Democrats Are Going To Solve All Our Problems?
By Greg L | 8 November 2007 | Virginia Senate | 52 Comments
The Manassas Urinal-Massager is trumpeting that Democrat control of the Senate is going to help Northern Virginia, and Prince William County in particular. Their uncritical parroting of the Democratic Party line fails to take into account everything that we’ve seen in the past from Northern Virginia Democrats and Chuck Colgan in particular. Anyone holding their breath that the transportation funding issue is going to get magically resolved just because Colgan will probably end up chairing the Senate Finance Committee is going to be turning purple pretty quickly.
Colgan has been pretty upfront about his belief that the current transportation funding formula for Northern Virginia is fair, despite the fact it only returns less than fifty cents for each dollar to Northern Virginia. The way the legislature has addressed this in the past is with earmarks — and Colgan is a big-time proponent of these — to make up in part for huge discrepancies in statewide transportation funding. These purely political moves as a band-aid to transportation spending shortfalls in the area haven’t cleaned up the mess we have on 66 and 495, and only allowed problems on secondary roads to interminably fester. Instead of these earmarks being used to attack prioritized safety and congestion problems, they’re used almost exclusively to fund high-visibility projects so legislators can talk about “bringing home the bacon.”
If there’s no change to the funding formula, and most large projects in Northern Virginia are funded through politically-motivated earmarks, there’s going to be little if any meaningful transportation improvements. This funding system, which Democrats such as Colgan has defended as somehow being fair, is a big reason we’re in the mess we’re in now. Absent any substantial proposals to reform the system, rhetoric about how things are supposedly going to get better is nothing but baloney.
The second major fallacy here is a belief that Prince William is somehow going to benefit here. If Northern Virginia Democrats are going to somehow set the agenda for transportation projects (earmarks), you can bet that Prince William will be getting nothing more than the leftovers after Fairfax and Arlington Counties run out of things to spend money on. HB3202, as flawed as it was, dictated in its original version that money raised in a locality would be spent in that locality. The measure as passed requires a two-thirds vote by NVTA members in order to fund any project, and while it says that the spending must proportionally benefit all localities in the NVTA, the definition of what a “benefit” is is sorely lacking. Under this scheme, the NVTA can argue that a project in Fairfax County will benefit Prince William commuters, and consider that spending a “benefit” to Prince William County residents despite having done nothing in Prince William.
I’m willing to be pleasantly surprised here, but past experience shouldn’t give anyone confidence that by simply having a bunch of Democrat Senators we’re going to suddenly experience dramatic transportation improvements. I don’t mind Democrats setting expectations here that they’re not going to meet, but it’s pathetic to see the local media be so enthusiastically complicit in this.

One of the best things that could happen to help solve the “transportation problem” would be to lighten the traffic volume throughout the entire DC area by denying employment to illegal immigrants. Wonder how much less road maintenance would be needed if they werent a factor?
You are truly an incredibly smart guy. I don’t know your background but your analysis of the election numbers is excellent. However claiming Colgan has not delivered on transportation is nothing short of ignorance. Look around Roads are under construction in every part of the County. In recent years 234 got 4 lanes from Manassas to 95, 66 is getting four lanes to Gainesville. 28 just completed 4 lanes near Linton Hall (Yes, I like that Bridge), the Rt 234 Bypass and Prince William Parkway all on his watch.
It’s your world we are just living in it, but get real.
By the way you missed the part of the article you need to focus on.
Sen. John Warner, R-Va., said on Wednesday that the Republicans’ loss of the Senate majority was due in part to the narrow direction the party has taken in recent years, according to the Associated Press.
Virginia’s senior senator said the GOP had drifted from the “time-honored principle of the ‘big tent’ party.”
“The guiding standard of the party was that it made room for a great number of values and views, and that moderation and willingness to compromise would be respected,” Warner said in an e-mailed statement.
Remember Reagan Democrats- Yes even Ronnie got it..
