1st CD Convention Tomorrow

By Greg L | 9 November 2007 | Virginia Politics, US Congress | 5 Comments

Tomorrow is the Republican Convention for the First Congressional District, where a field of eleven candidates are jostling for the opportunity to face either Democrat Philip Forgit or Ted Hontz for the opportunity to succeed Joann Davis.  This is going to be a race between Virginia Club For Growth Paul Jost, Chuck Davis, the husband of the late Joanne Davis, and Delegate Robert Whittman.  Jost is in the strongest position to get delegates to this convention, Davis is the sentimental choice, and Whittman is coming off an election cycle where he had no opponent and was left with a substantial campaign finance account with which he could compete.  The other candidates, many of whom have a lot to offer, are just getting swamped here.

The odds-on favorite here is Paul Jost.  At some point tomorrow we’ll see who put together the best ground game and find out who will be the Republican nominee in the special election that will be held in about a month.  Whoever demonstrates that they could put together an effective campaign organization for a quick convention in a crowded field will definitely prove himself capable of pulling out a win in December.

Just remember Whittman cannot use any of his state funds for this race because of Federal campaign finance laws. I think the favorite going into the day is Chuck Davis with Jost a very close second but anything is possible at the end of the day.

It’s Wittman - no “h”. He’s the best campaigner out of the bunch.

Also, the late Congresswoman’s name is Jo Ann, not Joanne.

If that mook Wittman wins, I might have to change my blog title to “Not Robert Wittman”.

What has this guy ever done? (Besides get local party officials that ran a crooked mass meeting to support him?)
