Ateacher,

Which cheap-a** school system do you work for? Good grief. The admin sounds like the custodian(s) have him/her really 'whipped.' I am outraged on your behalf.

It also sounds like you might just work for the world's dumbest administrator. Penny wise and pound foolish. What does he/she think all the little dears are going to do to those sacred floors?

I would hire a couple of kids from last year to move things around and then remember to put in for a transfer come spring time. You work for an idiot.

Let us know the school system. Remember there is strength in numbers.
Don't tell the specific school, just the system.

I work for a school. Last year the admin decided that every teacher needed to pack and move rooms. It took me four weeks and my own money to buy boxes, pack, and tape. The contents of my room have been moved two doors down the hall. I just received a notice from my admin that I have 40 hours beginning on 8/20, to unpack, arrange my classroom, and break down the boxes. Apparently I need to have this done prior to my contracted teacher workdays that begin 8/26. As of 8/26 I am required to attend meetings. However I am not permited to move any furniture that might scrape the floors. To move furniture, I must sign up with the sole custodian, and only he may move it as his schedule requires. One custodian and 75 teachers for 40 hours..you do the math. So I can spend the last 40 hours of my vac time struggling to do piecemeal work, or I can hire two day laborers and get it done in a day...without scraping floors. My husband is all for the hiring of others, that way I actually do not have to spend the last of my vac working outside my contract, and can spend them however with my children.

Dolph,
The permits get renewed every year or so. The company who rebuilt the Pentagon after the 9/11 attacks employed a lot of Salvadorans with this permit. Donald Rumsfeld even posed in a picture with all of them.
I am not saying that this are good people. I am saying that when people are given a chance to earn their living legally they go to work and contribute to this economy.
It is not only for the Salvadorans there are a lot of countries that got them Liberia was fighting lately to get the permit renewed. Their citizens have had that permit since 1991.

I always check out emails that purport to be factual but appear to be a bit too good to be true on www.snopes.com.

Here's what snopes has to say about the "statistics" on the costs of illegal immigration ... the data appear to have been gleaned from a variety of sources and vary in accuracy, http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/taxes.asp

Among other things, Snopes reports that Huddle (widely quoted by anti-immigration and anti-illegal immigration forces) was paid to do his study by a group seeking major reductions in legal immigration. Later studies have criticized his methodology and reached different results.

One thing is clear. The federal government's increasing practice of establishing unfunded mandates and devolving responsibility to state and local governments without funding and Virginia's law limiting the ability of localities to raise revenues are significant factors in the stress localities feel ... the economic benefits of immigration are flowing upstream (i.e., tax revenues are going to the federal government and then the state government) while the demand for services (including programs needed to assimilate lawful immigrants like ESL and civic education for adults) remains largely at the local level.

One good example of this is the fact (reported in a good article in the Winchester paper today) that the feds pay for the detention of criminal aliens only when they have been convicted of two misdemeanors or one felony and served more than 4 days and, because the President routinely zeroes out the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program in his budget, many localities receive no reimbursement at all (national average is estimated to be 25% of costs).

And, where the detention is for civil immigration violations (i.e., where the localities volunteer to do the federal government's job) or for a first misdemeanor offense, there is no federal funding available at all to pay these costs of the failed federal immigration system.

So, those advocating increased local law enforcement efforts to step up detentions should recognize that local budget priorities will need to be adjusted to meet the increased costs of the program.

One final note about sovereignty and the reality of the way the 287g program works ... under the program, local law enforcement officials are supervised by federal ICE officers while doing immigration enforcement and are not subject to local supervision even though they remain local employees. But, in classic fashion, any liability for their screw ups (including civil rights violations) remains with the locality. Local officers are authorized under 287g agreements to do the federal government's paperwork, i.e., to "prepare" detainers and other paper work necessary to initiate the removal/deportation process, but they have no authority to sign the papers ... that's in the discretion of federal ICE officers ... as is the decision whether and when to transfer a detainee to a federal facility.

Do illegal aliens really have the right to rally and march in our streets? I would say no. Illegal aliens, citizens of other nations, should not be involved in our political process.

Ideally the upcoming protests against the PWC resolution should be undertaken only by citizens and residents - not illegals.

I say this not because I have any hope illegals will be prevented from protesting, but because it is a good thought to plant in people's minds - hey these "protesters" include many people who are actually citizens of other nations, why are they marching here? It undermines the effect of the protest.

Lafayette / Dolph

They are building a whole new school on the site while keeping the existing school open. The trailers were on the site for years (growing in numbers over the years of course). They had to relocate the trailers as the construction begins on the new school. The trailers were previously located further into the property and closer to the school.

