Chris Core Blinks

By Greg L | 14 November 2007 | Illegal Aliens | 48 Comments

Columnist Gary Jacobsen, who filed a lawsuit against Chris Core for telling WMAL listeners that Jacobsen almost certainly hired illegal aliens to paint his house as a result of a column he wrote in the Washington Post, has apparently settled his lawsuit for an undisclosed amount.  It would have been interesting if this had gone to trial and Chris Core could have forced discovery.  I’m pretty disappointed here.

Jacobsen is a knucklehead who sorely deserved a lesson.  Rewarding idiots like this only encourages more idiocy.  Chris, you’re better than this.

It looks like this case was filed in Small Claims Division in D.C. Superior Court, there is no discovery permitted.

Obviously if he settled then he didn’t know for sure and didn’t want to take the chance. There would have been no way to prove it either way and the judge would have went with the plaintiff in that case.

And one other point, sometimes it’s just smarter to settle than spend the time and money fighting nonsense like this.

The legal fees to defend this thing probably would’ve been more than the $ 5,000 that was being sued for and, at some point, it just doesn’t make sense.

    Park’d:

If there really was “no way to prove it either way”, then the Plaintiff should lose because it’s his burden to prove his case.

Perhaps WMAL didn’t want to entertain or feed into any special group at this point. These are the BIG boys now.

probably why jacobsen sued in small claims I’m sure, so core could not force discovery. who knows what happened, I guess an NDA was signed so we may never know.

Okay, Gary Jacobsen sued Chris Core, presumably for defamation of character or something similar. Being well aware of his character’s worth, he chose small claims court. Core settled out of court, and out of court settlements often are for less than the amount of the suit. The saddest part of the out of court settlement is that the public will not see how little Jacobsen’s character is worth.

It was probably not even Chris Core’s decision to settle in the first place. I expect that the station handled everything, and he didn’t have a choice.

I’ve got a conceptual problem with this lawsuit.

How does Gary Jacobsen prove damage to HIS reputation, such as it is?

    AWC,

You are more than likely correct.

    To all,

I would be extremely careful what I posted here on this topic. Big brother is watching.

There are those out there in la-la land who spoil for a fight and who attempt to drag others out, for blood sport. Do not allow yourself to be dragged or be lulled in to a false sense of security that you are anonymous. No one is truly anonymous if someone decides you shouldn’t be or wants to make a point.

BTW, I agree with Doug on this point. You have to figure that Core and WMAL had top-flight legal representation, which means that 10-15 hours of legal work on the suit (at D.C. rates) would have exceeded the damages sought.

park’d - 7:42 “would have GONE with the plaintiff”.

It seems Greg L is always looking for fight of some kind. Aren’t you glad we didn’t have to spend money on drawn-out court hearings? Jacobsen is a show-off, and I can’t understand how his letter got in the paper. It was a big fat ZERO. A guy like Core most likely has bigger things to cope with. Who knows, he might have gotten nailed for a LARGE sum. Jacobsen wasn’t worth it. You’ve got to pick you fights!

Once again Greg makes another depraved assault on the principle of “innocent until proven guilty”. Of course he undoubtedly would want this principle to be upheld for himself and his family members.

Can’t anyone see how people like Greg LeDick keep encouraging the sacrifice of liberty for the sake of security?

Just because they settled does not necessarily mean any money changed hands. He may have merely promised never to mention the guy’s name again on air. We’ll never know, because they kept it confidential.

NJH could, of course, be right. That’s why I hate these kinds of settlement: Jacobsen gets to play the victim for having filed it (a front-page story for a guy usually relegated to the opinion page, and laughed at for his moonbattery), while the impression is left, after it is over, that Core somehow surrendered.

would be better to let this one slide, why fight the small ones. 5K is a small sum compared to some other rediculous suits we’ve seen (remember the judge suing the dry cleaners over his pants?) so this may have been a good one to let go.

So now a bunch of other knuckleheads have a great new idea. Write a outrageously provocative column that is sure to incite talk radio, but leave the tiniest bit of wiggle room, then sue for defamation of character.

Anon 12:45, while Jacobsen writes a column for the Daily Fishwrap … er, Potomac News, the piece at issue was in the Washington Post (back page of the Sunday Outlook section), so Krusty is correct to wonder how it got in the WaPo.

It would be interesting to find out if it were something that the local paper refused to publish (perhaps for the very reasons why Core criticized it), and whether Jacobsen then farmed out to the WaPo.

Certainly, when I was writing for the Pot. News, I would have given it right of first refusal on any political column that I write. Indeed, it used to be that the paper refused to publish letters that had been submitted to another journal.

Going to stay in a nice hotel with child care and a lift….and enjoy a place where the illegals dont roam all over the damn place with impunity. That in and of itself will be awesome, I cant wait to order dinner and get someone who speaks english. I dont agree with Tancredo on a few things, but I sure do agree with his illegal immigration stance.

josh - When you get back from your stay in the nice hotel in Colorado, give us a report on who made the beds and washed the dishes. What makes you think all the worker bees in Colorado speak English? Do all Colorado hotels check their employees’ documents? “illigals don’t roam all over….”. Maybe Aspen and Vail have all English speaking employees. Will be interesting to get your report. Don’t forget!

I didn’t. I wish I had. We did visit Garden of the Gods, old Colorado Springs, drove all through Estes Park, went horseback riding a couple of times ……there is just so much to do there, and it is so OPEN - BIG SKY country! And there are no bugs! And no humidity! I think CO is becoming quite the retirement spot. Next time we go out (hopefully, spring break), I hope to do some skiing. Hopefully, you’ll be able to get to Pikes Peak soon (no offense, Rover)…
