Another Blogstorm

By Greg L | 17 August 2007 | Virginia Politics, Blogs | 12 Comments

Who would have thought something like this would set of a firestorm of blogs attacking each other:

“Roscoe [Reynolds] has hired the Yellow Dog Group to run his media online.
http://roscoereynolds.com/20/index.php

That is the Joe Stanley bunch, The Macaca master! The Harris Miller anti semitic flyer, etc.
http://yellowdogstrategy.com/home/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

Something to think about.
Carl”

Ben Tribbet shoots at the ODBA and Carl KiloJim Riley returns fire, as does Carl Kilo, and Leslie Carbone.  Personally, I don’t get it.  Is it that slow a news week that we need to sacrifice electrons over this?

Meanwhile, that greeting card virus is wreaking havoc, and overzealous email system administrators are trying to block huge swaths of IP space from their servers.  If that virus continues to pound us, there won’t be an internet to fight over for many of us, although we Linux geeks are going to be safe.

I cannot tell whether the reference to the anti-Semitic flyer is facetious or not. There was nothing anti-Semitic about anything that Jim Webb said or did with respect to Harris Miller during the 2006 primary campaign.

I would have been very sensitive to it if there had been, but there was none.

    Greg,

While you have the issue of illegal immigration and your outstanding coverage of it, the other blogs have chosen to remain solely in the relm of partisan politics. So, as extensions of the campaigns they variously support, I guess it’s understandable that they would begin to attack each other.. Since we are quickly approaching what may well be a very rough election cycle, the partisan blogs will enter a period of intercine warfare. While I thought this crap would only happen on the tier-2 and 3 blogs, I guess the tier-1’s are not immune.

Bats - there is a tier nothing blog (the one with the mispelling in the name) that attacks BVBL on a daily basis…kind of like that dog in the old Warner Brothers cartoons, you know, the little one that was all bark but no bite.

E-Greeting Card virus is driving me bonkers, I’ve gotten to point my mail server is rejecting 98.5% of email at last check.

Greg, I find it interesting that Ben Tribbett read ODBA correspondence and felt compelled to post about it by making it sound as if there was something underhanded going on. I am surprised others haven’t spoken out about his eavesdropping. Just imagine if a conservative blogger had done that to them…. I posted about it and am linking to others’ comments including you.

Greg, I agree - to a certain extent - that the number of electrons flying over this ought to be somewhat limited. However, the unscrupulous actions of Ben, along with the possibility (um, probability) of breach of privacy in the ODBA, is… well, “disturbing,” at the least.

I am outraged at this vile behavior, and I’m astonished at your disregard for the privacy in the ODBA group. Would you care to discuss the reason for your unconcern? (And yes, that was an honest request for information.)

I know the one you speak of. I call it the “Death Star”. It looks imposing until a small rebel X drops a bomb up it’s exhaust port. BOOM.

Jonathan, there was a Fredericksburg Free-Lance Star article on that flier that interviewed several media and marketing professors asking them if they thought it was anti-Semitic.

    http://www.fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2006/062006/06082006/197593

But what caught Dan Smolen’s attention was the cartoon that accompanied the text: That of a man with a hook nose and money spilling from his pockets.

It was a caricature of Harris Miller, Webb’s opponent in Tuesday’s Democratic primary who happens to be Jewish.

The image made Smolen, who is Jewish and Stafford County’s Democratic chairman, uncomfortable.

“I don’t think whoever did the cartoon caricature meant this as an ethnic slur,” he said, “but the effect of it was very troubling.”

    . . .

“That doesn’t look so good. There’s no question to me that’s replete with anti-Semitic stereotypes,” said Mark Feldstein, an associate professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University. “I’m not someone who readily cries anti-Semitism, but I think it’s hard to look at this and not see a number of anti-Semitic stereotypes plugged into this ad, from the hook nose to the ‘antichrist’ to the money-grubbing character.”

Bruce Newman, a professor of marketing at DePaul University and editor of the Journal of Political Marketing, said it reminded him of 1930s German propaganda, where the Jewish character was subtly made out to be the thieving villain.

