"Gee, it’s nice to learn so much about FOX HUNTING on a a political thread. So, quick, all you hunters, get on your steeds, ride to the proper office, and get your licenses. We do not want any poachers riding around, do we?"

Krutex,

This has little to do with hunting, and everything to do with following the rule of law. How can we expect an aofficial to pass laws, if he breaks them. Kinda like the Fox watching the Hen House.

Krutis,

I expect as many political decisions have been made during fox hunts as have been made in dark, smoke filled rooms. Follow the money........

Unarmed fox hunters do not have to go through certification of competence in hunter education. I agree fox hunters are not listed under the exceptions. In many states, fox hunting is not classifed as hunting. Individual or group trapping permits are required but I am sure that any club sponsoring a fox hunt would have all permits covered.

I would say the VA law is very vague on this matter. Were it I, in the sense of fairness, I would retract that Mr. Day engaged in illegal activity since you do not know the degree to which he engaged in fox hunting. If he was ill, I expect he participated as a hilltopper.

On the other hand, I would agree with you that it is a pretty ridiculous statement for him to make in an robo-call. My main interest in the topic is from an ex-horsewoman's point of view. And no, I have never been a part of the fox hunt set. A few bets on the ponies at Charlestown is more my speed these days.

Maryland has provisions for a group license. Does Virginia allow this? How about the Hilltoppers? Must they have a license? I will check the reference out and respond accordingly. grin.

If you are engaged in the hunt, you need a license.

Reference is VA Code § 29.1-300. Code § 29.1-301 sets out exceptions to the requirement for having a license, and none of those would cover this instance.

A license is required to engage in fox hunting. William Day has engaged in behavior that is unlawful.

I will admit defeat on this one and stand corrected if someone can hook me up with the resources that state exactly who has to have a license in a fox hunt. I do not believe that some of the riders have to have a license, although the hunt staff who handle the fox probably do. Why would one need a license just to ride a horse?

Foxhunting in Virginia has a season like everything else and yes a license is required. If you don't have a license you can't hunt. Its amazing the PWC dems could not find a better candidate than folks like Day, Rishell, or Roemmelt. All these candidates are a joke!

The legal definition of hunting doesn't require that you take the animal, any more than doing "catch and release" doesn't remove the obligation of getting a fishing license.

The VDGIF website has details.

I have paid no interest in the Day/Lingamfelter campaign. Not my district. However, the fox hunting did interest me. Since when does one need a hunting license for fox hunting? The fox is rarely killed, in this country at least. It is more a game of cat and mouse.

The riders in the fox hunt are generally not armed and the purpose is more about horsemanship than actual hunting. Perhaps Mr. Day is a poacher. I would have no way to know if he is or isn't. However, he isn't one because of fox hunting.
