Roscoe Reynolds Steps In It

By Greg L | 25 August 2007 | Virginia Politics, Blogs | 10 Comments

Down in Southwest Virginia, there’s an old, long-time Senator named Roscoe Reynolds (D-20th) who has embarrassed folks in the district for far too long. He’s got a Republican challenger this year by the name of Jeff Evans, and although the conventional wisdom has previously been that old Roscoe is likely going to win again, he brought on Yellow Dog Strategy, headed by Joe Stanley, of Perseverando fame, which has done some magnificent photo-shopping to poke fun at candidates in the past. I’ve always thought Joe was a stand-up guy, even though we were on different sides of the political aisle, and his personal story about how he’s raising his niece is really compelling story which demonstrates that regardless of political convictions, there really are good people everywhere. Sometimes, even these good people do something terrifically stupid.

When we get into this political gladiator ring, sometimes things run amok. After some withering criticism of Joe’s client Roscoe Reynolds by members of the Old Dominion Blog Alliance (ODBA), a largely informal association of political blogs in Virginia which lean to varying degrees to the right of the center of the aisle, Joe decided to use his considerable creativity in a decidedly unwise way, by reserving some domain names for the ODBA and pointing them to the National Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA). His little coup got passed on to Not Larry Sabato, which ensured this got wide visibility, and the conservative blogosphere has pretty much erupted in outrage.

A little prank is one thing, but linking a bunch of conservatives, many with strong Christian beliefs, with an organization that promotes homosexual pedophilia is just way beyond the pale. Now the heat is falling on Stanley’s client Roscoe Reynolds, who is trying to distance himself quietly from his involvement in this, but really needs to explain to the voters the degree to which he was involved in this. The sequence of events really makes this look like Roscoe Reynold’s attempt to fire back at his critics, using a false association with NAMBLA as his political weapon of choice, something I am certain Southside voters would find deeply disturbing.

In response, this press release was issued this morning, and it’s possible that the mainstream media will be able to get answers to these questions that Roscoe has so far neglected to answer when posed by his critics:

Live By “Macaca,” Die By “NAMBLA”

Top Virginia Democratic Strategist Linked To Pedophile Web Site

Richmond, Virginia. (August 25, 2007) – The Old Dominion Blog Alliance (“ODBA”), an organization of approximately 25 conservative Virginia bloggers founded on December 9, 2005, discovered on August 21 that someone registered the domain name of “olddominionblogalliance.com” on August 16 via GoDaddy.com’s Domains by Proxy service in order to conceal their identity. The domain was then set to forward to the web site for the North American Man-Boy Love Association (”NAMBLA”), an organization that promotes illegal activity between adults and children, including pedophilia.

Following this disclosure, the parties behind it were subsequently discovered to be Joe Stanley of Yellow Dog Strategy, a Democratic consultant who manufactured last year’s “macaca” gaffe by U.S. Sen. George Allen into an ex post factocontroversial anti-Harris Miller mailing, and Ben Tribbett who runs the Northern Virginian blog “Not Larry Sabato.”

Evidence in hand and a confession by Mr. Stanley show that he was the one who purchased the domain name and then set it to forward to the NAMBLA web site. Mr. Tribbett, who is close to Mr. Stanley, proceeded to peddle the story to another blog and then feigned outrage at this action apparently in order to further raise the story’s visibility while maintaining deniability over it. Mr. Stanley undertook this action just two days after members of the ODBA began a concerted effort against state Sen. Roscoe Reynolds (D-20th Dist.), a candidate for whom Mr. Stanley has done work and who is locked in a tight reelection battle with Republican Jeff Evans. Sen. Reynolds advertises on “Not Larry Sabato.”

“Child sexual abuse is not a joke and certainly not a political tactic to be used in order to silence your political enemies,” said Kathryn Wilton of the blog CatHouse Chat, a member of the ODBA, the wife of a Navy veteran and mother. “Pedophilia is a morally repugnant behavior and how Mr. Stanley or Mr. Tribbett could think this is humorous or fair game politically is beyond my comprehension.”

“Senator Reynolds needs to go on the record whether or not he agrees with these abhorrent tactics used on his behalf,” added Greg Letiecq of Black Velvet Bruce Li, one of the most widely read blogs in Virginia. “Joe Stanley did this to benefit him. Reynolds must either expressly condone or renounce these tactics used for his gain.”

Members of the ODBA are currently considering whether to bring any civil legal claims stemming from this defamatory act perpetrated upon them. Should a case be brought and damages awarded, any proceeds will be donated to organizations that fight child abuse.

For more on this, there’s some excellent coverage at J’s Notes, Virtucon, Cathouse Chat, and The Ward View.

Roscoe, you got some explainin’ to do.

UPDATE: I’m hearing that Roscoe is losing campaign contributions as a result of this scandal.  He should.  Who wants to finance this sort of behavior by contributing to Roscoe Reynolds, when he’s going to use it to raise NAMBLA’s profile?