Open Storm Door/Dolph
I've tried checking PWCPS website, and had no luck. I think Yorkshire Elem. is being renovated and/or added on to. The county acquired several properties along Yorkshire Ln. last year. Does anyone know or have children attending that school?

Fed Up Why do you have to insist that I called you racist? Again I think that the fact that you are educated doesn't mean that you know everything. I insist that your comments doesn't show racism just ignorance.
You can read what I have said before about assimilation or defending your community. This is not the first time I have said it.

Yes, I too shook my head in disgust a few weeks back when I saw them there. Explosive growth and no money to pay for more illegal children. I guess that means my real estate taxes are going up again...

The MP Treasurer will be getting a major ear full from me in person if my taxes go up again to pay for illegals. All MP residents here need to show up in person there with me and demand an accounting as to where they are spending the money. I am all for paying my share into the system to pay for the education of a child citizen of this country, but I will be damned if I pay one more red cent to subsidize the education of a bunch of ungrateful illegals, which as any recent data shows, will most likely drop out anyway. Better prepare for me Mr. Adamson, because I am your worst nightmare when I feel that I am taking the shaft.

Everyone here who lives in the park also needs to run recent comps in December to compare to your next city real estate tax assessment in January. If I don't see a significant drop in value from the city that compares to the plummeting home values in my neighborhood then I will be refuting the bill. Everyone here HAS to do the same. They are taking our money and funneling it into Taj Mahal style projects and setting fire to it in the form of massive ESOL programs and services/support for illegals. Not on my watch. Not anymore.

OpenStormDoor,

I was dumbfounded when I saw those trailers. You do not exaggerate. Coming up Yorkshire Drive, you cannot even see the school.

I would say that is a rather severe impact on county schools!

Speaking of overcrowding in schools... has anyone seen how many trailers have been recently set up at Yorkshire Elementary School. There's easily 15 trailers being set up for the new school year that were not there at the end of the last school session. The kid's basketball court and then some is now gone. That's a lot of growth!

There’s easily 15 trailers being set up for the new school year that were not there at the end of the last school session. The kid’s basketball court and then some is now gone.
TH,

What was the renewal of work permits I read about last year? Was that not an extension for Salvadorans? Truthfully, the entire topic of visas, permits, documents as they relate to immigration is so mind-boggling to me that I steer away from legal vs illegal.

My government has failed to do its job. It has not controlled immigration. In my opinion, what we have now is passive, silent amnesty. It was difficult to squawk about 'that damn amnesty bill' when that is exactly what we have now, only with fewer restrictions.

The lifetime fiscal impact (taxes paid minus services used) for the average illegal alien is $55,000 cost to the American taxpayer in a 5-year span. You personally pay $11,000 every year to illegal aliens.

JOBS (per Center for Immigration Studies - September 2006): Between 2000 and 2005, 4.1 million immigrant workers arrived in the U.S., accounting for 86% of the net increase in the total number of employed persons (16 & older), the highest share ever recorded in the U.S. Of the 4.1 million, between 1.4 and 2.7 million are estimated to be illegal aliens. [Do you still believe the gov't employment rate stats?]

ACTION: Please share this data with elected officials, particularly those who spew the PCBS about all the "contributions of illegal aliens to our society" AND "our economy would collapse without them"! However, NONE of this will matter IF our borders are not secured OR Pres. Bush succeeds in abolishing them (via his SPP, NAU, NAFTA Hwy), and illegal alien murders, drug smugglers and terrorists continue to be welcomed into our country

“But I think Anon and TH have spent the better part of two days trying to say that the immigrants are not from Mexico and that we are racists”
I didn’t say that fed up. I said that a lot of the immigrants in the area are salvadoran. Someone else brought the numbers to show that about 40% were Salvadorans.
I disagreed with you when you use the term Hispanic or Mexican whenever you want to talk about illegal aliens. The hact that you are fighting for your community doesn’t make you a racist, just ignorant. I agree this is the second time I call you ignorant which for me is wrost than racist. A racist has a particular ideology that he follows, an ignorant person just refused to get educated.

People please read what I said: When you ar fighting for your community you are doing a GREAT thing. Most of you are doing that and I don’t consider you racist.
When people just use namecalling rather than arguments then you are ignorant.
I never thought for a second that having the pride you have for your community puts you in the racist category.

HEY TH-Where in your post dated 10 Aug 2007 at 10:05 am (the one above) do you use the word GREAT?
