Sen. Colgan has Outsourced His Campaign

By RHarrison | 2 October 2007 | Uncategorized | 40 Comments

Has anyone else noticed that all of Senator Colgan’s mailings are paid for by the Democratic Party of Virginia?

Senator Colgan recently sold Colagn Air for something like $22 million.  Moreover, as a senior Senator he can raise all the money he wants easily.  But he hasn’t done that.  Instead, he is pulling money away from other Democratic candidates in the state because he doesn’t feel like campaigning for himself.

If I were a Democrat, that would really irritate me.

Bob FitzSimmonds has a real shot to win. Beating an incument is always tough but Colgan has put no effort in this and Bob has been targeted by the GOP. Keep your eyes on this one. With JMDD way behind and Richard Stuart down double digits, Bob could be the difference between 19 and 20 GOP Senators.

Being 81 years old, he may not have the energy to do this himself, which leads me to wonder if he has the energy to serve another term.

It’s too bad that we had to run FitzSimmonds. This might have been a relatively effortless. Of course, had FitzSimmonds not run, Colgan might not have run either. I wouldn’t be surprised if he just had a Harry Parrish moment and decided he was doggoned if he was going to let the seat go to someone of that caliber (in hindsight, perhaps a bad choice of metaphors, but you know what I mean). As Senator Warner realized, being 80 and running for office is probably not the most satisfying way to spend one’s golden years. We should have given Senator Colgan an honorable out.

Senator Colgan has served this area very well. The Democratic Party of Virginia, I am told, supplied money to all the campaigns in this area. It was a management decision at the highest level.

I’ve also gotten stuff in the mail from Sharon Pandak, it too was paid for by the Democratic Party. It was on thick glossy paper legal size. I wonder if Sharon is concerned for all the trees that had to be cut down for her mailer. It was funny, it has pictures of trees, and then Sharon pix stuck in the ad!!!

Chuck Colgan is going to receive a boatload of money from the Democratic Party of Virginia. Colgan has been a great player for the Democrats, he sponsored the minimum wage bill, voted for in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, plays nice with developers and endorses candidates as crazy as Rishell as long as they have a D attached to them. Colgan does all of this while never sponsoring any pro-life legislation (although he says he REALLY cares about that issue). Heck, I hear some of the folks down at DPV really like Shenandoah too!

Colgan will have all the money and spinsters he wants but at the end of the day, he has failed to address illegal immigration, watched the transportation crisis develop and will not be returned to Richmond.

Comments like yours detract from the actual issues at hand and thus do a disservice to everyone.

I find it hard to believe that after all this time so many know-it-alls like Greg L. and Lafeyette still haven’t learned the most basic things about political campaigns. The state parties get a discount from mail vendors for volume mailings, so often the party does the discounted mailing for a candidate, who then reimburses them. It’s all legal and disclosed in the campaign finance reports. You’ve been blogging this tripe for a while now, are you learning-impaired in some way, or just plain dumb?

    “Colgan…voted for in-state tuition for illegal immigrants…”

Maybe you should check your facts, Anonymous…Colgan voted AGAINST in-state tuition for illegal aliens in 2007 (SB 1204-2007). Go ahead and keep taking the “Rishell Route” per the “Chapman Method.” It’s one of those things which give politics and pols such a good name. Of course, I shouldn’t be surprised considering Bob FitzSimmonds was such a huge Chapman supporter right from the beginning, when they arranged to “move” him into the district. With regard to his pro-life record, given the plethora of pro-life legislation that rolls through the GA every year, I doubt that it would be necessary for him to sponsor any more legislation himself. Why don’t you report on his VOTING record…or are you afraid that it will make a fool of you?

Just to make sure all the cards are on the table. All of the Bob Fitsimmons stuff that I have received in the mail has been paid for by the Republican Party of Virginia. If we are going to compare apples to apples, it should be pointed out that Bob is doing the same thing as Chuck. Just and FYI.

AWCheney, I agree let’s check the facts. I’m certain you’ve read that bill yourself and aren’t just relying on the Colgan mailer paid for by the illegal immigrant apologists at DPV.

Just in case you haven’t read the bill though, it does indeed grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. Read the whole thing. After the beginning that restricts in-state tuition, it lists an exception explaining how illegal immigrants can receive the benefit. This exception is why the House opposed this version of the bill (they amended it so it would actually stop illegals from receiving in-state tuition).

This difference is why conservatives in the Senate like Cuccinelli, Obenshain, etc. voted against it there and why the entire PWC House delegate supported a different version (a version that actually barred illegals from receiving in-state tuition).

