MS-13 Offshoot In Manassas

By Greg L | 3 September 2007 | Crime | 35 Comments

Not only do we apparently have MS-13 running around Prince William County, but an offshoot called SUR-13 is active as well.  This is a picture of a telephone pole at the corner of Powhattan and King George in Prince William County, just outside of Manassas.   This graffiti is apparently the trademark for this gang, and while most of us might not understand what it is, or it’s significance, the gangs certainly do.

This is a territory marker.  If it is allowed to remain, it will encourage these SUR-13 guys to step up their efforts to control this territory and engage in ever increasing activity in the area.  If you want to nip gang activity in the bud, this kind of graffiti needs to be stopped as quickly as possible.

If you see these anywhere else, please contact your local police department.

I sure wish I could say I was surprised. However, I’m not. This can NOT be tolerated on any level. I hope this graffiti gets removed ASAP. The longer it’s out there for all to see it may encourage more of this type of behavior, and lead these jokers into thinking this acceptable. Well, I’ll tell you it is NOT, and certainly not anywhere in PWC!! I believe all have seen the things we speak of around here in WestGate/Sudley, this is first that I’ve seen. I hope it’s the last time too!! I would also, like to add watch for this on the back of street signs. This is another place they will tag.
WE MUST REPORT THIS TYPE OF ACTIVITY TO THE POLICE!!!
    PWC- 703-792-6500
    City of Manassas- 703-257-8000
    Manassas Park- 703-367-1136
These are all Non-Emergency numbers. Please, keep them handy.
I would like to add, a good portion of the walking students to Stonewall Middle will see this on their way to school tomorrow.
BTW- School is open. Please, watch out for the children. We have many walking schools in the county, and the two cities.

Did you see the word ‘WAR” on the stop sign at Copeland?

Although not universally true, SUR is typically not related to MS-13. The Surenos are typically of Mexican influence where MS are related to central Americans.

I’ve had a number of conversations with members of the regional gang task force, and the one thought that sticks with me is that when I was in the Fairfax school system you could supposedly count the Fairfax schools with violent gangs on one hand. According to the task force members, you can now count the ones who don’t on that same hand. That includes elementary schools.

The sphere of influence of these heartless criminals is scary. It’s not the same as the illegal alien problems, but the overlap is also too big to ignore.

Lafayette is 100% correct, all residents need to report any and all graffiti activity to the respective numbers Lafayette posted. I keep the PWC county non-emergency # in my cell phone and phone this type of stuff in immediately. Insist it be removed at once too, and the county at least does usually respond right away.

Concerned citizens should also consider getting training for a concealed weapons permit.

A self defense course is also beneficial.

There is also, the Citizen’s Police Academy in PWC. It’s a nine week program, meets one night per week. For more information call the Criminal Justice Aceademy@ 703-792-6599.

While it does not diminish the hazard and threat they pose in our community (and may, in fact, make matters worse), SUR-13 is not an “offshoot” of MS-13. As siebenundsiebzig posted above, MS-13 has Salvadoran roots while SUR-13 has roots in the Mexican immigrant community in Southern California. The SUR stands for “Surenos” or Southern. The 13 refers to the thirteenth letter of the alphabet–M–in homage to their roots in the Mexican gang La eMe (aka the Mexican Mafia). Mexican Mafia gangs (including SUR-13) in Southern California have a history of being anti-black and have hired members of the Aryan Brotherhood to carry out assassinations of black gang leaders.

Who offers firearm safety training/courses in PWC?

The NRA in Fairfax offers the course. Shooter’s Paradise did until the fire put them out of business.

I’ll try to find some others that offer the course.

I got my Concealed carry permit at shooters a couple years back and I’m glad I did…it really makes me feel comfortable when I head over to the other side of 95 around hwy-1 near little Juarez. My wife ended up getting one too.

The NRA range has some good instructors. If you go to shootersparadise.com and check out the forums you can get ahold of alot of instructors on there. The online boards are still active.

I thought that SUR-13 was only a prison gang in CA, when did they come here to NOVA?

I reported the graffiti and was told by PWC that they are a subgroup of MS13. We definitely have a problem in the neighborhood. Please if you see anything on a pole or sign please call the police. What may look insignificant to us could be very significant to others.

I’m at Potomac Mills Mall over the weekend. Someone from mall security had his radio up pretty loudly. I hear someone say “MS-13 Gang members are in here, I recognize them from a prior incident.”

My friend, a diabetic is taken to the emergency room by ambulance to Potomac Hospital, it’s a Sunday at 7:00 p.m., the waiting area is completely full, almost everyone is speaking spanish. Groups of of hispanics gathered outside the doors smoking cigarettes. Hospital emergency rooms are not intended to be health care clinic’s for the poor.

Prince William students SAT scores rated BELOW the National average. In the last 5 years we’ve gone from one of the best school systems to one of the worst. Non-speaking immigrant aliens have increased steadily over the last 5 years.

I’ve had enough. Build the borders, arrest all the illegals and put them on a plane back to wherever they came from. 40 a month..while 80 new ones arrive, isn’t good enough. I’m fed up. Public safety, schools and hospitals are for Americans, and not meant to be a “free ride” for illegals. Illegal is Illegal. Go home, you’re not wanted here!

