Jim Moran’s Latest Anti-Semetic Rant
By Greg L | 15 September 2007 | US Congress | 27 Comments
Congressman Jim Moran opened his mouth again, said something anti-semetic, and the media is buzzing.
Usually when something is reported as “news”, it has to be “new”. When Moran doesn’t get the “macacca treatment” by the liberal media, maybe then this will qualify as “news”.
Nah, probably not.

Those comments are not anti-semetic. And there’s probably a grain or more of truth to them. Isreal did feed us some of the disinformation used to justify this war. It was in their interest for us to get in there and commit the reckless and unnecessary act of invading Iraq.
For 3.5 years I ran the GoodbyeJim.com website. I dislike Jim Moran as a politician as much as anyone else in his district.
I think that it is impossible to remove Moran from office right now. It is better to focus on keeping similarly problematic individuals from getting elected in the first place. Once someone like Moran has been in office for 18 years it is almost too late to do anything.
If we keep Gill out of the Virginia legislature in 2007, and keep Gill’s backer Corey “I Put Faisal Gill On The Ballot” Stewart out of Congress in 2008, then there will be plenty of time after that to try to whittle away at the massive edifice of Jim Moran’s incumbency.
The last thing we need is two Jim Morans in Congress and an Abdurahman Alamoudi lobbyist in the House of Delegates. We can prevent two of these three unfortunate situations from happening now, and then go after Moran later.
Greg,
I am familiar with AIPAC as I have received many reports over the years from the organization. They are of course a very powerful Pro-Israel lobby and tend to be very hawkish aligning members to the Likud Party which is a more conservative religous group in Israel.
I don’t believe Jim Moran said anything that is anti semitic toward Jews and because there is definitely basis of truth behind his statement. AIPAC tends to be more hawkish in approach. It is only academic to conclude that members of AIPAC wouldnt mind if the U.S. went into Iraq to kick some ass and take some names. It is also true that there are some very wealthy Jewish contributors that donate funds into the organization which is why they are so successful and powerful.
The last qualifying reason I feel this way is because I am Jewish and find it absurd for anyone to misconstrue the meaning of what Mr. Moran was actually saying.
I also know how I feel on this subject since I am Jewish myself.
I think Moran is correct.
No matter what you think about Moran’s latest remarks, there is no denying the fact that he is probably the biggest asshole in Congress. What a travesty that his district continually elects this crooked jerk election after election. It really boggles my mind that he is still in office.
Why would Israel want the US in Iraq creating instability? They had no problem taking out Iraq’s nuclear reactor when they wanted to. Face it, the US is waiting for Israel to take care of Iran so we won’t have to. Unlike a lot of countries like Canada and in Europe, Israel does not feed off our military capabilities.
Come on LI…the Democrats are notorious for that kind of judgement. How ’bout when DC elected Marion Barry mayor while he was under indictment for several felonies? Or how about that Congressman in Philadelphia who was re-elected while he was already sitting in jail?! There are lots of examples of equally good judgement available in Democratic controlled areas around the US, and going back through the years.
I have little time for Jim Moran and can’t understand why his district can’t find someone more capable and less ethically challenged to fill that seat. That having been said, he said nothing “anti-semitic” and there was no “rant.” This was an interview in Tikkun, a Jewish publication. What Moran said was a straightforward contention that is hard to dispute factually. If he had said the same thing in an interview to “The Skinhead Standard” or “Nazi Nation”, you might have been justified in going behind the words to find out what the motivation was. But, as it is, he was straight-talking in a venue where it was bound to cause controversy. Slapping the “anti-semitic rant” banner on this story might give the impression that you tend run inflammatory posts just to be provocative and have little regard for the truth. Since we know that is not the case, I’d cool it with this stuff. The correct header would have been something like “Moran Comments on Israeli Lobby Cause Further Controversy.”
If you listen only to the left and the liberals, the only folks who are capable of spewing racist bigoted views are those on the right. Hmmm.
