Mexicans Without Borders To Protest In Manassas

By Greg L | 28 September 2007 | Zapatistas, Illegal Aliens, Manassas City | 120 Comments

Mexicans Without Borders is planning to have a bit of a demonstration tomorrow morning in Old Town Manassas at the site of the current ugly example of urban decay that they’ve erected at the corner of Liberty and Prince William Streets. They’ve named this eyesore the “liberty wall” in the same fashion as their EZLN parent organization creates “liberty walls” in Mexico, one of which is shown above. From what I’ve heard, they intend to unveil a new version of the sign that’s currently standing, which is probably a response to the strong negative reaction that the current sign has generated.

Mexicans Without Borders applied for a protest permit, but because this is right across from the always-busy Farmer’s Market and there’s a Chili Cookoff happening tomorrow as well, the permit was denied. Mexicans Without Borders intends to proceed anyways, and will be required to limit the area of this demonstration to the private property where this sign is erected and will have to comply with all applicable city ordinances. Hopefully they will.

I won’t be able to go and see what happens tomorrow. If you’ve got a camera and/or a video camera and some time tomorrow morning, it would be a good idea to go down and help document what happens. These events often have some interesting details that the press seems to neglect, perhaps because they don’t like documenting the political tone-deafness of these organizations or documenting the presence of the Socialist Worker’s Party and the other fringe radical organizations that make up a substantial part of the crowd at events by Mexicans Without Borders. If anyone’s considering going to the Farmer’s Market tomorrow to sign up new members during this circus, please remember that you can’t do it within the confines of the area where the Farmer’s Market is being held — you’ll have to do this outside of that area, on the sidewalks.

Once again, the residents of Manassas City are going to suffer a little because Mexicans Without Borders can’t figure out where the political boundaries are drawn in the area and want to be widely irresponsible, rather than just irresponsible in Prince William County. Now we’ll get another example of what that irresponsibility looks like.

What clowns. Hopefully they’ll at least leave their machetes at home.

UPDATE 4PM Saturday: it looks like the festivities are finally kicking off after quite a delay. Reports coming in indicate that the sign hasn’t been changed yet. Stay tuned for additional details, as they become available.

UPDATE 2: The original sign is still there, and about all that happened is that Mexicans Without Borders had a party at the site.  Again, it looks like their attempt to create a big spectacle has fizzled.

They will need to have a demonstration permit if they plan on demonstrating on public property in the city. If they do not have a permit, I would think anyone could call the Manassas City police and ask that the demonstration be disbanded.

Perhaps someone might call the office of the city manager or city attorney’s office and ask if any groups hold demonstration permits for tomorrow. Perhaps they need a heads up that this ‘event’ is going to happen.

If they do not hold a permit it looks like they will have to stomp around on that abandoned property to hold their demonstration. From the looks of things, they just might need a machete to chop their way through the weeds.

    RU Paul,

The permit is issued to an individual for a group, if I am not mistaken.

I cannot recall if Bob Bendall’s office is responsible or the city manager. You have every right to call and ask who holds the permit for the demonstration. Anyone planning on demonstrating needs to know the name of the permit holder so it is a very smart bit of information to obtain.

They will be limited to the “ugly sign” property. I’m sure if they wonder off, the PD will be on it - let’s hope.

Anyone at this rally should report anyone wearing masks (as in the photo above) without the required written permission. This is a felony and violators should be arrested and put in the line for processing for deportation.

    Virginia State Code

§ 18.2-422. Prohibition of wearing of masks in certain places; exceptions.

It shall be unlawful for any person over sixteen years of age while wearing any mask, hood or other device whereby a substantial portion of the face is hidden or covered so as to conceal the identity of the wearer, to be or appear in any public place, or upon any private property in this Commonwealth without first having obtained from the owner or tenant thereof consent to do so in writing. However, the provisions of this section shall not apply to persons (i) wearing traditional holiday costumes; (ii) engaged in professions, trades, employment or other activities and wearing protective masks which are deemed necessary for the physical safety of the wearer or other persons; (iii) engaged in any bona fide theatrical production or masquerade ball; or (iv) wearing a mask, hood or other device for bona fide medical reasons upon the advice of a licensed physician or osteopath and carrying on his person an affidavit from the physician or osteopath specifying the medical necessity for wearing the device and the date on which the wearing of the device will no longer be necessary and providing a brief description of the device. The violation of any provisions of this section shall constitute a Class 6 felony.

    (Code 1950, §§ 18.1-364, 18.1-367; 1960, c. 358; 1975, cc. 14, 15; 1986, c. 19.)

Here’s another item from the Virginia Code. Note the reference to machetes, as one or more of the individuals in the photo are holding. Note also that the way the law is written, the machete does not need to be completely concealed to violate the law. It needs only to be carried in such a way that, “it is observable but is of such deceptive appearance as to disguise the weapon’s true nature.”

