NLS: Rishell is Worst Candidate of 2007

By RHarrison | 21 September 2007 | Jeanette Rishell, Blogs | 20 Comments

Esteemed Democratic Blogger Not Larry Sabato’s take on Rishell is the same as ours: she is terrible.

While there is a lively debate over the legitimacy of the pictures, (For the record, Greg L. is out of town and could not have placed them) that’s not really the point. The real story here is how Rishell has completely changed her position on illegal aliens, and then tried to move to the right of Miller on the issue. As this blog has chronicled, Rishell has a long, public and proud record of supporting illegal aliens. But after hiring a fancy New York political consulting firm (more later), she did a compete 180 on the issue.

There is nothing wrong with a politician changing her mind, although some reason is usually offered. But Rishell and her supporter’s are pretending nothing happened. That’s just silly. And they are criticizing Jackson Miller as being too soft on illegal aliens, which is just dumb.

I think the pictures are legit, but can’t say for certain. I got them from a reputable source, but have no idea who actually put them up since I wasn’t there. But they are in character. Rishell was one of the most vocal protectors of illegal aliens in this area, until her political handlers told her to switch positions. The pro-illegal alien folks know where her sympathies really lie. So do the rest of us.

I agree, Rishell is truly a pathetic candidate who must think this district has a such a short memory that we can’t recall her pro illegal alien stance of one year ago.

Now she is the tough anti illegal alien candidate. We are supposed to forget that she raised funds for MSF and spoke on behalf of MSF before the Manassas City council. When a person’s word does not agree with her actions, I choose to believe her actions. In Rishell’s case, not only do her actions betray her (current) word, but her word last year betrays her current position.

In addition, can anyone tell me how a liveability court is upposed to drive illegals from Manassas and Manassas Park? It sounds more like the type of thing that will help them stay here (let’s mediate with the lawbreakers and educate them, but we don’t want to make them feel unwelcome).

One question about Rishell and her job with Carteret Mortgage. Does (or did) Carteret offer subprime mortgages? If so, then does Rishell share the blame for the foreclosure mess that is driving down our property values? I honestly do not know if this is the case, but I think it is an important question that is relevant to a serious quality of life issue in this district, and I would like an answer.

    1) Jeanette Rishell sends out two campaign mailers that
attack Jackson Miller, but say nothing about her
goals/views/plans. Her charges are just thrown out
to the wind without any sources listed. Thumbs
down to the Rishell campaign organization.
2)Some of her campaign signs show up in front of the
controversial banner at Liberty and Prince William St..
A rational, neutral observer of local politics would
have to assume these were placed there by over
    zealous Miller supporters. Thumbs down
to those “supporters” - sophomoric pranks like this
may give you a tee-hee thrill but build sympathy
for Rishell as a “victim of dirty tricks”.

The citizens of Manassas, Manassas Park and
Prince William County deserve better than this.
    Por favor.

Ms. Rishell spoke with me over a year ago and she was definitely concerned about the illegal immigration situation in our area. There seems to be a disconnect somewhere here. Perhaps that was after she hired her consulting firm.

Rishell waits to hear YOUR opinions/concerns before she speaks. Once she has determined your views she tells you what you want to hear. Kind of like a used car salesman. That is my experience from talking with her.

During her last campaign, Rishell was solidly and proudly against Jackson Miller’s plans to address the illegal alien problem. She fought his work in the Manassas City Council and she helped organize the opposition to his housing ordinance. I don’t know when she reversed her position on this issue, but it was after November 7th, 2006.

JM - My understanding is that Rishell was a fairly junior employee at Carteret Mortgage. Moreover, Carteret was a very minor player in the mortgage industry. The subprime mess came from much bigger fish in finance. I don’t think Rishell can be blamed for this problem.

Come to think of it, Rishell has such a small record that the only thing that she can claim responsibility for is her successful efforts at blocking anti-illegal alien efforts. But now she is even abandoning that work. Does anyone one know anything that Rishell has done in her adult life that is noteworthy? She has a healthy family (which is something worth noting), but what else has she done? Her bio on her website lists offices that she has held, but no actual accomplishments.

    Maybe there aren’t any.

This was before the Nov 6, 2006 election and she brought the subject up, I did not. I was discussing traffic or some other unrelated topic. I am not offering this as opinion but just what my experience with her has been.

Must have been a conversion on the way to Damascus experience (just like all of those Republican Senators who are now changing their tunes since Tom Tancredo called them out).