Look, this is Jim Moran we are talking about. He likes to push the ragged edge of Jew-baiting and then deny that he is in fact a Jew-hater. It’s one thing to criticize the State of Israel, but it’s quite another to do so using statements that are not factual.
If you read the article, you will notice that the National Jewish Democratic Council views Moran’s statements as irresponsible and dangerous. He clearly pushes stereotypes similar to those used by Jew-haters.
Rick Bentley, you will need to provide a little more fact to your statements. Very little about the Iraq liberation is based on misinformation, and certainly it’s difficult, if not impossible, to blame the Israelis. The fact is that Saddam was paying terrorists to blow up people in Israel (including American citizens), and believe me, that’s no disinformation. Saddam bragged about it.
Jonathan Mark, I hope you apply a similar standard to Hillary Clinton that you do to Jim Moran or Faisal Gill.
About Tikkun Magazine: Yes, it is a Jewish publication, but this Rabbi Lerner has written stuff worthy of Louis Farrakhan in the past. He has also wondered why the people with whom he chooses to associate (i.e., in the “antiwar” movement) turn out to be such Jew-haters. Tikkun itself is far left-wing, and people like Lerner tend to make excuses for the Jew-batiers out there. Not unlike certain bloggers I have observed recently, I might add . . .
Isn’t it funny how Moran doesn’t say anything about all the Arab lobbying money? Let’s just say that a double standard is another hallmark of a Jew-hater. Particularly a cowardly one (COUGH*Jim Moran*COUGH) who can’t admit to what he is.
In a way, this is an interesting topic for discussion: What criteria do you use to tell if someone is a Jew-hater if that person does not admit to it?
Moran may be anti-semitic, I can’t see into his heart. But he is saying only the same things that many liberal Jews say and that are said in the recent book “The Israel Lobby” by Walt and Mearsheimer, respected Harvard professors.
Sorry, Robert Hume, Walt and Mearsheimer are frauds. They promote the same left-wing, barely concealed Jew-hating views we tend to see on the political left. Their “scholarship” is pretty sketchy, and they ignore lobbying Arabs countries do. Once again, the double standard. Just because Moran parrots this garbage (by hiding behind Michael Lerner), doesn’t make it respectable.
The term “anti-semite” by the way, was used in Europe to make Jew-hatred seem more genteel. That’s why I try to avoid using the term “anti-semite.”
“”Jonathan Mark, I hope you apply a similar standard to Hillary Clinton that you do to Jim Moran or Faisal Gill.”"
What does that mean?
August 2000: Alamoudi announced that he was a member of Hamas and supported Hezbollah. Hillary and George W. Bush then immediately returned Alamoudi’s campaign donations.
January 2001: Jim Moran defends Alamoudi, receives and accepts a second campaign donation from Alamoudi.
April 2001: Faisal Gill goes to work for Alamoudi’s American Muslim Council as its Director, Government Relations.
March 2002: Moran finally, after repeatedly refusing to do so, returns his donations from Alamoudi.
Both Moran and Gill received money from Alamoudi or from Alamoudi’s American Muslim Council, and they both did so AFTER Alamoudi had already declared himself in public to be a Hamas member.
For this reason Jim Moran and Faisal Gill are much more closely related to Alamoudi than George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton were.
That is the reality. You can dislike Hillary and/or George W. Bush if you wish. But Moran and Gill are far more closely tied to Alamoudi than were Hillary Clinton and George W. Bush.
Jonathan,
Hillary’s involvement with terrorists and their sympathizers goes back much further.
Perhaps, but I am not aware of it. I am aware of Gill and Moran’s involvement with Alamoudi.
She and GWB repudiated Alamoudi immediately in August 2000 after Alamoudi’s Hamas statement. Jim Moran defended Alamoudi for another 18 months afterwards.
Faisal Gill never repudiated Alamoudi, and states that he is proud of having worked for Alamoudi’s AMC.