AWCheney, actually Colgan doesn’t get to vote on abortion very often because the Ed and Health Committee is chaired by the pro-choice Russ Potts so few bills make it out. Colgan could be on Ed and Health (or Transportation for that matter) but he has chosen to be on other committees.

Colgan has consistently supported pro-choice Dick Saslaw to be his party’s floor leader in recent years, contributed to pro-choice Leslie Byrne against pro-life Bill Bolling, contributed to pro-choice Janette Rishell against pro-life Jackson Miller, and contributed to pro-choice Mark Herring against pro-life Mick Staton.

Colgan use to sponsor pro-life legislation, but hasn’t in the last term. I guess that makes him better on abortion than he is on illegal immigration (zero bills in 32 years). Colgan doesn’t sponsor pro-life legislation and frequently contributes to pro-choice candidates, doesn’t sound very pro-life to me.

At this point, I’m on the cusp of becoming a Dem. What has
happened to the Republican Party in this county? We have
elected officials (Rep) supporting Dems and I’ve always been
led to believe that we have to support our own. Caddigan is
working in partnership w/Pandank and Caddigan coordinated
the Glen Hill/Pandank partnership. Hill is also supporting
Colgan, and he has made no secret of his support of Beauchamp.
Word comes from the Hill group that he has extracted a firm
promise from the Colgan clan to help Ray become sheriff (after
his next term is up) in exchange for being hired as security
director (at a six figure salary).
Not only is Hill helping the enemy but is bad-mouthing the
    Republican party.
Something should be done about this…fined, reprimanded,
    expelled from the party?

The parties get cheaper postage rates. So even if a candidate is paying for his or her own mail, it makes sense to write the party a check to cover postage and production.

So in reality, the candidate could be paying for it by making an offsetting donation to the party. It makes sense, you save something like $.10 / piece in non-profit postage costs (campaigns do not qualify as non-profits, parties do) and nobody that actually looks to see who paid gives a damn.

    Chippenham,

That practice of “renting out” a non-profit bulk rate permit is a violation of postal regulations. Jeanette Rishell got pounded on for this last year, and the DPVA’s bulk permit could have been revoked as a result.

Further irrefutable evidence of the Caddigan/Pandank
partnership. Go anywhere in Caddigan’s district and you
will see signs stapled together with Pandank’s signs (in at
least 20 locations…..not side by side, but stapled and mingled
in a way that leaves little doubt that these 2 gals are partners)
Where the signs are not stapled, they are glued together!
As for the photo with Lucy, it may well have been taken before
she bolted from the Rep party, but why is it still on her web

    Republican candidate: Michele McQuigg!

Bill, I’m in the process of researching ALL votes on illegal alien issues from 2006-07, per your recommendation. You’re right…I pulled that off of Chuck’s flyer, which I had just received in the mail when I posted that comment. I do not yet, however, know that it was not a legitimate vote against the illegal aliens (there’s a lot of material through which to wade because I’ve broadened my scope). Whatever legislative information I compile I will turn over to Maureen Wood, the Legislative Committee Chairman for Help Save Manassas.

I’ll say this, if I was wrong about the vote on the bill, I apologize in advance (always willing to admit I’m wrong…if I can satisfy myself that I am). If not, I take back my apology. :-)

I’m intrigued by “Gone Fishing’s” 0956 comment: 1. What is the Glenn Hill/Pandak “partnership” that you speak of as if it is a registered business? Please explain and amplify. Which “Hill Group” announced that the Sheriff had extracted a firm commitment from Colgan to support Ray in return for a six-figure job as security director? Details please. And is there any reason that Hill should not have supported Beauchamp, a long-time Republican who simply gave up on the crippled and ineffectual local Republican machinery in PWC, at least up until she became an independent candidate. Even running as an independent, she is a formidable Republican in the County. What’s the timing on Hill’s support for Beauchamp? I certainly supported her (monetarily) before she became an Independent based on her up-to-that-point solid GOP credentials. I’d be pleased if she came back to the Party in the future. You report all this as though these are almanac-type facts. Back it up or recant.

I think the above demonstrates that when the senate supported the initial version of this bill, it was something guaranteeing in-state tuition rates for illegal aliens. When it got to the House they passed a substitute that said the exact opposite. The Senate rejected the house substitute, it went to conference, and what was reported out was essentially the House version.

The January 23rd vote by Colgan was a vote in favor of in-state tuition for illegal aliens.