At the same time we’ve been struggling for years to fix the problems on 66 and 495, VDOT spent several hundred million dollars to build a multi-lane bypass around Danville. Meanwhile PWC has had to bond out its own road projects which should have been funded through the transportation funding formula had that plan been anywhere near fair. The strategy here seems to be to starve NOVA of transportation dollars through the funding formula, and then come riding to the rescue with a small portion of the revenues we’ve been robbed of under the guise that these crumbs represent our legislators working for us.
It’s a scam designed to protect incumbents. Meanwhile, Route 28 is a mess, 234 is bumper-to-bumper, we haven’t bypassed the battlefield, and Gainesville is still gridlocked.
This is the same scheme Colgan abuses with his earmarks to non-state entities, something that violates the Virginia constitution, but a favorite way for Colgan to deliver taxpayer-funded largess on his favorite charities and buy votes.
As for Senator Warner, I have no use for that embarrassment. His standing with Pelosi, Feinstein and Clinton on gun control, his inconsistent record on illegal aliens, and his affinity for tax hikes and spending increases makes me wonder why this guy ever considered himself a Republican. He demonstrates no dedication to principle whatsoever. If John Warner is complaining, we must be doing something right, because so much of what he has stood for is so terribly wrong.
At least he is retiring. That ought to dramatically improve the safety and virtue of untold numbers of young female senate staffers.
Billyboy,
Look carefully and you will see that many road projects in Prince William County are actually funded by the sale of bonds, not by large expenditures of VDOT. Sudley Manor Drive, Linton Hall Road, Ashton Avenue, James Madison Highway, and Prince William County Parkway are among the many road projects funded by the sale of bonds, not by Richmond. Route 234 from Manassas to Montclair was funded by VDOT. But much of Minnieville and Spriggs Improvements were and are funded by local funds. Cardinal Drive, too.
http://www.pwcgov.org/default.aspx?topic=010087001090003988
In 2006, Prince William County residents approved a $300,000,000.00 road bond. Currently some of this money is being utilized for engineering on the widening of Rte. 28 south from Linton Hall to the Fauquier Co. line.
And in Fairfax and Loudoun, all of the new Interchanges on Rte. 28 from I-66 to Rte. 7 are being privately funded and paid for by bonds backed by special taxing districts.
http://www.28freeway.com/
The new “Hot Lanes” project on I-495 will be privately funded and paid for by tolls.
http://www.virginiahotlanes.com/
Meanwhile, Richmond boasts a lightly trafficked I-295 bypass, and Southwestern Virginia trumpets beautiful but near-empty, four lane roads to nowhere.
Actual VDOT money into Northern Virginia over the last five years has been but a trickle compared to local and private bonding of road projects. We are not in any way getting our fair share of state tax revenues.
Such is the reasoning behind the new Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance (NVTA), now a body with actual taxing power. The courts said so!
http://www.nvta.org/
If Mr. Colgan had truly been delivering on his promises, much of this additional spending by Northern Virginians would not have been necessary.
Without Greg L and John Stirrup’s coattails, Corey would have been a lame duck. Corey owes you GL.
I do agree with Paul Nichols about immediate deportation of criminal illegal aliens. I don’t want my tax dollars going to feed and house them. Get em the hell out of here!
No, Democrats won’t solve all the problems in Virginia, but they can’t do much worse than the Republicans have been doing. Republicans didn’t do a damn thing about traffic, illegal immigration, etc.
The road situation needs to be blamed on the uncontrolled growth in Prince William County. The BOCS did nothing to stop the building, building, building. Just look at the Linton Hall Rd, Vint Hill Rd, Rt 28 and so on. Maybe they should have been thinking about the impact of the traffic when approving all those new subdivisions being built. Don’t blame the Democrats. Blame the local officials.
Can’t get any worse than having downstate Rs building 4 lane highways around Lynchburg, Roanoke, Richmond, etc. If you prefer that way of funding transpo maybe you should move to Southside Greg.

Can we get some original dumb ideas? Ones
like this are getting awfully stale.
For the 100th time — if you assume the
illegal criminal’s country of origin is going to lock him/her
up upon their return for a crime in the USA — you
are WRONG. Most of them will get off the plane or
bus and just go home.
Think about for a minute. Go north and rob
a bank - best case is you get mucho $$ - worse case
you are given room and board for a few months and
then given a free ticket home.