So I rate them all viz-a-viz Alamoudi as follows:
Acceptable: GWB and Hillary
Unacceptable: Jim Moran
Worst of All: Faisal Gill
If you criticize MSF, then are you a racist? How is criticizing AIPAC anti-semitic? That’s like calling Jonathan Mark a fascist for criticizing Faisal Gill. Or maybe Jonathan is a fascist, and since he fears moderate Muslims like Faisal and Jim Moran, then doesn’t he attack those who he claims are in the same category of himself.
Ugh. I need 3 extra strength Tylenol to deal with this deep layer of hypocrisy.
I criticize Mexicans Without Borders because they’re affiliated with an organization that has engaged in terrorism in the past, seeks to impose socialism, and regularly calls on people to violate federal laws.
It’s not about what they might look like, it’s about what they’ve been documented as doing. But you keep on defending them, my friend. That’ll be interesting to see.
I do not defend MSF/MWB. I do however wish to defend Jim Moran’s right to criticize the policy of a powerful lobby. Again, I fail to see how criticizing AIPAC is anti-semetic? There are many Jewish groups in the US and Israel that criticize them regularly because they fear that the neo-con/Likud axis is BAD for both Israel and the US. Are they anti-semitic? Please elaborate.
“Blaming” the Iraq war on the jewish lobby? That sounds awfully reminiscent of his previous comments where he was blaming jews for other issues.
AIPAC isn’t the vast jewish conspiracy that Jim Moran claims it is.
Again, you fail to answer my question. There isn’t a vast conspiracy - but there is undue influence. How is anyone who criticizes the Israel Lobby ANTI-SEMITIC? I only push, because as other commentors point out - you use the term in your post.
“”"Or maybe Jonathan is a fascist, and since he fears moderate Muslims like Faisal”"”
Faisal is not a moderate, but rather, an employee of extremists like the convicted terrorist Abdurahman Alamoudi. In 2001 Faisal stormed out of the White House to protest that the 20-year-old son of the convicted terrorist Sami Al-Arian had been asked to leave a White House meeting.
cf. “American Muslims Walk Out Of The White House,” http://www.islamonline.net/english/news/2001-06/29/article2.shtml
“”"and Jim Moran,”"”
Jim Moran is not a Moslem at all, and so by definition is not a moderate Moslem either.
“”"then doesn’t he [sic] attack those who he claims are in the same category of himself [sic].”"”
I wonder whether the author of the above is sometime Gill and Gallinger attorney Jad Sarsour. It has the same incorrect use of prepositions as appeared in Sarsour’s letter to BVBL threatening lawsuit.
Furthermore, the meaning of certain sentences is as incomprehensible as that found in Sarsour’s letter to BVBL.
I have no idea what that Sarsour’s (?) final statement means, therefore I cannot respond to it. If I claim that people are “in the same category” as I am, and I believe that I am correct in my thinking, then why does Sarsour believe that I should “attack” such persons?
“”"there is undue influence. “”"
Yes, there is under influence of the imprisoned terrorist (and former Gill client/boss) Abdurahman Alamoudi, former Gill boss Khaled Saffuri, current Gill and Gallinger partner Asim “You Should Rule According To Islam, Otherwise You Are A Kaffir” Ghafoor, Faisal Gill and others.
That is what those of us who oppose Faisal and support Paul Nichols are trying to reduce, the undesirable undue influence of Gill and his colleagues.
Yes, there is undue influence.
Sometimes, a fig leaf isn’t enough protection.
Moran secretly loves AIPAC - it gives him a way to issue comments against Jews, without having to specifically raili against Jews. ‘Oh, I was just referring to AIPAC’ is his cover - so long as you ignore the wink and the nudge he’s giving at the same time.
I’ve wanted to Republicans here - or even the Democrats - to run a serious challenger to Moran. I’d much rather be across the line in District 11.
“How is criticizing AIPAC anti-semitic?”
In and of itself, no, a critique is not necessarily anti-Semitic. However, where someone who *is* an anti-Semite makes the same remark, then the chances are astronomical it is an attack instead of honest criticism.
