Ron Paul is the best choice (IMO). He really is a constitutionalist and has a proven record. He doesnt just promise tax cuts, he promises to drastically reduce federal spending. How many other republican candidates have given specific information on cutting the federal budget?

He is humble and a true gentleman. He will defend our nation from terrorists, but in a different way than we have become accustomed too.

He is also for enforcing our borders and does not want to reward those here illegally with citizenship or any other form of amnest.

Hes a refreshing change to the face of politics that we are used too. I suggest watching a few of his speeches, its the best way to learn about him and understand his ideas.

Fred Thompson isn't a conservative. He isn't a federalist. He isn't a states-rights guy. He isn't the Washington "outsider" he claims to be. Fred Thompson's entire political biography paints him as a self-serving corporate shill (including his work for Westinghouse Electric, General Electric, and the Tennessee Savings and Loan League--you remember this last one, they brought us the S&L debacle). What did he do before entering the Senate? He was a lobbyist for General Electric. What did he do while in the Senate? Voted for bills that benefitted General Electric. What did he do when he left the Senate? Went to work as an actor on an NBC drama. Who owns NBC? Let's see...oh yeah...General Electric. Thompson has literally lived inside the Beltway for more than 20 years (heck, he was a registered lobbyist for over 18 years). Of course, there was also that stint he had as a lobbyist for the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Assn when he lobbied the G. H. W. Bush adminstration to relax the "gag rule" on Federally funded clinics. He was minority counsel during Watergate for heaven's sake and he's never really left. The little red pickup doesn't sit in front of his house in Tennesee--it sits in his mother's driveway.

I will give Fred Thompson credit. He has been able to spin a whole personal history that, on the surface, seems to be the portrait of the "everyman" President. It's only when you scratch the surface that you realize it's no more true than the character he plays on Law and Order.

No doubt a small government is a strong Republican goal. That is why, with a Republican Congress and President from 2001 to 2007, the Republicans slashed domestic spending, rejected an education bill that would impose academic performance standards on states, made sure that another entitled in the form a prescription drug benefit did not pass, and cut back Medicare and Social Security. Because of these tough choices, both taxes and the deficit have gone down. Whoops, that didn't happen. Keep that in mind next time a Republican tells you they are in favor of smaller government.

Fred is a Federalist he will use the Constitution to guide his decisions, He will protect the 2nd Ammendment, his stance on illegal aliens, secure the border and then deal with the 12 million here , first we have to stop the flood. I like Tancredo but he does not have the following, would be a great replacement for Micheal Jerkoff though. If you want to see what Fred stands for, as I have for the last six months go to the sites and lurk then make your decision.

I was in England for the summer. The only news about America I received was that "Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo threatened to nuke Mecca and Medine if there is another terrorist attack in America." I'd rather have Larry Craig in the GOP than Tom Tancredo.

Fred is a dud. It is funny how he has spun himself as the 'real conservative' in the race because when he retired from the Senate he was likened as a maverick akin to John McCain. Rudy's quip that Thompson acted his (Rudy's) part well on "Law & Order" is true.

I'm open to considering Fred. He appears better than most of the lot, Republican or Democrat. However, if the primary were held today I'd still vote for Tom Tancredo.

Tom was interviewed a few weeks ago about Fred’s possibly entering the race. Tom said that if he were convinced that Fred was serious about dealing with the illegal alien problem, he would consider withdrawing and endorsing Fred. If Tom Tancredo endorses Fred Thompson, I would almost certainly support him.

I want also to hear Fred come out against corporatism. That means the Clinton/Bush model of supporting whatever the corporations want to do including outsourcing, expanding HB1 visas, open borders, relocating production outside the US, giving Mexican truck drivers free rein on our highways as Bush did this week, etc. Our middle class is dying and if this great nation stays on the track it’s on, we’ll soon be a third world slum with only a small, rich elite and a massive underclass. We need someone who will change that.

Why Tancredo when he has little chance of winning the election? I’m a life-long Republican who supported Bush twice and now feels betrayed. From now on I’m voting conscience even if that means voting for an independent in the 2008 general election. That way, if we get another Clinton or Bush, I won’t feel that I’m part of the problem.

Parker:

A strong national defense is very cheap indeed compared to the social entitlement programs administered by other departments. And when you consider the intangible dividends of a strong defense, it's a downright bargain. By providing the means for young people to escape the economic stratum into which they were born, a strong defense is even more effective than entitlement programs at lifting boats. I'm living proof of that, trust me.

Fred's got the best looking wife, if that sways anyone. It's as valid a criterion as anything I've heard yet.

Craig,
Little do you know....
Grassfire just released to the national media the results
of last week‚s Straw Poll, which thousands of Grassfire
team members took part in. To our knowledge, this is the
largest national scientific survey of grassroots conservatives
in the nation, with over 39,000 people participating.

The results were fascinating:

--On the very eve of Fred Thompson announcement, Thompson
has increased his lead among grassroots conservatives
and now holds a 2-to-1 margin over his nearest competitor,

NOW, lets see if he's used up his "buzz", now that he is really in the race. STAND BY for some high heels (Hillary) shakin!

Anonymous, amen to that.

Seriously, Fred Thompson guys? His campaign was over before it started. He used up all of his buzz before he even announced. And then there is an entirely less than impressive career as a Senator. What did he actually do other than show up and vote?

Legal2, Thompson is a federalist, so some of his votes on tort reform rubbed conservatives the wrong way. In general Thompson was more likely to vote against things than most senators, just because he didn't think a lot of things were matters for the federal government. So at least the issues where he was inconsistently conservative, he was, well, consistently conservative. I can admire that.

"smaller government, low taxes and a strong national defense"

How does that work? It's seems totally contradictory to me right now.
A strong national defense is very very expensive. We have to have defenses against nations, terrorism, disasters, epidemic, viruses and many other things. But I guess that's what people want to hear, that we can have it all.

Do we know if the questionable senate votes were part of larger bills for which he might have had good reason to vote the way he did?