“Get em the hell out of here!” - captured
illegal alien criminals couldn’t agree with you more.
Ever wonder why we can’t seem to get our federal officials to secure our border? Ever wonder why we continue to face an unrelenting push for amnesty to those who violated our immigration laws and preferential admission to our colleges and universities? This may help in that understanding….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T74VA3xU0EA
Freedom,
I have been asking about this for a while now, it make a lot of sense doesn’t it?… but STILL searching…
Here is so more info.

Billy Boy,
I would still like to see Senator Colgan come door to door in our neighborhood. In fact, I’ll repeat:
Senator Colgan,
This is an open invitation to come to your old neigborhood in Westgate. We would like to show you some of the problems we are experiencing. Jeanette Rishell came door to door in our neighborhood. You can too. We just live a block or two from your old house. If you can run up and down the steps with kids you can surely come door to door in our neighborhood. Like I said Ms. Rishell was able to do it. You can too. It would go a long way in establishing a relationship with your old neighborhood.
Greg,
Am seeing a theory on other blogs that
Herr Kopko gave the Dems the Senate by pushing
Faisal Gill over Julie Lucas in a tainted mass meeting
and that Gill’s poor numbers for the House in this
week’s general election helped to pull down Jay O’Brien’s
Senate numbers. Does the head of the Republican
Party in PWC deserve a “Game Ball” from the Dems
for helping them to regain the Virginia Senate?
Agreed. Don’t hold your breath though. The old guy is probably too afraid to step foot in this area now. These illegal alien supporters don’t care about us or our problems. They all live in nice, clean areas where people have pride in their neighborhoods. They don’t have to live in neighborhoods like ours that were converted into barrio style day laborer bunkhouses. The only way illegal immigration gets solved short of pitch fork wielding affected citizens is if illegal aliens start moving into their nice neighborhoods and trashing them up. I don’t ever see that happening though. I can’t say I am any different though. If my neighborhood and town weren’t overrun by them and wasn’t the illegal alien sanctuary city of Northern Virginia then I probably wouldn’t care as much as I do either. If you don’t have to live around it and be subjected to its effects on a daily basis then it really won’t be that important to you. Out of sight out of mind.
You young people are awfully quick with your demands for an 85 year old gentleman to go door-to-door in your neighborhood. I’m only 56 and there is absolutely no way that I would subject myself to that any longer. May I suggest that you offer a more reasonable “demand”…perhaps a town meeting at Stonewall Middle School? Sen. Colgan was the first elected official in Prince William County to conduct regular town meetings, if my recollection is correct, some decades ago. I would think that would be a very productive means by which you can confront him with your concerns.
ATTENTION: Possible Colgan sighting: Coverstone 7-11. Elderly “Spanish” speaking gentleman shaking hands, repeating over and over, “much is grasses, much is grasses.”
AWC: Get off the computer and on to the sidewalk.
I’ve done door-to-door on numerous occasions through more campaigns than I care to count FIM. I sacrificed my health at the alter of politics over a period of nearly 40 years. I suggest you take your rude remark to heart and let me know, in twenty years or so, how it works for you.
AWC,
I would say you have paid your dues.
FIM,
Besame el culo while you are out there doing your sightings and your grass thing at 7-11. Sounds like you might fit right in.

Don’t even bother with him/her/it. Just look at the name - it tells us all we need to know….
Greg -
Finally some common ground. PWC should not be funding it’s own transportation program. Hear the giant sucking sound…..
Without that drain on county resources the current real estate problem would not be as tremendous an issue. The problem is with the debt capacity.
One reason I would not vote for Mr. Stewart. Wasn’t for anyone else …… but wasn’t for this either.
This is one of the issues I’ve been trying to get people to include in their perspectives.
Thanks redawn,
The more I see about the NAU, the more worried I become…I am absolutely astounded! We see lots of crazy things on the internet…and a lot of the things we see and hear are based upon individual/organizational biases…so a person must be careful.
However, I have been trying for so long to understand why, as we struggle with the issue of illegal immigration at the local level, we can’t seem to get anything really moving at the federal level to secure our border.
