From the article:

"Covington and Nohe agree that the high emotions regarding illegal immigration are more prevalent in some areas of the county such as the Gainesville District and parts of the Woodbridge District.

"I don't believe that it's a county-wide problem," Covington said.

Nohe said he believes transportation and education top the list.

"The majority of people in this county don't view immigration as their main issue," Nohe said."

And yet today's WashPo poll says that 50% of Prince William residents feel that immigration and illegal immigration is the NUMBER ONE problem.

Obviously Covington and Nohe are way out of touch with the citizens of this county.

Nohe ran unopposed. It's hard to get rid of them in that situation. :-)

The supervisors will vote the interests of their constituents or they will not be re-elected. Sure they should look out for the best interests of the entire county but the reality is, they need to respond to those who elect them first; the rest of the county second.

anonymoustoo: "Illegal immigration isn’t high priority for most mid-county residents."

I'm just curious as to how you came to that conclusion. I live in mid-county as well, and through talks with folks in my neighborhood I would come to the opposite conclusion.

True, we don't have the problems that Manassas City or MP does (yet), but the issue is gaining ground. And Marty should take heed. :)

Anyone can do this, although these "translators" clearly were there on behalf of Mexicans Without Borders.

The last thing I want to see is the taxpayers on the hook for providing translators at the polls, for however many new citizens can't be bothered to bring someone to assist them on their own. How many different languages would we then have to support at the polls?

Lafayette said on 15 Nov 2007 at 12:54 pm:
Red Woman,
I’ve voted 21 years at Stonewall, and this was the first time I’ve ever seen translators.

Does anyone know who "paid" for these translators to be at the poll or who sponsored them if they were not paid? I would think that would be in the job description of the poll workers and not have just anyone running around the machines. Who authorized them to be inside the voting area and approach people. Can just anyone approach a voter going into the booth and offer to assist them to make their vote. Again, this should be the responsibility of the staff appointed by the voting commisssion and not just any "Joe or Jose."

Medic64,
I don't disagree with anonymoustoo completely. I feel all neighborhoods deserve equal services. For months I've been saying we need stiffer Zoning LAWS, FINES, AND ENFORECEMENT. A fine should be imposed when a 30day follow up visit happens and the violation has not been taken care of. I would like to see one PCE Inspector in particular go to the right address, and do his job. We always have pictures of the violations that we call in here in WestGate. I'm not trying to be smart here. I just want my opinions clarified a little.
To those that have not had to deal with some of the problems we have, be thankful. It will land on your door step too. However, now with the resolution passed the "red carpet" is getting rolled up, hopefully you won't be plagued like we have.

IMHO, I do not think one particular neighborhood deserves anymore services than the next one does. I feel that an increase in housing inspectors to enforce code and ticket violators will be beneficial for ALL neighborhoods. I agree with anonyomoustoo on this one.

I also agree with Lafayette in regards to the votes. The individual supervisors can try to cater to their specific areas, but their vote does affect ALL of the county. I think they need to be fully aware of all of the situations throughout the county not just their own little section. What is one sections problem today, will be yours tomorrow.

Red Woman: Nor have I in 23 years of voting. You said what I was thinking - who needs a translator to translate names??? Sometimes on the bonds, though, I would like a lawyer in there with me - lol

Concerning John Cena from an earlier post above, what the WWE did RIGHT was put BOTH videos (the CNN edited and the non-edited) side-by-side on the webpage EXPOSING CNN for the liars that they are.

And I agree with Lafayette, though Nohe represents one segment of the Prince William County population, his votes (as do all of theirs) affect ALL of Prince William County, just like Ted Kennedy's votes affect me and I don't even live in his state nor have any intention to.

anonyomoustoo,
I and many other neighbors have been working very hard with Zoning, Building Code, Police Dept., and our Supervisor too. We have had actually seen improvements over the last few months. We have been and will continue to work hard. We have less overcrowding as the banks foreclose too.Did you have to see the number of homes own by the banks? They don't maintain the properties very well themselves. I would suggest going back and reading my posts. I have seen improvements, and I'm proud to say I had a large part in the ongoing improvements of WestGate.
I want are tax dollar to work hard for us. However, we will save money as the we have less illegal aliens to support. That will be a big savings to us all.

LaFayette,

Unfortunately for the residents of your community, you're going to have to work very hard individually and as a neighborhood in order to turn things around. My glance at LandRover reveals that a large portion of the homes on your street are owned by people with Hispanic surnames. You'll have to include these neighbors if you want to make lasting changes, not vilify them. There isn't enough money in the county's coffers to fix all the problems in Westgate. You and your neighbors will have to do most of the work.

When problems arise in Independent Hill, I expect zoning, building, and police resolution of those problems too. (And there have been isolated problems.) But...the main problem here is not one with illegal immigration, but instead with individual infractions of zoning and building codes. Most of our scofflaws have been white.

Just as you don't want to see your tax dollars going to pay for services for illegal immigrants, I don't want to see a disparate amount of my tax dollar going to one or two neighborhoods...particularly when the burden of turning those neighborhoods around will fall on the residents. I don't mind funding more zoning inspectors or neighborhood services employees to address legitimate problems but I'm not interested in spending money to harrass one segment of the population based on how they look or whether they speak English.

anonmousee...The mid county residents probably do not have to deal with the illegal issue like the rest of us do. They need to wake up because this is like a plague and WILL spread to their little part of the county.

Exactly Lafayette....The entire county needs to be considered

Human nature prevents some folks from seeing outside their little world. I agree with both of you. I will say that fiscal management needs to move up in some folks books as a real high priority next to immigration. You are both making the same point.

Our spending per student is just a tad higher than Prince George's County. Not a good reputation. Although, spending is not always a good indicator of quality, I think per pupil may be a good one when it comes to education. (except Washington DC!)

So if the spending is low per pupil and we are spending $37 million on ESOL and our revenues are dropping due to multiple issues in the lending market and the schools will take a hit - it's really all the same problem don't you think?

One issue may be more visual to each of us, but it's all tied together.

I would think that the same could be said for Supervisors Stewart and Stirrup. They need to be fiscally responsible for the sake of all county citizens.