Any of these guys wearing masks and holding machetes should be arrested on the spot and shipped back to wherever they came from. They might argue that they intend no harm but remember the exchange from the first “Dirty Harry” movie when the chief, played by John Vernon of Dean Wormer (”Animal House”) fame asked Harry (Clint Eastwood) how he knew an individual he had shot intended to rape a woman. Harry replied that whenever he sees a naked man with a knife and a h*** o* chasing a woman he doesn’t figure the guy is out collecting for charity (please pardon if I didn’t get the quote exactly right). By the same token, any of these hoodlums wearing a mask and holding a machete should be assumed to have criminal acts on their minds.

I know it was only a movie, but I still can’t stop wishing that we had Dirty Harry instead of Charlie Deane (I guess Charlie is more analogous to the Dean Wormer actor’s character than Dirty Harry anyway).

§ 18.2-308. Personal protection; carrying concealed weapons; when lawful to carry.

    A. If any person carries about his person, hidden from common observation, (i) any pistol, revolver, or other weapon designed or intended to propel a missile of any kind by action of an explosion of any combustible material; (ii) any dirk, bowie knife, switchblade knife, ballistic knife, machete, razor, slingshot, spring stick, metal knucks, or blackjack; (iii) any flailing instrument consisting of two or more rigid parts connected in such a manner as to allow them to swing freely, which may be known as a nun chahka, nun chuck, nunchaku, shuriken, or fighting chain; (iv) any disc, of whatever configuration, having at least two points or pointed blades which is designed to be thrown or propelled and which may be known as a throwing star or oriental dart; or (v) any weapon of like kind as those enumerated in this subsection, he shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. A second violation of this section or a conviction under this section subsequent to any conviction under any substantially similar ordinance of any county, city, or town shall be punishable as a Class 6 felony, and a third or subsequent such violation shall be punishable as a Class 5 felony. For the purpose of this section, a weapon shall be deemed to be hidden from common observation when it is observable but is of such deceptive appearance as to disguise the weapon’s true nature.

As you can see, the post clearly states that the Liberty wall shown above is in Mexico.

It is relevant because the prupose of tomorrow’s protest is to unveil another “liberty wall” here in Manassas. Greg is using the above as an example of what may be in store for our community.

BTW, please notice the uneven platforms that look like they are about to collapse. I’ll bet the folks who built those are now working as day laborers here.

Where in the heck did they get the idea of a “liberty wall”? From their breateren in the Zapatista Army of National Liberation in Mexico, and here’s the documentation that the EZLN regularly does this. This is yet another documented instance of Mexicans Without Borders following the political strategies of the EZLN in Mexico, and that not only makes this picture relevant, but important.

I dont think there is a free clinic, I wish there was. I spent a few thousand just to put my dog down a few months ago.

I do know there are reduced price clinics that can give shots and spay/neuter. I use belvoir for shots since it’s cheap and I’m in the military. For surgery and other stuff I have to go elsewhere.

I would recommend pet insurance when you buy an animal. It’s cheap (about 15.00 - 25.00 per month) and it’s well worth it if your animal gets in trouble.

I just got my remaining dog insured, it cost more because he’s older but it’s better than paying 3K to put them asleep.

i’m not too big on the individual delegates but Rishell confuses me. I just went to her website and saw that she basically supports no amnesty, clearing boarding houses and just about everything else I want.

However why are her signs deployed next to that crappy one in manassas? and why do I hear she’s doing alot of double-speak.

I’m curious, what exactly does she stand for? From looking at her website it seems she presents herself as pretty solid.

Or the Rishell signs were placed there by people who do like her, and we can draw our own conclusions about her based upon the people who support her.

If someone placed the signs on the property without the owner’s permission, that is trespass. Before anyone is accused of a crime, please provide proof.

I’m an independent for the most part, I pretty much vote for whomever has the best support for the issues that concern me. I dont vote on party lines however in many instances I do lean to the republican side.

About the signs, are they still there? if so then I would suspect the owner of the property knows about them and had the chance to remove them. If they are still there, then someone from the Rishell campaign likely put them there. If so, I dont think she’ll be getting my vote for sure. Not that I would have voted for her before but those signs would seal the deal for sure.

Well, the protest looked just about what you’d expect your average church picnic to look like. Kids running around with a soccer ball. Socializing women. Men kicking up dust behind the sign working on something, likely breaking up/shoveling bits of foundation.

I took 30 pics and other than a couple of guys scowling at me have nothing of interest.

If they’re going to erect a new sign I suspect it will be later, though the police and possibly code enforcement paid a visit around 1:45pm.

Anyhow, a whole lot of hype for a picnic.

Was nice meeting a few other HSM folks who were there observing.

    Josh,

Don’t you live in Lake Ridge? I am not sure you live in the district where she is running. At any rate, last check, the signs were down. I heard that volunteers from her campaign took them down but that doesn’t make it so.

I will have to say, this candidate, on paper, supports many things that are important to me, but she has done a horrible job of promoting herself and the issues. I think it would be fair to say, she has done no job at all.

The Prince William County Democrats spend too much time fighting with each other to help their candidates run an effective campaign, it appears. This has been a long standing problem here in the county. Most of them are interested in themselves above principles and what is best for their county, state and country. Most, not all.

From what I can tell, Prince William Republicans have the same problem. I just think they are playing this election cycle much smarter than the Democrats, who really don’t seem to be playing at all.

