Manassas City Town Hall Tonight
By Greg L | 1 October 2007 | Manassas City | 8 Comments
There will be a town hall meeting with the Manassas City Council at Baldwin Elementary School at 7PM tonight. The illegal alien issue will probably be a pretty significant topic of conversation, and unless readers are comfortable with illegal alien lobby dominating the discussion, making it out to Baldwin this evening may be a priority. In past town halls, the illegal alien lobby has typically shown up in some force in order to complain about any ideas that might hold illegal aliens accountable for their unlawful actions.
With Prince William County adopting some strong policies to do just this, there’s some risk that surrounding jurisdictions such as Manassas City will be viewed as marginally more hospitable to illegal aliens. Since there’s a large number of shared services between the county and Manassas City, having different standards for statutory benefits may encourage some to move to Manassas from the county in order to continue to qualify for benefits that they otherwise would not be eligible for if they stayed in the county. Tonight might be a good opportunity for citizens to talk about the benefits of having Manassas harmonize it’s approach to illegal aliens in regards to city services, just as is now being done with law enforcement under the Regional Criminal Alien Initiative.
Baldwin Elementary School is located at 9705 South Main Street Manassas, Virginia 20110.

I am unable to attend tonight. Please keep us posted on what transpires at this meeting. Unlike many illegals, I don’t have a bunch of “cousins” residing with me to help me watch my kids.
I hope they touch upon the recent crime surge in the Wellington area.
Unbelievable amount of money spent in LA county for provide welfare for illegal aliens. Imagine what it must cost our entire country!

I would encourage citizens to attend if possible. Also, for those who plan to attend, I hope they remember that the City Council is very much in favor of doing something about the issue. If anything, it is the city staff who are the “speedbumps”. Manassas participates in 287g, has hired an additional zoning inspector, etc. It’s Ok tow express your frustration, but understand that the problem is the illegal alien lobby and their influence on City Staff, not the actual elected officials. Aveni, Way, Harrover, Randolph and even Parrish may be moving forward cautiously, but they are moving forward.
If I’m not mistaken, we’ve already directed the staff to begin studying the county study for changes that we have to make when the County implements their new policies. Some changes will need to take place because the jurisdictions share so many services.
In addition, county officers have jurisdiciton in the city and vice versa so we will need to examine our “general orders” to make sure the departments can continue to work together.
Dear BDB 2:31, how do you know what City Staff thinks or wants? Are you part of City Staff? Before you characterize all of City staff, maybe you should talk to them and cease lumping them all together. How do you know that the illegal alien lobby have any influence on City staff?

Between Greg and Andy H we should be able to get a really good report on the meeting last night. How about it gentlemen, would someone please report on the Council meeting?
I got there right before citizens time and missed a lot.
It seemed Chief Skinner was on his feet quite a bit, microphone in hand answering questions / comments citizens brought up.
By the way Greg, you did a great job at citizens time. Thanks.
