Gerry Connolly: Welcome Mat For Illegals To Stay Out

By Greg L | 23 October 2007 | Gerry Connolly, Fairfax County, Illegal Aliens | 26 Comments

Gerry Connolly apparently thinks that rolling out the welcome mat for illegal aliens to unlawfully reside in Fairfax County is good policy, and isn’t going to change that anytime soon.  At the same time the Fairfax County Sheriff wants to put it away by enrolling the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department in the Section 287(g) Program, and the county executive is looking at what public benefits can be restricted to legal residents only at the request of Supervisor Michael Frey.  Gerry, I think those around you have figured out that your policies are complete losers, and are starting to break ranks.

Which is a really good idea when Connolly starts trotting whoppers like this out to the Washington Post:

“I can just tell you Fairfax County is not going to go the route of some of our neighbors,” Connolly, who is seeking a second term as chairman Nov. 6, said during a meeting with Washington Post reporters and editors. “We’re not going to demagogue. We’re not going to essentially roll back the welcome mat. . . . That’s not why I ran for office and that isn’t who we are, and we’re not going to do that.”

Hopefully Gary Baise can rescue Fairfax from this idiocy.  If possible, I’d like to see Connolly retired to work at the Centreville Public Library for a week so he can see first-hand what his “welcome mat” is doing to Fairfax County.

In another development up in New York, the legislature has a bill before it that would overturn the Governor’s directive to grant driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. Should the Governor be successful at this ploy, Virginia would have to recognize such licenses as valid (under the US Constitution’s full faith and credit clause). My question is, would having a New York drivers’ license, issued after the Governor’s directive is implemented, be evidence indicating the holder is an illegal alien? I would think so.

Fred Thompson says he would cut federal funding to sanctuary cities and states. Up until now, he has not been a strong candidate on immigration. Also, I don’t think he will win the nomination, even as the Guiliani campaign seems to be imploding. However, I do like where he announced the plan! It’s a good idea, and one I hope is taken up by someone in congress.

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson on Tuesday plans to announce an immigration policy that will include stripping federal grant money from cities and states that don’t report illegal immigrants.
Thompson chose Collier County, which has a large farmworker population, for his announcement and plans to meet with the county’s sheriff, Don Hunter, before announcing details of his border security and immigration enforcement proposal.

A major part of the plan will be to reduce the number of illegal immigrants by increasing enforcement of existing law. Sanctuary cities, where city employees are not required to report illegal immigrants to federal authorities, would lose discretionary federal grants, said a campaign source who didn’t want to be named because the plan hasn’t been announced.

Thompson, a former Tennessee senator, will also call for stronger laws to force employers to verify that workers aren’t illegal immigrants, a more rigorous system to track who is coming in and out of the country and a plan to increase prosecution of “coyotes,” smugglers who bring illegal immigrants across the Mexican border, the source said. He will also talk about border security.

At a campaign stop in Georgia last week, Thompson accused rivals Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani of being soft on illegal immigration when Romney was Massachusetts’ governor and Giuliani was New York’s mayor.

Romney and Giuliani have also called for tougher immigration enforcement and opposed an immigration bill that failed earlier this year which would have provided a path to citizenship for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country. Arizona Sen. John McCain supported the legislation.

Collier County has vast tomato farms that hire thousands of immigrants. Last year it was part of a two-county sweep with 163 illegal immigrants arrested in one weekend. The campaign plans to cite figures that 22 percent of the county’s crime is committed by illegal immigrants and that 40 percent of county’s arrest warrants are for illegal immigrants.

Connolly is trying to appease citizens by enforcing zoning laws. Ha, Ha, Connolly, Prince William County tried that and it didn’t work. Connolly, when are you going to pull your head out of the sand. Of course he thinks illegal immigration is contributing to the wonderful diversity of Fairfax County.

I hope Baise wins so that citizens of Fairfax will be free from Connolly’s bondage.

    Advocator-

“Virginia would have to recognize such licenses as valid (under the US Constitution’s full faith and credit clause). ”

Not necessarily, this is not absolute, particularly where differences in statutory law exists.

    Dan:

I agree, nothing’s absolute, especially in the law. But lacking any legislation addressing NY’s license by the VA Assembly, I would expect Va to recognize the validity of another state’s license, resulting in Va DMV giving licenses to illegals who have moved here from NY, after obtaining a license there. This is another example of the dilemma the federal government has placed states and localities in by (1) Not enforcing the law; and by (2) Opening the borders.

When i moved to VA, i had to prove my legal presence to get a VA drivers license. I needed to bring in my passport. So no problem there. But what will our police do with a driver with a new york drivers license?

Let’s arrest them, detain, and then deport them back to New York. :)

Article on tragic death of child at the hands of a person whose name is different in the article than in the land records of PWC. Can we get a handle on this?

Connolly, Moran, Colgan, Rishell, Riley and Pandak will do NOTHING about illegal aliens. I’m sure others can add to this list.

Please distinguish Corey Riley from me. I don’t want to be mistaken for that person.

In response to Le @ 3:05

The name thing is rather interesting. The paper lists his names as Freddy Herrera, and the land records show Freddy Parra. my suspicion tells me something is afoul. I did a Google on Freddy Parra and it seems like Freddy Parra is/was some kind of revoluntionary in Venezuela. I don’t speak/read Spanish, but it looks funny to me.

The name discrepancy is interesting, is there something going on here? Freddy Parra, Freddy Herrera. Which is it?

A free internet background search says Freddy g Parra of Woodbridge is 43 years old, is this a coincidence? to the 44 year old Freddy Herrera that was reported in the MJM story? Who wants to do some investigative reporting?

Advocator, what do you mean by this exactly?

“My question is, would having a New York drivers’ license, issued after the Governor’s directive is implemented, be evidence indicating the holder is an illegal alien? I would think so.”

Do you mean along with a certain appearance, accent, or name, because I assume you acknowledge the vast majority of new New York licenses will be granted to non-illegal aliens. Would you be questioning anyone with a New York license? If not, why not?

The house is big, but on less than 1/2 acre. But wide driveway with 3 cars could hold six, not to mention the garage. Is the Venezuelan also married to someone named Julia?

Greg you should alert everyone to these Freddy Parra/Herrera discrepancies, and see if we can get someone to look into this.

I moved to PWC county in 2005 and had to show my passport and my RI drivers license and my closing papers to prove I lived in the county. They said my certified birth certificate would have worked as well instead of my passport.

My friends who live in Centreville some just down from that library have all said they are not voting for Connelly this year. Hope they talk to their friends who talk to their friends and maybe a change will occur.

I swapped my Massachusetts license for a Virginia one when I moved here many years ago. There are some states that have a reciprical agreement whereby they will accept each other’s licenses.