While we hear that immigration is a federal responsibility and therefore what we do at the local level is meaningless, I’ve felt that the PWC Resolution will “send a signal” as to what we want and what we don’t want…and that we want the flippin’ border secured.
If all that I’m seeing now about the NAU and the Amero is true and legitimate, “sending a signal” just won’t work — the signal will simply be ignored…and the efforts of HSM and the PWCBOCS are a lot like we, the ignorant ones, are merely “whistling in the breeze,” because there’s a whole different and opposite plan being silently pushed by the other side.
Isn’t it amazing that we don’t hear about this from either Republican OR Democrat elected officials??….or have I just not picked up on it?
Redawn -
Thanks for posting the video. I had no idea, other than the fact that the feds weren’t doing squat to fight this invasion …. well, now I know why.
Very scary indeed.
AWCheney was organizing huge door-to-door operations (and doing the work herself) in campaigns across Prince William County in the years when we finally started building a strong GOP in Prince William.
She was the “go-to” person for voluneers and considered such a leader on precinct operations that other local GOP Committees across Virginia sought her advice and guidance on how to do it as successfully as it was working in Prince William County.
By the way, I know firsthand that this was the case. My High School in Nokesville had a Teen Age Republican club with over 100 members (which she founded and served as advisor) was a major part of the pool of volunteers that was called upon to be the door-to-door army wherever needed in Prince William County. Many of these volunteers stayed active and became leaders in GOP/Conservative causes and organizations in future years.
AWCheney,
When I made that request, I was referring to Colgan’s ad showing him in a sweat suit running with school kids. If he wants to portray himself as vigorous, he can surely walk in my neighborhood. It is flat and I’ve seen plenty of seniors around his age walk it. Forget about Stonewall Middle. He was asked to come there for a candidates forum and didn’t show his face. If he was serious about what is going on in his old neighborhood then he would come door to door. Rishell says she is a grandma and she looks it. She came door to door. By the way I’m not a spring chicken either and I can still manage to walk a sidewalk. Sorry, I’m not letting Colgan off this easy. If he is serious about this neighborhood he can come here and visit. He can use his car and then stop at a few homes. I’m sure he can afford the gas. He sure can afford the fancy car he has.
Billy Boy
It was Prince William County that built Prince William Parkway and many other roads. It didn’t come from the State, altho they still did not pass back to us our fair share. Instead they built 4/6 lanes in the Southern part that has very little traffic going to the South West.
Go back and check all the Road Bonds we were asked to vote for and they all passed ,as the County had our money to promote and urge voters to vote yes.
Where is this going to lead??? You bet we will have more taxes to pay if we don’t get rid of the Liberals.
Do your home work before praising the State.

Before everybody starts saying “we’re doomed” because the Democrats are taking over the Chairmanships of the State Senate Committees, let’s take a deep breath and logically look at what all these “changes” will entail.
First of all, we have re-elected our very own Senator Chuck Colgan who is the most senior member of the Senate and will have his choice to chair any one of the 3 committees on which he is the senior member. Of course he will take Finance, since that is widely regarded as the most powerful post in the General Assembly. He takes the reins from Chichester and I dare say that Chuck Colgan is a little more open to reasonable discussion on all the tax and spend proposals that are on the table. Let’s not forget, he’s OUR Senator and we are his constituents. He is now in the perfect position to help Prince William’s transportation problems and leave his lasting legacy.
Secondly, as the new Majority leader, Dick Saslaw has a choice of committee chairmanships as well, but as floor leader he must take over the Rules Committee from Tommy Norment as his major committee chairmanship. So, nothing changes there since he pretty much conducted the train before anyway.
