Gerry Connolly: “I run the NAACP!”

By Greg L | 3 November 2007 | Gerry Connolly, Fairfax County | 22 Comments

Mason Conservative has a story up this evening about Gerry Connolly apparently crashing a candidate forum held by the Fairfax NAACP and shouting “you don’t run the NAACP!” when he tried to fill in for Ray Morrough, who is running against Patrick McDade for Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney.  If Connolly has managed to alienate himself from minority voters in Fairfax County, this is going to have a significant impact on his contest with Gary Baise to retain the BOCS Chairman position.

In a “wish Youtube was there” moment, it seems Gerry Connolly absolutely lost his ever-loving mind at an NAACP candidate forum last night. Patrick McDade spoke in what was apparently a very subdued speech that didn’t mention his opponents name one bit. Gerry Connolly then, from what I heard, jumped up and screamed “I’m speaking for Ray Morrogh!” Connolly then cannonballed to the moderators and grabed the mic despite the hoots and pleas of the audience. Patrick then spoke up and said something to the effect that Morrogh had his chance to respond and he chose not to attend the event. At this point, Boss Tweed Connolly apparently shouted at the top of his lungs, “Sit down, this is none of your business. Sit down.” Patrick then said that it was his business, since Morrogh was his opponent. Gerry responded, “You sit down! You don’t run the NAACP! This is none of your business!” He then apparently started a rambling and factually incorrect (shocker!) speech for Ray Ray. And apparently, while Connolly blathered on, people filed out until there was only about a dozen left when Gerry finished. Connolly was scheduled to give the dinner address but bailed. Rumor was he was asked not to speak.

Please tell me that Patrick McDade’s campaign was shooting video at this event.

What a freaking a-hole! How in the world anyone in Fairfax County, Democrats included, could vote for this guy is beyond all comprehension.

BVBL… you’re a great blogger… one of the better conservative ones on the Internet (It’s why even as a Democrat, I’ve donated to you)… but in this case, I disagree with you… it’s too late for Connolly to mess this thing up now… I mean, there really are no moderate Republicans in Virginia (specifcally, Farirfax)… Wolf was the last of a dead breed… so you vote for Connolly or you don’t vote in Fairfax… let’s face it… there’s a weak GOP bench in Fairfax… that much is known.

Races have turned late in the game over something like this before. If the NAACP stands up for itself here, and that became known, this could swing a close election. I’m not sure this one is close at this point, as my insight in Fairfax is somewhat limited.

It all depends on how close this race is. Of course the WashPo won’t cover this, as they seem to have a crush on Connolly, but if they did, it could swing a few percentage points.

Did somebody say Wolf was dead? Why wasn’t this reported? Didn’t anyone notice?

So is this making the radio, TV, or print media? Did the NAACP endorse Connolly, and if so, would they withdraw their endorsement over this incident? Does the same go for the Washington Post? Most importantly, doesn’t this speak volumes (pardon the pun) about how the Democrats take the black vote for granted?

Sent a fax to Wolf last week asking where he stood and was he a co-sponsor of the SAVE ACT. No response. Guess that shows where he stands.

Anybody out there, and that was there last night? I’d like to hear more on the evening’s entertainment.

The NAACP doesn’t endorse candidates for office…

What a surprise, the Post didn’t mention this in today’s edition even though they had an article on the Morrough-McDade race. Absolutely pitiful. I absolutely guarantee you, if this had been Baise doing it this would be on the front freaking page. I ask again, how could anyone vote Connolly? And how in the world could the press be in his pocket?

Perhaps it didn’t happen quite the way it’s being purported to have happened…

Well, here’s a link to my post at TC with Patrick McDade’s first hand account:

Connolly is an out of control ego-maniac.

At McDade’s request the email was taken down, but it clearly confirms Mason Conservative’s account of what transpired.

If McDade requests the email taken down, it must have been over the edge. He doesn’t want to have anything to do with it.

Loudoun Insider states that it is “Patrick McDade’s firsthand account”. If that were the case, why do you suppose he wants it taken down? I don’t believe that any candidate on the eve of election would want to be connected to such tripe. In decent society one doesn’t, or shouldn’t, get elected by shoveling manure over one’s opponent.

Well, it makes perfect sense to me that a candidate, Patrick McDade in this case, may have given an accurate account of what happened in an E-Mail but for whatever reason (and integrity as a candidate not to make fun of another would be a good one) didn’t want it posted publicy. I can understand that motivation for having the E-Mail taken down perfectly well.

I actually spoke to a friend who was actually there in the room. The incident sounded quite bizarre, indeed. She had no explanation for it. What I find interesting is that McDade attended, but Morrogh did not. I cannot figure out why Morrogh did not. Is Morrogh avoiding McDade, the NAACP, or both? LOL! Or maybe the NAACP did not invite him, because of past disagreement with Morrogh’s predecessor, Horan?

I was at the gym today and a Connolly ad came up on the TV. A fellow club member (who is a middle-aged African American businessman) blurted out, “Change the channel or Gerry will start screaming at us again!” I almost dropped the weight stack. It was so funny. I’m glad we can have a laugh at Boss Gerry’s expense.

This is one of those moments you wish someone had taped. It would have been a true You Tube moment.

Krutis, I have absolutely no reason whatsoever to doubt Patrick McDade’s account of the evening in question. It is also perfectly plausible given Connolly’s past actions. I just watched Connolly’s horrible TV commercial again with my wife, who stated how creepy Connolly is. I couldn’t agree more.

    Red Woman,
Thank you for sharing your friend’s thoughts.
I love the “Change the channel or Gerry will start screaming at us again”, and don’t you know a Gerry ad just came on the TV(he seemed calm for the ad). Shame on Connolly once again.

Nah, the ad was in English! It was funny.

But, yup, I got a similar, but more entertaining, version of the story that Loudoun Insider and Mason Conservative had posted from my friend. She thought Gerry Connolly was going to stroke out, he was so agitated. She said he “literally snatched” the microphone from Patrick McDade. People were shouting. The moderator was angry. Patrick McDade was apparently in the middle of explaining that the Commonwealth Attorney should be answerable to the public. A novel concept.

Methinks Gerry Connolly objects to being answerable to the public. It seems to be what set him off. Oddly, his rant was not about how great Raymond Morrogh is, but how great Horan was.

But do you know what really annoys me? People who actually have pointed out Connolly’s foibles in the past, like Raising Kaine (which tends to be in line with my own politics), ignored this entirely, even though the incident has shown up on just about every blog. They’d rather cover someone cutting “NO” into Janet Oleszek’s sign than the Chairman of the BOS and possible Congressional candidate ranting at a roomful of people. I used to enjoy reading Raising Kaine, but now I see that they are not progressives over there. They are just party hacks. They are progressive wannabes. They don’t want change, they just want to think they do. I’m switching my vote to Gary Baise. He doesn’t seem to be stoked about himself. He attended one of our community meetings awhile ago and did a new and interesting thing; he listened. He barely campaigned. He was like a regular guy.

Hey, but where is the Post? This is fun pre-election news! DC needs a paper like the NY Post to run a front page photo of this sort of campaign entertainment!

    KMyles,

Thanks for your answer. I honestly didn’t know how the process worked with the NAACP.

    Red Woman,

I appreciate your comments. It would be interesting how widespread the news of this incident goes, and whether it sways any votes.

Red Woman - OMG I am sooo with you on that one!!!! Maybe we should contact “The City Paper” and see if THEY would be willing to do anything about it

The NAACP doesn’t make endorsements and that forum was a nonpartisan affair.
