Gay groups say defeating Marshall key to “progress”
By Greg L | 2 November 2007 | 13th HOD District | 13 Comments
The Washington Blade has decided that the 13th House District is something that the Washington, DC gay community needs to pay attention to, and has published an article in today’s edition entitled “Co-author of Va. marriage amendment faces re-election” that makes it very clear that if you’re part of the homosexual lobby, Bruce Roemmelt is your guy. I can’t say that this comes as a surprise.
In an election year with no major statewide races, voter turnout could be the key factor in determining whether a stridently anti-gay lawmaker retains his seat in the Virginia General Assembly in next week’s election.
“With a low turnout election, those who do turn out to vote will have twice the impact,” said Tom Osborne, treasurer of the Virginia Partisans Gay & Lesbian Democratic Club. “It depends on who is more likely to turn out, those who love Bob Marshall or those who hate him. The trend statewide this time around is Democrats are more motivated than Republicans.”
They might hope this is the case, but this almost entirely outside-the-district contingent clearly hasn’t spent much time in Prince William and Loudoun Counties this election season. While Bob Marshall has been a strong advocate of allowing the Commonwealth and it’s localities to take whatever legal measures possible to combat the unlawful presence of illegal aliens in the Commonwealth, Bruce Roemmelt is telling voters that his plan is to lobby Senator Webb on this issue if elected — something he has had, and will continue to have the power to do regardless of the outcome on November 6th. Seeing that Senator Webb voted against the interests of Virginians in a recent cloture vote on the DREAM Act, I’d say his track record here is a little underwhelming. Bob Marshall is clearly the superior candidate, and there’s little doubt that he will be re-elected with a comfortable margin next Tuesday.
For this narrow audience, the whole election is all about making “progress” on granting special rights to homosexuals. Last year we had somewhat of a referendum on this, and not only did the electorate overwhelmingly reject the notion that marriage in Virginia should be between anything other than one man and one woman, but Bruce Roemmelt definitely aligned himself to the wrong side. Bob Marshall co-authored this measure, and voters in this district supported it by about a twenty-five percentage point margin. Marshall is not going to be defeated because he authored a hugely popular ballot initiative.
The Virginia Partisans Gay & Lesbian Democratic Club might think Bruce Roemmelt is a great candidate with a real shot at this seat, but fortunately this Alexandria fringe element not only can’t vote in this election, they have no clue what’s going on in the 13th District.

“Progress” for what??? Go Marshall!
“Progress” for the far Left = “defining deviancy down.”
They rightfully seek a progressive,
To vanquish a man who’s oppressive,
His church guided views, may be good for the pews,
But to dictate God’s word is repressive!
Marshall is a loon. He should be defeated soundly. Marshall wants to be involved in your private life as a surrogate for the Catholic church. If you want your life to be controlled by the whims of a religion, then I would welcome you to the great islamic facist republic of Iran. What’s the dif?
The gay lobby made a play;
Alas, it did not go their way.
Marshall’s the man,
So much for their plan.
Time to go play with each other.
Patryot, if you don’t know the difference then I suggest you get a one way ticket to Iran so you can learn.
Ugh, Bob Marshall is an authentic buffoon (and I’m a Republican). The only people who support him are religious right nut jobs - and unfortunately enough exist in the 13th district to get him re-elected.
History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes.
Ah. . .gay bashing. . .so in-vouge. . .in the 19th century.
Bob Marshall, the guy who forced the BOS’s hand to keep adult day care in Manassas open for his father-in-law. Yeah, what a guy.
I recall him staying “women should be home caring for their families”. Isn’t it funny how things change.
Hope there are lots of gay folks in his district.
The Bob Marshall who wants to outlaw nearly all contraception by using backdoor legislation? That Bob Marshall? I am amazed that the voters in his district haven’t realized what he is really all about in this length of time.
I am thinking that there must be a bunch of liberals living in the 13th district because they apparently must want government involved in the most personal aspects of their lives.
Dolph now there you go again dragging your NOW/NARAL fear mongering out again. What I’m thinking is there must be a bunch of people living in the 13th district that want a Delegate that has the same values as themselves. Why else would he be re-elected for 16 years?
Go Marshall!