Now, that leaves our neighbor just to the south, Edd Houck of Spotsylvania who has his choice of the three remaining key committees – Education and Health, General Laws, and Transportation. While not a close election this last time it was his closest yet. He heard loud and clear from his district that they are fed up with the transportation mess as well. He was able to run on finally being in a position to get a key post to work effectively on the problem. So, it’s a no-brainer he takes Marty Williams’ old spot as Transportation Chairman. So, in my eyes, I say Prince William County gets a friend rather than foe in that regard. If any body understands the transportation problems faced by the outlying DC bedroom communities, it is Edd Houck who represents Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg, and Culpeper. If you don’t know Edd, he is a really nice guy who prides himself with working across the aisle to get things done and he tends to be moderate to conservative on issues that matter most. I’m thinking we have a friend here on immigration issues as well. Part of the reason he was taken out of the floor leadership for the Senate Dems was that he liked to work with the Republicans to solve problems and just didn’t have enough of a partisan edge.
Here’s also a little side benefit. If Houck takes Transportation then Louise Lucas will most likely get Education and Health. She is pro-life folks. She helped save the partial birth abortion ban bill and fell to the right of the former Chair Russ Potts on A LOT of pro-family legislation.
So, fear not folks. It’s not any worse with the change in power and I can see in many respects it might even get better. The only downside for the GOP is redistricting, but we just have to dig in and win more House seats and of course the Governorship in 2009 and everything will be just fine.
Patty, Chuck Colgan didn’t get to be a multi-millionaire and a successful elected official for these many years because he was stupid and unable to efficiently utilize his time and energy. You must have read the posts yourself from people who confirmed that he did, indeed, go door-to-door in that neighborhood during the campaign. Just because he didn’t come to your door (Did you by any chance have a FitzSimmonds’ sign in your yard?*) doesn’t mean that he wasn’t going around. Also, you weren’t the only one demanding that he continue his door-to-door after the election, which even a very young elected official would consider an inefficient and wasteful use of his time and energy. It’s an unreasonable request.
Now, on the other hand, requesting that he have a town meeting in your neighborhood on the illegal alien issue is not only reasonable, but a request that I’m quite certain Senator Colgan would be more than happy to accommodate. Rather than continuing to attempt to vilify him, why don’t you reach out to him as your re-elected State Senator and ask for his attention to and assistance with this issue. A town meeting would be a good start.
*It is considered very bad form for a candidate to “go behind the sign” of his opposition (translated, knock on the door and solicit the vote of someone who has an opposition yard sign in their yard).
AWCheney,
I’m not villifying him. My neighbors can attest to the fact that he did NOT appear in this neighborhood. And they know him better than you. He was invited to come to Stonewall Middle and he refused to come. Those are facts!!! I’m sure Greg will tell you, if you don’t believe me. By the way I didn’t have my signs up when the campaign started. As I said before, Jeanette Rishell came to my house. If you want to continue to attack me for telling the truth then you have a problem. BYE
Patty,
If he did come to your house you would likely shot him and say he tried to break in. You want to scream at him and act like a maniac, it is not going to happen. At his age and having been elected 9 times by the MAJORITY, he should not have to take crap from people like you.
As for the rest of you, one road I mentioned was funded by the County and that was the Parkway, excuse me, point still stands.
I think Republican cans simply want to be unhappy.
Greg,
Your attacks of John Warner for being mainstream are exactly what will
make Mark Warner his replacement. You seem to hate everyone who fails to agree with you completely. At the end of the day, you and Jim Gilmore wil be standing alone and the party will have failed.
…but redawn, if all this NAU stuff were a Republican scheme, wouldn’t you think those good Democrats would pick up on it and “save the day” from those rascally Republicans? …or, conversely, if it were a Democrat plan wouldn’t you expect the Republicans to “save us” from those pesky Dems, tryin’ to do it to us again???
The point being, and a most disturbing point is that the NAU, the Amero, and the NAFTA Super-highway initiatives are being orchestrated across party lines and is the goal of both parties at the national level.
The NAU, Amero, and the NAFTA super-highway are what happen when we forget to guard our freedoms and give too much power to government.
Freedom,
I am with you and asking questions. I hope we all can get some answers, something is going on…
NO argument here
Politics is about compromise. People who are successful politicians have mastered the art of compromise. That’s why folks like Chuck Colgan continues to win in a “Republican” (or, at least it used to be) County. That’s how Corey Stewart got the BOD to agree on a compromise resolution.