Jonathan,
Yeah, I think I remember the flap in 2000 about Hillary’s American Muslim Society contributions. First, her campaign tgried to disguise them as American MUSEUM Council. She only returned the money when she got caught.
You should be aware that Hillary met in the White House with lawyers for the 1993 World Trade Center bombers. She also has a track record of funneling “charity” money to Hamas front groups back in the 1980s. She is well-remembered for huggin Yassir Arafat’s wife after the latter made a speech accusing the Israelis of poisoning wells. Her foreign policy think tank is a George Soros-funded organization. Soros, though nominally Jewish, is so bad that he makes Jim Moran look pro-Israeli!
So is Hillary still so acceptable to you?
GSTH and others,
Look, let’s be somewhat constructive here — a lot of Jew-haters don’t admit it in public, right? So think about what criteria you would use to tell the difference between criticism of Israel and a Jew-hater’s use of such tactics to hide behind prejudice. Let me give you a hint: It’s called using falsehoods and double-standards.
Lysander,
Thanks for your comments. You are right — Jim Moran would have to invent AIPAC if it didn’t exist. In a way he has, because the AIPAC image he tries to portray is a false one.
Greg,
I must thank you for inspiring me to post on this subject as well.
“”"Jonathan,
Yeah, I think I remember the flap in 2000 about Hillary’s American Muslim Society contributions.”"”"
Hillary and George W Bush both returned their Alamoudi contributions in August 2000. Moran on the other hand accepted a second Alamoudi contribution in January 2001 and Moran didn’t give his Alamoudi money back until March 2002.
Therefore Moran is worse than Hillary.
“”"First, her campaign tgried to disguise them as American MUSEUM Council. She only returned the money when she got caught.”"”
Caught doing what? Did the American Muslim Council ever give Hillary money? When? Alamoudi gave money personally. I wasn’t aware of the AMC giving Hill money, althought if you say so it might have happened.
“”"You should be aware that Hillary met in the White House with lawyers for the 1993 World Trade Center bombers.”"”
Gill was a lobbyist for the imprisoned Al Qaeda money launderer Abdurahman Alamoudi’s American Muslim Council in 2001. That is worse.
Faisal Gill and Jim Moran are both far worse than Hillary. Don’t vote for Hill if you don’t like her. I probably won’t.
“”"She also has a track record of funneling “charity” money to Hamas front groups back in the 1980s.”"”
This sounds far-fetched.
“”"She is well-remembered for huggin Yassir Arafat’s wife after the latter made a speech accusing the Israelis of poisoning wells.”"”
Essentially true, as I recall. Suha Tawil Arafat is such a low-life crook that even supporters of the Palestinians hate her too. She has millions. Where did she get her fortune? She didn’t earn it, and neither did her late husband.
“”"Her foreign policy think tank is a George Soros-funded organization.”"”
Probably bad, if true, but not as bad as Moran and Gill.
“Soros, though nominally Jewish, is so bad that he makes Jim Moran look pro-Israeli!”
Soros hates Bush, I didn’t know that Soros did or did not dislike Israel. I know that he has about $75 million invested in Israeli companies. He said that he doesn’t give money to Israeli charities because some countries are for charity and some are for investing.
Soros’s $75 mill probably does more for Israel invested than it would as charity. I was not aware at all that Soros was hostile towards Israel. I know he hates Bush II a lot.
“”"So is Hillary still so acceptable to you?”"”
She’s acceptable, but so is everyone else running in both parties except for the minor candidates Kucinich (D), Gravel (D) and Paul (R). She is not my favorite.
Hey Jim, which lobby do we blame for lack of real health care reform? Which one for campaign finance reform? Just curious because when you go on record making statements against a “lobby” you in efect are casting your view against its membership. If you are against the power platform of the AARP, then well you are against the retirees that make up the AARP. If you support the platform MoveON.org, which MOran does, then you are endorsing the view of its members who make the contributions. So if the Jewish groups pushed this war have they done it in any manner different than MoveOn.org way of pushing the anti-war movement? Truth in labeling folks. This guys had more run ins with foot in mouth than Don Imus.
