Fallout in Southside

By Greg L | 28 August 2007 | Virginia Politics, Blogs | 10 Comments

The battle between the ODBA and Joe Stanley, the Chairman of the Franklin County Democratic Committee and political consultant to Roscoe Reynolds and several other Democrats is continuing to boil, and about now we can start identifying the political casualties that are likely to result.  I’ve noted before that in my few previous interactions with Joe, I’ve liked him quite a bit.  His recent smearing an organization I belong to along the lines of “While the end product is far less repugnant than pedophilia, no fewer individuals are hurt by the [ODBA]” compels me to jump into this fray a little more, and take a far more personal interest in slapping down this despicable example of how far the Democrats have sunk from the ideals they have supposedly been dedicated to, such as slavery and Jim Crow.

You see, Mr. Stanley is one of those colorful individuals who consistently displays an odd sort of creativity.  Sometimes he makes artful photoshops that make us laugh.  Other times, he thinks it’s cute to hack into the payroll database of his employer and disclose employee compensation data, trying to embarrass folks.  And then sometimes, he decides it’s a great idea to create a false link between his political opponents and an organization that promotes raping little boys, just for a laugh, and defend his atrocious behavior by saying that while they’re not quite as repugnant as these child molesters, they harm just as many people.   How cute.  And Democrats actually hire this guy, and in so doing endorse this sort of behavior.

That cuteness is not going to be received with the same jovial attitude it might receive within the far-left bastions of Northern Virginia politics, when it’s considered down in Southside Virginia.  You mention NAMBLA there, and it gets you the same reaction as you might expect to obtain by mentioning the Aryan Nation in Alexandria.  As a result, stories about Roscoe Reynolds that might never have gotten much attention are now starting to get some interest.  Roscoe has had to add to his campaign staff to fend off an unexpected and growing challenge from Jeff Evans, and Joe Stanley’s other clients are reportedly getting concerned that their association with Stanley’s Yellow Dog Strategy may put them in serious jeopardy this election.

Southside politics generally move at a pretty glacial pace. Incumbents there are among the safest in the state, and it’s one of the few places in the state where long-term incumbent Democrats can safely represent Republican Districts.  That dynamic could be changing as Jim Webb style political strategies start to infect this region, and this conservative electorate reacts to a strategy that was developed with a more liberal Northern Virginia in mind.  Democrats are already mighty uncomfortable about their disconnect with the voters on immigration policy in Virginia, but to add a scandal like this starts to bring whole regions into play in the 2007 elections for Republicans in which they might never have otherwise been competitive.

The strategy this year for Democrats was to pretty much hold everywhere, and attack in Northern Virginia.  If they get thrown on the defensive in Southside because of Joe Stanley’s stupid, indefensible and outrageous idiocy, and challenged in other areas in the state on their immigration policy, Democrats plans to retake the Senate are utterly doomed.  If this is the sort of thing that Democrats think is cute, those plans should be doomed.

Live by “macacca”, die by NAMBLA.

The Joe Stanley response to this controversy up at NLS is audacious in its audacity. I can’t believe Ben would fall for that bunch of crap so easily. Doing anything at all to promote or bring further recognition to something as vile as NAMBLA is far far worse than any of the overblown examples he uses in his defense. Despicable.

Wow that comment pissed me off. Despicable, eh? For someone who is ANONYMOUS and DELETES every comment of people guessing their identity (I for one have known for months who you are even though we have never met)….. but for someone who is ANONYMOUS and gets upset when people stalk you- to not understand the problem with the ODBA stalking Joe for the past year and harassing his employers, family and others for cheap political points…. that puts you into the despicably hypocritical category LI.

” how far the Democrats have sunk from the ideals they have supposedly been dedicated to, such as slavery and Jim Crow”

Oh, please, don’t go there Greg.

The idea that you would say that anyone who identifies as a Democrat supports slavery and racial discrimination is stupid.

If your argument is valid, then anyone who is a Christian supports torturing and killing non-believers because that is what they did in the Middle Ages.

Romans 1:22: “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” is something that applies to you in this situation.

Joey’s attack on the ODBA is just nasty. Tribbett is/was totally involved and knew in advance what the link was. No wonder he defends Joey. I don’t believe that the Franklin County Democrats know that Joey is doing this and I think they would throw him out if they did. He talks about “Old Timey Politics” and there is no way old time Democrats would allow the Chairman of their party to promote NAMBLA.

Joey needs to go into hiding which is what he really is doing since he won’t return calls from the Roanoke Paper we hear. Wahat will DirtJoey do when Tim Kaine comes to town this weekend ?

There’s a little problem with the logic behind “live by maccaca, die by nambla.” Maccaca was a word that came out of the mouth of the candidate himself. Nambla is a link that came from a consultant.

Then there’s the fact that Maccaca came with video and Nambla comes with NLS and Whackjob posts.

Anyone who thinks this is going to have serious consequences for Dems is kidding themselves.

    Dave Mastio,

Interesting theory, but doesn’t hold up. Campaigns are often damaged by the actions of those working on the politician’s behalf. On such occasions, the savvy candidate will immdiately apologize and fire the worker or distance himself from his associate. Those who remain silient or try to defend such outrageous conduct usually end up plummeting in the polls.

Joe Stanley the party chairman and a consultant to several democratic candiates. He is not a lone hack pushing his own agenda. He was elected to a position of power by the Democrats and works for them in an official capacity. This makes him a part of Roscoe Reynolds campaign. Stanley’s actions reflect on the candidate, and Reynolds should be working hard to repair the damage. So far, he hasn’t.

Dave Mastio is assuming the media won’t cover this. And it won’t, but the bloggers will. The story will get out.

    JM,

I agree with everything you said, but the question is how much damage? Enough to make a difference in the election?

I doubt it. Voters vote the candidate, not his minions. That may be unfair because who a candidate chooses as his minions clearly relects on the character of the candidate, but my experience is that staff scandals rarely amount to much, even if the candidate stands by the embattled minion.

Here are interesting facts about Joe’s screed on Ben’s site:

    Ben’s initials are B.A.T.

THe posting occurred on or about the lunar eclipse.

Therefore, the post was almost literally FULL MOON-B.A.T.!!!

    LOL