The alternative is to be marginalized for a lack of flexibility. Unfortunately, we appear to have forgotten what it means to be the “loyal opposition”, or people who may disagree in certain areas but are pragmatic and come together “somewhere in the middle” to keep the Government moving.
When the election is over, so is the retoric. People “kiss and make up” (I assume you heard Corey Steward’s kind words about Padnik after the election, he took the high ground of a professional politician) and get down to the business of Governance.
When I write to Tom Davis, John Warner and/or Jim Webb to express my concerns on issues, e.g., illegal immigration, amnesty, and the DREAM act… and I’ve always been polite, courteous and respectful, never a screaming banshee or mean spirited…I receive a response similar to: “I appreciate hearing your views and I’ll certainly consider your views as I review legislation.” Sigh….and I’m not talking about some way-out cuckoo idea that only one in a million Americans would support, either.
I’m really getting tired of being “blown off.” Some will say, “If you don’t like it, vote them out of office.” Well, that’s certainly the school-book answer, however, vote them out of office and their replacements (who as candidates promised the moon and the stars above) become much more “knowing” after election day and soon forget that they too were once commoners.

AWCheney on 9 Nov 2007 at 12:43 pm:
I had a Colgan sign in my yard and live not too far away from his “old” neighborhood. He did not come by my house although a young man (19-20 years old) did ring the bell, said he represented Sen. Colgan and wanted to know what issues were most important to me. Told him illegal aliens taking over the neighborhood and their flop houses was my main concern. Visit lasted all of about 15 seconds..
Patty,
AWCheney made a very good suggestion and brought up very well thought out points about Colgan. I don’t see where she was attacking you. Seriously, this is not the approach to take when asking for help or to be heard ( other neighbors agree) we all must work together
I live in West Gate, and i know some people that work down in Richmond. I asked them if Colgan was going to keep his promise and introduce some bills on immigration. They said he is already working on it, and will….
West Gater,
They way I look at it and you just confirmed it, he has been made aware and would be a fool to let his career end on a BAD note.
I would think (HOPE) we will get EXTRA attention to not letting this happen.
Freedom,
(Re: your comment at 4:57)
Yes those generic, boiler plate, waste of paper responses get very old. Another way of saying “stuff (the envelope) it”?!
I am interested in hearing what legislation everyone wants Senator Colgan to introduce. It is one thing to say do ’something,’ and quite another to propose specifics. Collective thoughts and ideas?
Patty seems to have checked out for the evening but I did want to mention something as she question Chuck Colgan’s age and physical abililty. Colgan actually challenged Fatzsimmonds to a 100 yard dash and Bob refused. If Bob and Patty thing age is such an issue, that would have proven it.
Chuck is in much better shape at 81 then Bob is a 56.
Colgan already proposed Electronic Verification for employers which when fully implemented would require all employers to verify a new hires employment eligibility.
He has also said he would ask the Republican Attorney General to seek compensation from the Feds to recover cost associated with illegal immigration.
Billyboy & Patty,
How about the two of you have a 100 yard dash on the track of Stonewall Middle?-lol
Billlyboy,
That’s good news you gave at 10:59. Thanks for keeping us up to date.
Colgan Fights! Seriously folks…these spots were great. Fun in tone, even tongue in cheek, but definitely got the point across that the “out-of-shape” Fitzsimmonds was being ridiculous with the too old or fit for office attack. Here they are again for your viewing pleasure…love these spots.

I’m sure what has happened in Oklahoma started with just one elected official who started the ball rolling. Colgan can just pick and choose from that bill, since it seems to have withstood a legal challenge.
Just curious…rumor is that Colgan’s kids shipped his Hispanic girlfriend out to a health spa to get her out of the way until after
the election and only brought her back in time to congratulate him on his win…big photo op for the JM. If this is true, I think
it lends a bit of humor to the picture. Anyone have a comment?
Greg just got here from Canada… I mean, where does he get off talking about problems that have existed for “many years.” He was still in Canadian Evangelical Christian kindergarten (home “schooled”, no doubt) when the rest of were working to advance the prospects of our town and our county.
[Ed note: Making stuff up like this is pretty pathetic. I was born in the U.S. of A., in case that was important to this discussion, which it isn’t.]