Can anybody report any good info on tracking polls or anything on this race? Is it really close? Martinsville is a tough area. If this race is truly in play we need to help Evans….everyone. In ‘07 every seat counts (especially the Senate).

Before this happened, Roscoe looked like he would win pretty easily. Now, I think all bets are off, especially if this makes the press.

If you’re in PWC, there are a lot of important races that need your attention. Jay O’Brien and Jackson Miller, closer to home, really need your support and are in tough races we really need to win.

I think support of Jay O’Brien is probably more critical for our efforts in the Senate than trying to make the Jeff Evans/Roscoe Reynolds race competitive. The southside folks can make that happen, meanwhile we have to take care of our own house.

If you’ve already supported Jackson and Jay, I’m sure Jeff Evans will appreciate some support, though.

Roscoe has been hurt every time he gets into the public and Evans shines.

You do know that there is no way NLS will pick the Reynolds/Evans race as one of his top 12 which easily shows his partisanship.

Evans is easily outworking Reynolds and this is a GOP district. Evans has gotten some good help from outside and recent polling will mean more, Your donations could easily be the difference to move this seat to the GOP column. Evans is a rock solid conservative and Reynolds is a long term flip flopper who has done nothing for his district. Reynolds has brought in a number of operatives but has weak support otherwise on the ground. Evans has a hard working Alton Foley helping him and he by far the class operative in this race.

Look for Martinsville/Henry county voting to be much lower than expected and the western part of thedistrict to come home for an Evans win by a close margin.

The ridiculous part of this is the “link” to Roscoe Reynolds. The claims Joe did this in response to the videos posted on Roscoe are ridiculous. I would encourage anyone who thinks that to visit the three videos on you tube and click on the “links” button right below the video. NOT A SINGLE ODBA BLOG THAT LINKED TO ONE OF THOSE VIDEOS GOT EVEN TEN PEOPLE TO CLICK AND WATCH. I repeat- not a single site got TEN people to watch the video. Trying to link this to the “amazing attack” on Roscoe as some blogs are…. is just stupid.

Maybe it’s Roscoe’s panic over the videos then, (as well as your part in all this, Ben) that is so stupid.

Less than TEN people viewed them from any one ODBA site… for Roscoe to even know they existed he would have to be one of the six or seven readers of these various blogs. That you continue to think he has even seen them is HYSTERICAL.

I never said his panicking required his having seen them. I think all it would take is one particular reader (and possible defamer; anyone you know, Ben?) of ODBA sites to get Roscoe to panic.

NLS: Over five hundred combined views on the videos in two weeks isn’t something to scoff at, especially when they’re relevant to mainly a single district in the state. Also, not every site posted every video. The message is out there and growing, whether it comes from YouTube videos or word of mouth, and that Joe Stanley turned to you and promoting the raping of little boys says a lot about the concern both of you have with the ODBA’s tactics and effectiveness not just in the Reynolds race but potentially statewide.

This is a race to watch, whether you want to or not. And this whole thing is an issue that could impact November.

OK, Ben, let’s do this your way. Let’s just say that the videos had nothing to do with it. Let’s just say that they got only 10 viewers per blog who linked. Yeah, so there were so few people linking from the conservative Virginia blogs? Well guess what. We have here one of the most well-read blogs here in Virginia on which you decide to say all this, you get my drift? I sure hope a bunch of elected officials and candidates for office (especially those whom you enjoy dragging through the mud) are reading this.

You realize that your (all-knowing) answers are doing? YOU ARE DRAWING ATTENTION TO YOURSELF!!!

So tell us, then, why was it, then, that Drama Queen Joe, Chairman of the Franklin County (not even in Roscoe’s district) Democrats, obtained the domain name and linked it to a group of pedophiles.

Tell us why a bunch of nice, decent people were subjected to such defamation of their character.

Tell us why Ben Tribbett of ***** Virginia gets notified of this and involved enough to smear egg all over the face of another Democratic-leaning blogger?

Tell us if there was any financial consideration between Ben Tribbett and Joe Stanley.

Tell us why you have to engage in ugly race-baiting of ODBA members to divert attention from your activities.

Tell us why you find all this so amusing.

Listen, Benjamin Alex Tribbett, there are a couple of dozen nice people out there who are REALLY ANGRY right now, particularly at you. So maybe it’s time for you to ‘FESS UP and tell us the truth for a change.

I’ve got my own ideas, and believe me, if you get me to express them, you will miss the sarcastic Ron you have grown to know and love.

So as a famous expression from the 1960s might go, THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING!

Anon 628- Kids making fart noises on you tube get 500 views over 3 videos. That’s people on youtube doing random searches and ending up on that video by accident. The way to tell how much real traffic is going there is from the links- and there if you assume all the traffic is around Virginia (it wasn’t blogs in Roscoe’s district linking) and divide by the 40 Senate districts- the amount of traffic ODBA drove there got 2 people in Roscoe’s district to see the video.
