What Is The Deal With Manes Pierre ?

By Greg L | 6 August 2007 | Prince William County | 21 Comments

Manes Pierre, candidate for the Prince William County School Board, has decided to weigh in with the Washington Post about his support of illegal aliens, and is proposing a “solution” that I imagine voters in Prince William County would find pretty enraging. Does this attitude have something to do with the suspicious circumstances under which he was removed from his teaching position at Stonewall Middle School? First, his “solution”:

To secure a kinder, gentler, more civil community, we should:

· Hold diversity dialogues and empowerment sessions throughout the county.

· Invite successful immigrants in our community as facilitators of the dialogues.

· Use the language of reconciliation with our immigrant neighbors to decrease the tensions.

· Emphasize to young immigrants the need for and the value of education.

Um, this is about breaking the law, Mr. Pierre. Should this same treatment you desire for illegal aliens be extended to those who conduct dogfights, for example? Is that an element of “cultural diversity” we should celebrate rather than condemn? Mr. Manes seems to have an unusual perspective on the subject of unlawful behavior, where “reconciliation” is apparently a higher priority than enforcing the law.

I guess his perspective makes more sense when you consider the following, uncorroborated information I received from one of Mr. Pierre’s former colleagues:

He was escorted out of Stonewall Middle School by the police and never came back. His computer was confiscated. The staff was told nothing and also told not to discuss it.

We do know that Mr. Pierre was removed from his position as a teacher, and apparently Mr. Pierre doesn’t agree with that decision by the school system. Mr. Pierre hasn’t explained what happened, and because this is a personnel issue, it’s not something the school system is at liberty to discuss. No charges have been filed against Manes Pierre, but if this account of his removal is accurate, it really raises a lot of questions.

Just what does one have to do in order to not just be fired as a teacher, but be escorted out of a Middle School in Prince William County by the police? If they confiscated his computer, is it possible that this candidate for the Prince William County School Board was involved in child pornography? An improper relationship with a minor via email? Why did this happen? And why the cover-up?

How about we “hold a diversity dialogue” with you, Mr. Pierre, so you can explain why someone removed from their teaching position under these circumstances should be considered as a candidate for the school board? I think the voters deserve to understand the full story about what happened here.

UPDATE: In the original post, I reversed Manes Pierre’s first and last names. Sorry for any confusion.

Isn’t his name Manes Pierre? Any special reason for reversing it? It’s Manes Pierre on his website, in the Post, and in other press clippings. I would agree that the circumstances of Pierre’s losing his job should be revealed, but you said first the info you had was uncorroborated, then you said “if accurate,” but after that you said “someone removed from their teaching position under these circumstances.” So on the one hand you are alleging and on the other you are concluding. Wouldn’t it be better to be more careful before suggesting that someone may be a pedophile given the lack of charges and the lack of corroboration? Unless there is other info you are not mentioning. It isn’t as though police are shy about arresting people for child pornography or relationships with minors, but child pornography isn’t the only thing a computer gets confiscated for, if that happened.

One thing is certain, however, Manes Pierre writes some really really REALLY bad poetry.

I’ll tell you what his “deal” is: He is a marxist-socialist, who is teaching our kids, and wants to be a member of the school-board, to further push his socialist agenda. He’s a shining example of why we need school-vouchers and home-schooling. He also demonstrates why we must re-elect Julie Lucas.

It is also my understanding that he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with MSF, WWC and Unity in the Community.

What I’d really like to know is if he was “fired” at Stonewall, why is he teaching at Freedom?

    Fed UP 1

This would not be the first time a teacher was let go at one school and ended up at another.

It is also a fact that the School System hides many things that go on. I wonder if this is one?

The information that is out on Pierre’s in the paper and his traveling to Manassas to speak before that anti american group is enough to tell us “where there is smoke, there is sure fire” that something is wrong.

Let’s get the facts out there on this man.

Batson, that’s a good question you end with. But wouldn’t his teaching now, even ESOL, at a high school make it unlikely that he was fired from his previous school for the reasons GL suggests? The liability issue for the school would be huge.

The county is so desperate to fill ESOL slots that it’s paying bonuses to attract teachers. Under those circumstances, is it that surprising that a teacher who is escorted out of one school and has his computer seized, presumably to obtain evidence, is then hired as an ESOL teacher elsewhere? Particularly if the problems were minor enough, or not solid enough, that prosecutors thought they would not be able to obtain a conviction?

It might not be right, but when the need for ESOL teachers is exploding, you have to expect that standards will suffer somewhat.