If it takes a Revolution, then bring it on…..lets roll.

You are exactly right here. I just read in the Journal Mess, 72,000 students in PWC, second largest only to Fairfax of course. I sure would like to know of those 72,000 students, how many students are illegal. How many of them are “anchor babies” and how many of their parents are here illegally.
    All
The graffiti has been removed from the pole. Thanks, to the MANY parties who took part in this swift action. Patty, showed the picture at 2pm citizens time, and several of us spoke about it. I went back at 7:30, and let the PWCBOS to report graffiti is now gone, and several other concerns, and of course thank them for the resolution. I don’t want this kind stuff anywhere, and certainly not in my native neighborhood where my child walks to school.
Please report this sorts of findings to the police. We must send a strong message that we will NOT tolerate any criminal activity in our community and county.

I think they both went very well. A handful of people crying about the resolution, about 10 in support, and thanking the the PWCBOS, extended their support. That was at 2pm.
Then at 7:30, about 10 of us spoke, most in favor, a couple complaints here and their about resolution. Nothing really to talk about. Of course, I expressed my sincere thanks, and reminded them that we are the legal citizens, that go to polls and elect them, and thanks for represting us, the deserving. Don’t remember exact words.I also told them the KKK is NOT WELCOME IN OUR COMMUNITY!!!!! I think you have the idea though.
BTW-The PWCBOS meetings are available online to listen to. You, can also check out a copy from the Library on Mathis Ave. These are both great ways to spread the word to those that don’t have cable, and live outside of PWC. I think we should be able to watch all 3 jurisdictions on the cable. Afterall, the two cities are in the county, and they both use our courts and jail.

Please contact Greg L, ask him to give you my email and home phone number. We need to talk, and I look forward to speaking with you. I’m always happy to spread the word here. However, I think we both know from Beth(?), we are on the exact same page. Trying to get a neighborhood meeting together, and would certainly welcome residents from both cities.

Greg, might be a good idea to have a page with acronyms and definitions - a short write up of the various groups that are out there (i.e. “SUR-13 = an offshoot of…”) that way for any newcomers to this website, they will know what we are talking about.

Good idea. Seems to me the PWPD, would have preventive info like this available to educate the public. I’m pretty sure they don’t though. Surprised?-I didn’t think so.

I had a similar issue, my daughter was extremely ill. She went to potomac hospital and got triaged behind a group of illegals looking for health care. The hospital didnt help, they converted her temperature incorrectly and left her to lay out in the waiting room forever.

After contacting Fort Belvoir admitted her however immediately since she was so ill and she ended up staying overnight.

the point is (regardless of potomac hospital being unable to do simple math) is that if the illegals had not been there we would have been able to see a doctor right away.

Lafayette: Thank you. You MAY be right, but what MIGHT ALSO be good is if we create a tri-fold to hand out at the HSM meetings to better educate the members/community at large. It could include brief bio of gangs, names of key “players”, and telephone numbers for the various agencies who are SUPPOSED to be protecting us, not to mention e-mail addresses and phone numbers of elected officials.

One gentleman spoke at 2pm yesterday, told of twelve “visitors” at PW Hospital and I’m sure some were illegal. He spoke of a dozen visitors in the room until 11pm, and some still stayed til 3am. I can’t imagine this is while trying to get well. I remember being in the PWH, at about age 6, they sure ran my parents out of there each and every night promptly at 8pm. I guess the Hospitals don’t want to upset their “free patients”.

Another recent incident of gang graffiti, this one in my former neighborhood. From the Manassas Park Police press release:

    Date of Release: 090407

Type of Offense: Destruction of Property

    Dates of Occurrence: 090207 1144

    Location: 300 Block Moseby Court

    Vehicles Involved:

    Suspects:

    Arrests:

Gang graffiti in black marker written on NOVEC green electrical box. Damage: $50

Frankly, I am shocked that MPPD admitted that this occured at all. It has been the official position of MP that there are no problems associated with illegal aliens or gangs.

I would contact the Prince William County Schools for gang info. They will speak at community functions last time I was at one of their talks.

The worst they can tell you is no.

I used to shoot at Shooter’s Paradise regularly until the fire as well.

If you wish CCW training before they re-open (assuming they ever do), then you probably should go ask at Blue Ridge Arsenal near the rt 28/50 interchange. They hold classes monthly.

Normally, I would recommend Shooter’s Paradise, but alas…

We had a townhouse in my neighborhood in Sudley Manor hit about a year ago with graffitti including MS-13 signage, done in paint, all over the brick on an end unit. It took weeks of hard work to get it cleaned off. About two or three years ago, I also saw MS-13 graffiti done on wooden privacy fences as well. I’m really grateful more and more good people in Manassas are speaking up and fighting back!

I too am grateful that more people are getting involved. I think the number of folks becoming active is on the steady rise, with each any every passing day. This is how change will happen. It’s really not that hard to pick up the phone and call to report instances. And for those of you out there that might not want to call or report things. Contact HSM, we will HELP!!!!!!!!
Things are looking better with each passing day.