If your not involved in law enforcement let me enlighten you, if you use the spray you have to know what it does to others. The only way to do this is to get sprayed yourself, make sense?

I have had more than my share of rumbles, but that was in my younger days when I had far more energy than I do now but I can still throw down when the situation requires.

These days I’m looking for good laughs instead of rumbles, I get more than my share of laughs here on this board reading your idiotic posts. you should be in comedy. Looked like a minimal turnout. Nancy L, John S, and Ricardo J were all there. Sounds like John S. didn’t stay to long. All was wrapped up by about 7:45. Looks, like the weren’t to successful with this either, just like the “big boycott”. I had to laugh at how many “green signs”, there were in the City of Manassas(week of boycott). When the boycott was aimed at PWC. Clearly the ring leaders listed above just don’t have their facts straight, and pass their mis-information on to their followers. This not help anyone, and most certainly not themselves.
Remember, HSM will have a booth next weekend at the Fall Festival in the City of Manassas. I think it will be good for signing up new members, the fair sure was good for the increase of membership(700 new members-estimate).

This is an excerpt from an email I received from a Manassas City resident.

    Sent: Friday, September 28, 2007 11:44:39 PM
I came home to burglars this morning.

“I had just returned home from a walk (with my 4yo and 2yo in the jogger) around 10:45am and started opening the garage door. As I’m doing this, a car that had been parked across the street drove slowly by honking his horn. I looked at him, didn’t recognize him and thought “Why are you honking like that in this neighborhood?” (Later I realized this was the “lookout”). While driving away, he turned to face me and waved. Noted: Young Hispanic Man with flashy rims. Strange I figured. So the garage door opens and I hear the phone ringing. I ran in to get it and ran back out (the kids were still outside). So I’m chatting away on the phone while standing out front in the shade of a tree, when I hear a commotion coming from the right… then 2 Hispanic appearing young males (late teens?) came RUNNING from my home!!! I started yelling at them and chasing them, while trying to hang up and call 911. One guy had pulled his white tshirt over his head while he ran away. When I got to the corner I could see them running up Amaryllis toward Wellington . I guess I got too far from home because the call didn’t go through (land line). Gayle was out in her driveway and saw them running. I ran back toward the house and called 911 and MCP was there very quickly and in numbers patrolling the area. Later we found out that 2 other neighbors out for a walk also saw them running up Amaryllis & Allwood. Gayle patrolled around and Sean had also seen them running. Also, a neighbor’s House Cleaner came out and gave a description of the vehicle and suspicious people she saw.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get the license plate numbers of the vehicle. All of our windows and doors were locked. It appears that the intruders first tried the kitchen window, cutting the screen, but since the window was locked, they moved on to the sliding glass door (there are pry marks), then eventually the family room window, cut the screen and broke out the window. Then whoever crawled through the window opened a back sliding door for the next guy. It was left open. Not sure why they left through the front. Perhaps I startled them (unknowingly) when I came in from the garage to get the phone. I think the commotion I heard was them fumbling with the child safe doorknob. It doesn’t appear that they were in the house very long. So far, we have discovered only a watch missing. They found a large buck knife (stored and untouched by us for years), but left it on the bed.
FORTUNATELY, no one was hurt. FORTUNATELY, there were other witnesses that might be able to make an identification. Even with all this, chances are they may not get caught.
Thank you to all my (unofficial) Neighborhood Watch friends. I hope this never happens to you. PLEASE STAY AWARE AND REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY!!”

UPDATE: MCPD has taken some of the neighborhood ‘kids’ into custody for this crime.

Why are there so many truants running around here. I see them in the county and in the Manassas(City) too. This sounds like kids/punks for sure. I am blessed to work at home. I do go out for an hour or two everyday. On my fairly short drive to the courthouse, I always see at least 2 school aged children roaming our streets. Where have the Truant Officers gone?
I’m very pleased to see MCPD has taken some “kids” into custody.

When she contacted the MCPD yesterday she was told that one person was questioned and another suspect would be questioned on Tuesday when the detectice assigned to the case returned to work.

Thanks for posting this event. I have found that many Manassas residents “think” that Wellington does not have problems but we do - far too many. Our neighborhood has deteriorated over the past 3 years and I am no longer comfortable walking my dog at night or letting my kids walk just a few doors down to their friends house. Activities that I would not hesitate to do just a few years back.

“Two Woodbridge men were arrested after attacking each other with machetes in the 1700 block of Horner Road in Woodbridge around 4:20 a.m. Sunday, said Officer Erika Hernandez, Prince William police spokeswoman.

Bereni S. Dede, 28, of 1721 Horner Road, was charged with malicious wounding, obstruction of justice and assault and battery on a police officer. Jeremias Wilberto Ramirez, 30, of 1719 Horner Road, was charged with attempted malicious wounding.

Police said the two were drinking when they began to fight. Ramirez is accused of attacking Dede, who police say retaliated, cutting Ramirez’s hands with the machete.

According to police, Dede then began to fight when officers were arresting him.”

Machetes in CRIMES is different than standing in a public display. How many people have committed crimes in private with guns that never would show them at a display??