Standards? You should see who the county is hiring to fill special educ. slots. Of course, if someone can coach anything, they have a great chance of being hired to teach ESOL or Special Educ. and then the county works to get them certified ASAP in order to meet NCLB standards. Many county principals are former coaches…it’s how it works in PWC schools.

Do some research on the truant officer at one of the county high schools (actually, more than one). There’s one, well-known, who was hired to do one thing: Coach men’s basketball. But, he does a crappy job doing what he was hired to do - making sure kids that don’t come to school are disciplined for their actions. Too often that’s what these local schools care about the most: Athletics. Of course, what else is new?

Pierre is not listed on the Freedom High School website as one of their teachers. I’m guessing he’s no longer there (?).

Wow, this guy’s a joke. The “endorsements” on his web site are all stuff by former teachers and guidance counselors, none more recent than 1999 except for some form letter things (one from Jeb Bush). He’s worked around here for several years, at SEED in DC and at Stonewall, and apparently no one there is enamored enough to “endorse” him, or even give him a sentence in a performance review good enough for him to call an endorsement.

That Washingon Post op.ed was April 2006, over a year ago. It fooled me also.

    Greg,

Very interesting about the bonuses. How about for the shortage in math and science? Speech is also another critical shortage area. Any bonuses there?

Not to my knowledge. As far as I know, the only bonuses offered are for those who speak spanish.

And in fairness to Prince William County, NCLB is probably the cause.

Gotta work this one hard, otherwise he will surprise us all and win; he has a voting block…different folks, of course…but just like Faisal.

Speaking of Faisal, any word yet on Tom Kopko’s decision on the results of the 51st?

He very well could win. It all depends on who gets out the vote. Actually, it all depends on WHO votes and how often. Sigh, I am so jaded.

Well, fortunately it is NOT a convention, otherwise, Dolph, I would have to agree with you. There are some on this site who have wrongly criticized Ms. Lucas’ votes in the past (they wrongly believed that she had the power to raise taxes or they were against her for someone she supported back in 1999/2000 time frame) but when put in their place by those in the know, they quickly got quiet.

But like someone who KNOWS how to win elections (she won her last with 65% of the vote, more than ANY other politician on the ballot), Ms. Lucas is NOT out there protesting outside Mr. Pierre’s house, rather, she is out knocking on doors NOT talking ANYONES vote for granted.

…and in reality, if RPV recommendation had been followed, Julie Lucas would be the Republican party 51st District HOD nominee. Oh well, I guess being Chairman, PWCRC, has more perks than financial. :(

I really don’t understand today’s PWCRC. By tolerating Kopko’s antics without any censure whatsoever, they are not only encouraging his continuing malfeasance, but the appearance that malfeasance is a common Republican practice. How long before honest people will want to have no association with the Republican Party whatsoever? They are becoming an embarrassment, particularly to people like me who helped build this organization in the 70’s and 80’s. I feel like I wasted some of the best years of my life.

I have a friend who is a teacher in PWC (I won’t say which subject, but it’s not English) and they told me they are being asked (more like instructed) to take the first 5-10 minutes of each class to teach sentence structure, and other grammar lessons, because of ESOL concerns.

    Bob Sentz,

I have no doubt that is happening but…it is probably because of SOL concerns most likely, not esol specifically. You did not mention the level. Schools must pass math and English to satisfy the conditions of the No Child Left Behind Act. In order for schools to show annual yearly progress, the sub-groups (special ed, economically disadvantaged, minority, and esol) must show a certain percent improvement.

The above is a great oversimplification of what goes on but that is the gist of what is driving all of this: overall improvement of SOL scores.

Re: Pierre teaching at Freedom High School after being removed from Stonewall Jackson High School -

This was on Pierre’s author website:

“Pierre’s response to a Potomac News’ article
Posted on 04/07 at 01:03 PM
Kudos to Ricardo Juarez for leading the hispanic community toward voicing their immigration concerns! However, I agree with the Potomac News’ contention that another way to engage civic responsibility is by contacting our congressmen/women or writing letters to the editor. I have no doubt that Ricardo Juarez will equally support the call to our hispanic youths to resume their educational responsibilities. Manes Pierre Teacher Freedom High School Woodbridge
    manesmpierre ”

And from a PWC school press release dated 5/24/07:
“Manes Pierre, ESOL teacher at Freedom High School, presented at a conference organized by the Association of Haitian Professionals and held at Howard University. The event focused on the wealth of published material available to educators in French, Haitian Creole, and English. Pierre also discussed his book, The Man and His Thoughts, published by Dorrance Publishing in Pennsylvania.”