Just got my mail and guess who’s at it again.
Jeanette’s junk mail in my mailbox just now.
    RHARRISON,
I can fax a copy of this to you since Greg L’s away. Email if you want this newest pack of lies!!!

Thanks, but I’m on her mailing list too. I will be able to get something up this evening.

MRFII - Interesting. Jackson Miller beat Rishell up badly (politically speaking) last year over the illegal alien issue. Maybe she began to see the light before the election. I don’t have any problem with her changing her mind on this. I think lots of people were caught by surprise by the issue. I do have a problem with her trying to paint Jackson Miller as soft on illegal aliens. Miller has been at the cutting edge of this issue for several years, fighting against Rishell in many cases. If Rishell wants to admit she was wrong and state a new position, that’s fine. But don’t pretend you were always against illegal aliens.

Don’t forget RH…and she shouldn’t be blatantly lying about her opposition in the process!

  11. John Light said on 21 Sep 2007 at 3:04 pm:

Yes, she is pathetic, but MY vote for worst candidate STILL is Faisal Gill. A man who has terrorist sympathies, his law firm helps illegal aliens, and he has to go OUT of his county (McLean) in order to raise money (see my previous posts when he was running for the nomination concerning money laundering)…he makes Jeanette look like guppy in a sea of sharks.

JRishell is the worst candidate, hands down, and tied behind her back! Let’s not forget where she’s usually seen.

Jeanette can always be found Saturday mornings at the Farmer’s Market in Manassas. We should all go visit the Farmer’s Market tomorrow.
I need some green tomatoes to fry! I’ll be there early!!

We just got our mail Lafayette…and we’re on her mailing list too. Rishell and her gang have absolutely no imagination! Like my daughter said, it’s the same words (lies) simply in a different format. So Matt…still think that her lying attacks are an accidental error over which she has no control?

  14. Patty said on 21 Sep 2007 at 5:57 pm:

Call Rishell and ask her if she will write to Governor Kaine urging him to enter the state in the 287g program. I’ll bet she will not and that will be your answer as to whether she is going to be tough on illegal aliens.

  15. Lafayette said on 21 Sep 2007 at 7:00 pm:

    AWC
My compliments to young Miss Cheney! I knew she was a smart young lady.

  16. Matt said on 21 Sep 2007 at 8:06 pm:

Come on AW give me a break. I never said her attacks were an accidental error; don’t twist my words. What I said was she was getting bad advice by people who don’t have her interests and image at heart. I do not believe she would have chosen to go down this road without that poor advice. It is too bad that she took it; now she will be held responsible for it by the voters. Her tactics are a sure fire path to defeat.

  17. AWCheney said on 21 Sep 2007 at 11:33 pm:

OK Matt, as long as you concede that she is accountable for all this. Actually, I don’t know why I’m picking on you…I know what it’s like to be disappointed in someone (politically) who you thought was better than they turned out to be. I’ve been there, and should be more sympathetic. Sorry.

Still no response to my question from Jeanette regarding endorsing enrollment into 287g!

Life in Manassas became just a bit more unpleasant. The Manassas Journal reports in its Saturday edition, that devices similar to Molotov cocktails were found at 8500 Liberty Street, site of a large, pro-immigration banner. While the sign and its sentiments are protected First Amendment Speech, Molotov cocktails are not. In fact, they have NO place in any community which seeks to live by the rule of law, not the rule of agitators and malcontents.

Since the Prince William County Board of Supervisors has declared war on illegal immigrants, this area has seen a litany of unpleasant events. First, there was the KKK distributing fliers in the area; then it was the prank of Jeanette Rishell’s opponents placing her campaign signs by the banner with photos that magically appeared on local conservative, anti-immigration blogs; next came counter signs anonymously dropped off saying things like, “Go back, Speak English. This is Not Mexico.” and “Your (sic) Lucky To be Here.’” Finally, the explosive devices tossed on the property.

City Council had best step up to this situation and defuse it quickly and promptly. Councilor Jonathan Way left no doubt where he stood when he was quoted as saying, “I hope we catch the evildoers and run them out of town.” Bravo!

Unfortunately, not all of Council has Way’s good sense.

Councilor Marc Aveni, the man who wants to bring the Prince William County’s immigration stance to Manassas, is quoted in the same MJM article saying, “This is the kind of climate they (illegal immigrant supporters) are creating by putting up the sign in the first place. They are not blameless.”

Mr. Aveni has just made this situation more volatile. One would think he would engage his brain before saying such inflaming comments. But, as my mother always said, “COMMON SENSE IS NOT VERY COMMON.”

Hopefully the other members of Council have some!
