results.

    Robert Hume,

As I said on another thread, the minute you let them put you on the defensive as a “racist,” is the minute you’ve lost the argument.

Put THEM on the defensive. Make THEM defend things like:

–Subsidizing cheap labor for corporate welfare
–Enabling Mexico’s corrup ruling class — including Carlos Slim Helou, now the richest man in the world — to evade responsibility for their masses of poor people
–Forcing struggling middle-class Americans to assume a tax burden for supporting the illegals while Carlos Slim Helou gets off scot-free to enjoy his billions

Use their liberalism against them. Make them defend the blatant corporate welfare that “cheap” illegal alien labor represents. Make them defend the Mexican ruling class. Make them explain why Mr. & Mrs. Joe America, struggling to get by on 50K a year, must support never-ending social services for illegals while the Mexican ruling class gets off with paying nothing.

I am most impressed with the last comment, even as a person who considers Help Save Manassas a poor influence on relations between Mexican and American cultures and too tough on people who are merely acting rationally to their economic conditions. Especially when you consider the wage gap between the two countries and that the benefits of largely U.S.-engineered globalization-friendly economic policies of the last decade have evaded Mexico. It is understood that people cannot violate laws, but it should also be understood that trying to defame the typical undocumented migrant worker as a criminal, in the same light as a murderer, is provocative for its own sake.

Surely, aside from people’s overly ideological responses to hearing Spanish in the checkout line, there are reasonable compromises to be made. We can all learn a little Spanish, as we should expect all Americans to speak English. Don’t make illegal immigration reform a cover for people who are just scared of other people.

Furthermore, as Mary shows well, learn whole-heartedly the other side and look for its cracks - no cheap shots!

Try “all those in America” for “all Americans” in the line, “as we should expect…” I immediately saw how that sounded incomplete after clicking submit. Thanks.

No PMLIATB…you will not prevail because of people like you who are likely to galvanize the rest of the nation against you and your compadres. What you have been saying here is exactly what the extremists on the anti-illegal alien side of the issue have been saying…that you people are here to take over our country and turn it into Mexico. You give their argument wings.

If we the citizens of the USA want to win this war, yes it is a war, we cannot keep being so politically correct. Being PC is a handicap forced on us by the powers that be.
If my wanting illegal aliens out of my County, wanting anchor baby citizenship stopped and not wanting to hear or see the Spanish language when I go shopping makes me a racist, then so be it. I am a proud racist. Proud of my Country, my English language and my white skin.
It seems many white people are so scared of being called a racist that they allow anyone with darker skin to step all over them. We get pushed out of good schools, good jobs and damn, even if you worked all your life, just try to get a helping hand from the welfare office if you happen to run on hard times.
I know my message is not typed full of big words like some of the people here, but I am just a normal person trying to get the word out that if you value the American way of life that we had 25 or 30 years ago it is time to get the boxing gloves off and get down to some bare knuckle fighting to save your a**.
Oh, and I am a ex Californian who moved to Arkansas, after I got tired of all the mexician men trying to hit on my daughter who was 12 years old at the time. I miss California..the way it was when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s.

I’m American. Illegals. Get the HELL OUT. You have no rights. Why do you guys insist on having rights? The ONLY right you have is to leave the county. Thank you and goodbye.