“It very much crosses the line,” said Newman, who is Jewish. “I’m speaking with my professional hat on now. It’s a modern-day caricature of the quote-unquote villain, the one who’s out to make life difficult and hurt people in the town. I’ve seen literature from those days and this offends me quite a bit.”

    Kat,

I find it interesting that Ben is busy promoting Carl Kilo’s observations about Roscoe Reynolds and bringing such publicity to Roscoe’s decision to use these guys, who probably are pretty radioactive in that district. The more Ben promotes this, the worse it is for Old Roscoe and his traveling circus of inanity. From a strategic point, this isn’t helping southside Dems at all. I wonder if there’s any way we can get Ben to talk more about this, and have folks in Henry County read more of it. Jeff Evans could get no better publicity, I imagine.

As for the breach of security with the ODBA list, I don’t think this is a case of Ben actually getting the access he claims he has. If he guessed a password or something, he might be reading the list, but more likely someone forwarded him an email or something. If Ben was posting full email chains, I’d be more concerned.

Bats, to clarify, this race does have a nexus between politics and the immigration issue. The challenger, Jeff Evans, is a retired State Police officer who lists as his five campaign promises:

    * I will work to create the coalitions in Richmond necessary to fully fund and complete highway 58.
    * I will work to keep Virginia a low tax state.
    * I will work to combat our illegal immigration problem.
    * I will work to promote and support the moral values held by us in the 20th District.
    * And last, but certainly not least, I will be available.

He then goes on to discuss the issue in detail:

    Illegal Immigration

    ——————————————————————————–

While we wait in vain for Congress to act on illegal immigration, we are forced to do what we can to address the issue on the state level. The primary responsibility for immigration rests with the federal government, but there are things we can do in Virginia to help address this problem.

First, we should require the governor to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) that will allow state and local law-enforcement agencies to enforce civil immigration laws. This would enable our state and local police to arrest and detain illegals when they encounter them, rather than releasing them.

We must stop providing illegals in Virginia the benefits of citizenship. We have already acted to take most of these benefits away, but we still allow the children of illegal immigrants living in Virginia to pay in-state tuition at our colleges and universities. My opponent approves of rewarding illegals with in-state tuition; I do not.

And finally, we can pass our own laws holding Virginia employers accountable for knowingly hiring illegal workers or knowingly failing to confirm their immigration status prior to hiring them.

Illegal immigration is a complex issue, I know that. But it is not as complex as the politicians in Washington want to make it appear. You and I support legal immigration. You and I oppose illegal immigration. And if Congress cannot understand that, we need some new leaders in Washington.

Greg is doing a great job on the immigration issue and partisan politics in this regard. While many other blogs do maintain more partisan edges to them, they are issue based reasons and this is a major one.

Thanks, Riley: …what will surprise you is this comment from Ben: A lot of the conservative blogs are members of a group called the “Old Dominion Blog Alliance” [ODBA]. I usually just sit back and read the emails from that list with amusement… Wh…

O’Reilly, thanks for taking the trouble to post your additional information.

The interviews with experts who found Webb’s cartoon anti-Semitic were convincing. My own view was that:

    (1) Lots of Jews, and non-Jews also, have long noses. A caricature of such a person might show that person with an even longer nose. I do not view such a caricature as necessarily anti-Semitic whenever the subject of the caricature is Jewish.

    (2) “antichrist of outsourcing” was an alliterative reference. (In Old English poetry all vowels alliterated.) I don’t view references to the antichrist as anti-Semitic either. I am aware that some Christians say that the antichrist will be a Jew, but some say that the antichrist will be an anti-Semite who hates the Jews.

    (3) A common complaint about Harris Miller, and one reason I attacked him vehemently when he ran, is that he was a lobbyist for people who seek to increase the number of H-1B visas, harming my profession immensely. Complaints about lobbyists often involve money. Faisal Gill is also lobbyist, and my complaints about him sometimes involve money.

That was my view previously. I sort of hold it now. I can see how someone would say that regardless of its intent the Webb flyer unintentionally crossed the line, so I will no longer disagree if someone calls the flyer anti-Semitic.
