Tancredo Finishes Strong In Iowa

By Greg L | 11 August 2007 | National Politics | 17 Comments

I’m pretty pleased. Tom Tancredo, what the mainstream media has been characterizing as the darkest of dark horse candidates, placed fourth in the Iowa Straw Poll, according to Fox News. Ahead of Giuliani. Ahead of McCain (not surprising). Also performing well are Mike Huckabee, placing a surprise second, and Brownback who came in third. Mitt Romney topped the list, so we haven’t entirely done away with “Rudy McRomney” yet..

Are actual voters saying that in general the so-called “top tier” candidates aren’t what they want?

This is very welcome news. With this strong result, Tancredo’s campaign will probably gain a lot of momentum.

No, the poll has nothing to say about “top tier” candidates. Three of them didn’t even participate. And no, they shouldn’t have done well anyway if they are top tier. The key at these things is to ID voters and bring them in. If you don’t participate in process, you don’t have people there to vote. Rudy and Fred are still very much in this (John is done already).

Tancredo has lead the charge against illegal immigration! That is what voters want to hear. I don’t know what Corey Stewart was thinking during the last PWC BOSC meeting when he accused Tancredo of making racist statements. Tancredo has guts! No guts, no glory!

Greg - I too am pleased to see Tom Tancredo’s strong showing. I am not surprised that voters in the heartland support him. I have family in Iowa near the Mississippi. Their area received funding to upgrade/repair bridges in the past few years. Contractors and subs brought in illegal aliens. The bridge work is done and illegals have stayed in the area. Legitimate local businesses are now being undercut by those who hire illegals for cash. Schools are being stretched because of significant additional expenses for the children of illegal aliens. My relatives were happy two years ago to ’save’ $1000 by hiring a contractor with illegals to replace a roof. Now their property taxes have gone up because the school system has had to hire many more ESL teachers and ‘resource’ teachers and health professionals.

Tancredo is the man with guts, who says it like it is without hesitation! So far, he’s got my vote!

I couldn’t agree with you more….however….do you REALLY think he would stand a “snowball’s chance…” of being elected?

  6. freedom said on 12 Aug 2007 at 2:07 pm:

I’m afraid that Tom Tancredo’s chances of being elected resemble those of Faisal; if that’s not true, I’d sure love to hear about it…

I voted for Tancredo at CPAC. But I am a huge fan of Mike Huckabee now. I saw Ron Paul did very well the other day, smashing Rudy in the vote. I dont now feel that the Tanc would do well agiest Billery.

    I agree with Freedom…Tancredo doesn’t stand a chance.

My number 1 pick in 2008 is Newt Gingrich…another candidate who doesn’t stand a chance.

What’s with Bolling coming out so soon supporting Mitt? For those of us in tune with the Gill/Bolling affair this is a HUGE red flag for Mitt.

I hear Tancredo spent everything he had for Iowa. So he has very little money at the moment.

Ron Paul has over two million in the bank.

I’m a “Newt guy” too….but don’t think he could overcome baggage either. Unfortunately, there aren’t many good alternatives out there when you look at issues. All I REALLY want to know, since none of ‘em supported Faisal Gill, is who can win? Any of ‘em?

This election does worry me. We need someone that is not a Bush Republican, snice Bushs rating is really going to hurt us come 08.

How can anyone, with a straight face, say that Tancredo fared well? He came in 4th against a list of nobodies (save Romney who bought the result). Not coming in 2nd ruined his chances of ever becoming a top tier candidate. Maybe Huckabee will carry the torch.

I understand it is important to a lot of folks here to have a strong anti-illegal immigrant voice in this race but Tancredo is toast so stop deluding yourselves.

Mixed emotions on Matt’s response. I do agree that in order for Tancredo to be taken seriously he has to win when the “major players” are participating, or at least get a respectable top tier finish.

What worries me is that we get behind someone because they support A POSITION that we agree with passionately. I DO NOT want a 1 issue candidate. I want someone who is the complete package. Many people are behind Rudy because of the leadership he showed during 9-11. But, when you question those same people concerning abortion and gun control, they back off because they didn’t realize that he is pro both.

Granted, I STILL would take a moderate R over ANY of the D’s for president - the most moderate of Ds in my opinion is still too far to the left for me to stomach. Also, I have to admit that I still have not fully made up my mind yet. Like the bumper sticker that I got in the mail just the other day says, “I still remember REAGAN”.

I still don’t think we have the right Republican candidate in the race….whomever that might be. :) Karl Rove? :)

  15. levotb said on 14 Aug 2007 at 4:32 am:

Anyone on this post who says “I’ll vote for anyone with an “R” even a moderate is an utter idiot. Maybe you want another 4-8 years of a RINO or liberal, but why in God’s name would you vote for one of two liberals if those are the only two choices? The GOP is controlled by big business who want illegal aliens and “free trade”. We, the American People, want the Borders SHUT and we DEMAND FAIR TRADE or we stop doing business with our enemy, Red China. They’re killing our pets, poisoning our food, flooding the market with their currency and refusing to import an equal amount of U.S. goods. Only a Tancredo or a Hunter would stand up to the Commies. The others (like Huckabee and Romney) are sell-outs. And unlike Tanc and Hunter, they’re all members of the CFR, an anti-nationalist, anti-America org if I ever saw one…Tanc is the only candidate who will deport illegal aliens–giving ICE its proper orders. Starting with huge companies that employ a gazillion illegals here like MacDonald’s and also …the Federal goverment! Tanc is the only candidate who would abolish the EOIR–the lawyer-led org within the USCIS that delays deportation of illegal aliens. What is needed is “expedited removal”!

  16. freedom said on 14 Aug 2007 at 7:47 am:

Well levotb, if it’s an idiot who votes for a moderate Republican, just how many “D” candidates do you know who would support “expedited, or even NOT so expedited removal”?

So, which do YOU prefer, a Republican with a chance to win…although perhaps moderate…or a “D”? Take your pick.

Reading threads like this, as you wingnuts foam at the mouth about how liberal your slate of candidtes is (do you actually have to kill an illegal alien with your bare hands now to qualify?) makes me smile, and look with glee at the next few years as you continue to march the entire Republican party away from the mainstream and into obscurity.
