One voice, I have seen the schedule for the training of the officers, it is on what are called "Squad Days" where two shifts overlap so no overtime is invovled. Again, this training is where the most impact will be made regardless of when the Criminal Alien unit is formed because these officers are the ones who will have the first, most direct contact with anyone. Overtime was budgeted but does not necessarily have to be used to train.

Its true there are two six month classes per year, however the deployment of those officers currently on staff is within the purveiw of the Chief of Police to assign based upon trends, needs etc. If ICE opens up 287G slots, they do not have to wait until those six specific slots are filled behind them to use and apply the training.

The number selected for ICE 287(g) is 6 NOT 7-9. That was clearly stated in both BOS presentations.

"I've seen that department hires officers for the academy in a matter of weeks". True but they only run two sessions per year. So if they are not hired for the December/January session they will have to wait until June/July.

Training the whole department will cost overtime. That was clearly stated in the the BOS presentation.

Check your source :)

One Voice, there will only be a few officers selected for 287G training, 7 to 9 of them. The rest of the 500 plus will start their in house immigration training within weeks. They will NOT be getting 287G training. So that part of the program is in motion now. That's what I was telling you - that training is already scheduled.

The cost outlay for training (including 287G) for seven officers, to include lodging and per diem (if necessary) will be less than $5000 and will be taken from money set aside annually for out of department training. It will then be repaid when the money is released from the $330k.

The In house department training will be conducted by current department staff at the County's academy or other facility thus making the actual cash outlay minimal if not nonexistent.

The department will not be waiting 18 months to implement this program. Those new hires will backfill those 7 to 9 slots that go for 287G training. By the way, once hired it takes a little over 9 months for an officer to reach full time patrol duty - a six month academy and three months FTO (field training Officer time) until release. Yes, the hiring process can take a bit of time, but it does not add 9 months for a total of 18 months. I've seen that department hire officers for the academy in a matter of weeks.

The information I am trying to give you is correct - I've read the memos....

AWC,

How can the registrars confirm the information? It seems a lot easier to require proof in the first place than to go around after the fact, sifting through information. Perhaps this federal legislation needs to be revisited. There is just too much room for abuse.

Dolph, legislation was already enacted some years back by the Federal Government ELIMINATING the need to prove citizenship and residency (Motor Voter). The State, however, CAN mandate that the information on those voter registration applications be confirmed so that our Registrars no longer need rely upon the "honor system." Ultimately, it will serve to discourage the attempt at fraud in the first place...I believe it's a felony to put your signature on that pledge that all the information you have provided is true and accurate if it is not. I would think that illegal aliens would find it prudent to stay away from felonies, particularly in the current climate.

It sounds to me like as much effort should be put into confirming citizenship when registering to vote as when getting a driver's license. Perhaps legislation is needed to ensure that this happens.

I think we also need legislation that requires the deceased to be removed from the list of registered voters also.

Voter fraud has been around a long time and it appears our current system does very little to discourage nefarious voting behavior. Too many of our ancestors have fought long and hard to have the right to vote for us to relax and allow those who are not citizens to abuse this right.

By the way, when I say LEGAL STATUS, I mean, of course, the residency and CITIZENSHIP of the applicants. It is very possible that LEGAL aliens might not be aware that they do not have the right to vote until such time as they achieve citizenship...and there are certainly many unscrupulous people out there who would be delighted to take advantage of that.

Absolutely, Legal2...just because we have not yet KNOWINGLY experienced a glut of illegal alien votes does not mean that it cannot, or will not happen. The SBE needs to be mandated to require the local Registrars to CONFIRM the legal status of all applicants for voter registration...the means already exist, and it's a simple, inexpensive process (again, Greg is far more familiar with that process than I).

Firstbelegal

The new hires have to be hired now so they are ready to fill in when the others go for 287(g) training. It takes 18 months for a new officer to make it to the street. There is a cost outaly to police as ICE does not pay for lodging and meals, if necessary. Read the ICE website.

Call and check. Read the staff memos. The information I am trying to give you is accurate. :)

One Voice, the police training for the officers is already scheduled. They won't be hiring new officers for the 287G program. They will be using experienced detectives and backfill those slots vacated with new hires. So they can train them as soon as ICE opens up slots. 287G training is on a wait list and that training is done at no cost outlay to the County Police. But the training for all 500 plus is already scheduled and distributed to each officer to attend.

The place to begin is the local Voter Registration Rolls, which can be purchased from the State Board of Elections. Many of the better financed candidates and most of the local political party units should have them, but they certainly would have access to them. They should be checked against the information available from Homeland Security and/or ICE (Greg knows a great deal more about that then I do)...only then can specific challenges be made to the voter rolls. Of course, this is something that the SBE, or even the local Registrars (if they were permitted), could do much more easily. It's just another example of how the law is not enforced BY POLICY, in this case on the State level.

AWCheney: "I don’t know if anybody remembers Lafayette, but I mentioned once before on a thread some time ago that a County Registrar told me that they are not allowed to purge the voter lists anymore…as much as they would like to (SBE orders). I’ve been saying for quite some time that our current system is easily corrupted. Don’t be surprised if the illegals do vote."

Yikes! A little sunshine should bear down on this and expose it. A royal stink out to be made about this possibility. Where to begin?

It will either begin the police training OR hire and train 287(g) officers. It can't do both. They needed over $2 million for the first year. Also ADC did not get any money as they asked for.

They can't hire the 7 people (700k - 800k) and train over 500 with the $300 they got. Policman are expensive because they need lost of equipment the first year.

You have been grossly mislead.

That money will begin the police training. That is the important part of the legislation and what is most feared by the pro illegal lobby. Do they really care about cutting what few County services they can deny? Not really, no mortgage assistance or drug or alcohol counseling - not much. What concerns them is the street patrol officer inquiring about immigration status when probable cause exists. That training will start soon. That is what the pro illegal lobby didn't want to happen.
