Yard Sign Shenanigans Already Starting

By Greg L | 13 September 2007 | Crime | 81 Comments

Now that candidates have their yard signs popping up all over, the shenanigan season is getting into full swing as irresponsible activists start to destroy or deface signs of candidates they don’t support.  The current hotbed of this activity seems to be in Fairfax County at this point, where folks have been seeing Ken Cuccinelli’s signs on Centerville Road getting knocked down by persons described as Hispanic in appearance as they were walking home from work.  Not surprisingly, all of Oleszek’s signs were left alone.  I’d hope that Janet’s campaign will get the word out to their supporters that this behavior is unacceptable.

Last season there was plenty of this by activists on both sides.  The Manassas GOP Headquarters was trashed in one incident, it’s signs damaged in another incident, and in another a banner opposing the marriage amendment at the BRUU was stolen.  Another incident in Manassas Park resulted in hundreds of signs being destroyed.  A significant portion of Jackson Miller’s yard signs were stolen or destroyed last year.  I’ve no tolerance for this, by anyone, for any purpose.

Should this really ramp up like it did last year, I’ve got a message for the criminals out there intent on destroying property in order to advance a political agenda: don’t be surprised if some of the locations where these signs are placed will be under surveillance this year.  Start destroying property, and you may well have evidence of your crime turned over to law enforcement so they can prosecute your sorry carcass to the fullest extent of the law.  If it’s going to take making a few people into examples in order to get this under control, so be it.

I travel that part of 28 often, and I have seen signs for both candidates that have appeared to have been tampered with.

I have a neighbor who during the 2004 election cycle took down a bunch of Bush signs(he placed them under his front stoop) that were in the neighborhood on common property. He used the excuse they were not permitted, which I suppose is the case. However, I asked him if he would do the same for Kerry signs, he said no. A bit of selective enforcement on his part.

Of course if we just give them legal status, all the problems would go away… People who defend illegals simply refuse to see any issue with illegals except our “unfair” immigration laws.

    Signs, signs, everywhere there’s signs…

I remember working on the Vic Poillucci as Campaign Manager back in ‘95 and I had put his signs up along Minniville Road. Needless to say, the very next day they were all down and I was told that that is JENKINS terrority. I told them, “So what, I WON’T back down from a fight.” so I put more signs in their place.

What needs to happen is to have EVERY jurisdiction/county on the same sheet of music because what is legal in Fairfax is not in Prince William County. Fairfax can put signs in the median, PW cannot. So, when candidate get volunteers from other parts of Virginia to put signs up, they are placed where it is against local law and then the candidate gets trashed, just like the signs.

Yes, the onus is on the candidate to clue in the Captains who will pass it on to the workers, but we have a lot of clueless candidates out there as well who don’t know all the laws and regulations.

I lost my Miller yard sign last year, but I thought it was due to high winds, since my neighbor’s Halloween display was destroyed during the same wind storm. The plastic sleeve simply blew off the metal frame. Now I wonder. I do live around the corner from the Rishells, after all! I hope Miller has sturdier signs this year.

I then pulled over asked the officers to please check this guy out. School is letting out and West Gate Elem. will be letting out shortly. I told them I saw the license on the cart, but no photo ID around his neck. They went right away and checked him out. I guess he was ok, I saw him a right after and the photo was around the neck. Oh, yes this was one of the first officers that was contacted about the pushcarts. The police actually got rid of these guys pretty quick with lots of calls from citizens. Did the police ever come?

It is immature to damage them selectively. It is however, I doubt, illegal to remove them as they have been placed illegally within the right of ways (they are fine and dandy on private property.

I have no problem with anyone removing these signs from right of ways. PWC and VDOT workers will do it during routine clean ups. Citizens can help out by doing it themselves. Then call the politicians placing the signs illegally and complain about them breaking the law.

I find it an interesting statement, that the only ethnic group you can still poke fun at and get away with is the ethnic group represented in this book. Imagine the outragous response if these images were replaced with any other image or ethnic group reference. This is what is so wrong with American ethnic, racial, gender, religious division lines for arguments, debates, humor and satire. Ultimately it is degrading to someone.

WHEN will we learn that the only way out of this mess is to start regarding people as individuals and not allow them to belong to ethnic, racial, gender and religious divisive groups, and to stop beating them up along those lines, INCLUDING the majority group getting beat up.

    When will they ever learn?

Patriot, I don’t know the answer to your question. I suppose it depends on who is doing the calling and who is being called. I do not disapprove of profiling in many cases so I am not a good person to ask. Check with Jeff Foxworthy. He is the authority.

Perhaps those who were offended by the term redneck would have been happier if the store robber had been called white trash or a thug. That condition is pretty easy to pick out also.

Certainly those white people in Logan County West Virginia who tortured the black woman do not represent me or my race. Their behavior is reprehensible. Same with Timotht McVay. You get my drift here….

I think many other special groups would be far better off if they didn’t automatically throw in with the masses over race or nationality or a miriad of other group commonalities.

  62. Michael said on 13 Sep 2007 at 9:16 pm:

Dolph, I think the point people are trying to make with you is that name calling, especially when associated with a racial, ethnic, gender or religious group is inflammatory, degrading, offensive, and divisive, and we need to replace it with another concept not along those lines if we don’t agree with the behavior of the “individual”. Thinking about individuals is hard. Individuals however, commit crimes, and are thus “illegal”. They should not be associated with a racial, ethnic, gender, religious group or name calling as such. They should be called simply “criminal”. If people on this forum would just think like that, we would not have the polarization and deranged brow beating that goes on between people of one ethnic position, trying to beat up on people of another ethnic position. I see it here all the time and try to stop it so we can make some real progress in the eyes of the public that we are considerate, rational citizens trying to stop the effects of “illegality” on our community. I’m worried about the people in all ethnic, racial, gender, and religious groups who are breaking our laws and hurting us.

Please, please help me and others, all of you to stay this course if we are ever going to get the general public respect, and especially politcal respect from our lawmakers to solve this “illegal” problem and its consequences on our community. I firmly believe Greg and most of those of you who politely argue believe this as well, as do most of the members of HSM. If they do not we will educate them or kick them out. I’m not a member yet, so I have no say in this, but will soon join them.

  63. dolph said on 13 Sep 2007 at 9:44 pm:

  70. Greg L said on 13 Sep 2007 at 11:20 pm:

    John,

Actually Craig is right here. The PWC Code defines the right of way in regards to signage pretty clearly, and mandates an 18 foot separation between signs and a paved surface. Since there are very few places where you can legally post in a right of way and have that required separation, just about all signage in the right of way is likely to be unlawful.

The rules are different in Manassas and Manassas Park, though. The park is a free-for-all.

  71. John Light said on 13 Sep 2007 at 11:27 pm:

    Greg,
Actually, Craig is wrong. He was referring to Fairfax County NOT PWC. The rules are different in the two counties. As I stated elsewhere, I believe there should be a standard throughout the state to alieviate any confusion, but until that time, Craig needs to make sure that he knows the rules for each county. PWC, last time I checked, will NOT let you put signs in the median. Fairfax County, on the otherhand, will.

Maybe we up in Fairfax allow the signs in the median to help the illegals hide and catch a breath as they run across the parkway playing real life frogger!!!

John Light - can you get any lower than that?

I guess you never saw the signs in the border states that they have up. You know the “falling rocks” signs that you see when driving thru the mountain side, well, in places like Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, they have the yellow diamond signs with the sillouettes of families running across the road.

If I wanted to get lower, I would have to start quoting YOU.

I like those signs. They make great kindling and tinder for campfires. :)
