I find it interesting that the parent whose child brought home the article didn't immediately call the school to talk to the teacher. I rarely believe my own child's take on a situation. There is almost always more to a situation than comes home from the child's perspective.

Children learn by taking what they hear and applying it to their prior knowledge. If the child is hearing information that is one-sided at home (liberal or conservative,) then he may tune out information taught at school about the other side of the issue. In this case, the teacher makes clear that the lesson was compairing the opinions that can be found in the media and how we must be careful to consider the source of information. That's why getting facts from blogs such as these is very dangerous. Many have used a bit of information taken out of context and have made public education out to be the enemy of God-fearing, patriotic Americans.

I don't think so. Regardless of how this assignment is justified after-the-fact, the content and quality of this handout is absolutely atrocious. Fostering reasoned debate can only be done with quality material, not with this sort of useless drivel that is little more than a product of anti-Bush derangement syndrome.

We don't prompt discussions about race by handing out white supremacist literature, we don't inspire debate about the holocaust by passing out neo-nazi propaganda, and we don't foster understanding of the Iraq conflict by passing out Al-Quaeda recruitment videos. If you want to teach kids about both sides of a debate, you find the best material each side has to offer, and you work with that.

You cannot build strong minds with poor quality tools.

If this homework assignment is controversial, how do you all feel about the 2007 Senate Bill 777 which prohibits all classes, school activities, textbooks, and teachers from instruction that "reflects or promotes bias against homosexuals, transgenders, and bisexuals in public schools (including Kindergarten).
Sentate Bill 777 (already passed) also bans anything in public schools that could be interpreted as negative toward homosexuals and bisexuality.
This bill also "bans anything in public schools that could be interpreted as negative toward homosexuality and bisexuality. This bill bans "any text, reference or interpretation portraying marriage as only between man and a woman."
Books removing the words Mom and Dad will apparently go to press in January. Boys who feel they are girls, or girls who feel they are boys, will be allowed to use any restroom or locker rooms they choose. (Do you see any potential problems with this?)
Homecoming queens may be male and homecoming kings can be female, because it is hate speech to say that a King must be a guy and a Queen must be a girl. It is a bias against homosexuality and therefore hate speech.
This Bill is supported by the NEA (National Education Association).
So while this bill has been passed in California (and I believe some other states have or are following suit), it may soon be passed Nationwide.
This bill also bans ALL MATERIAL declaring that people are born male or female. (YES! This bill passed!)
Assembly Bill 394 was passed stating that teachers and parents with conservative, traditional lifestyles and beliefs who voice their opinions on these issues will be candidates for "Anti-harrassment" training. You cannot tell your child's teacher that you prefer your child to be taught that a mother and father are what constitutes parents. You may be reported and required to attend Anti-harrassment training.
Assembly Bill 14 Prohibits funding for any program not supporting a range of sexual practices, including state funded social services operated by churches, daycare, preschool, food and housing programs, job programs, senior services and hospitals. So the programs MUST state that they support homosexuality or their funding from the state of California will be pulled. Any textbooks stating the words MOM and DAD must be pulled out of schools because it is biased against the gay lifestyle and shows gender. This is a done deal in California. Not proposed. Done. Passed. Think it won't come to this state? Think again. Beginning in the fall of 2008 school text books will NOT reflect the words MOM and DAD even in grades as low as Kindergarten. California is the largest purchaser of textbooks, so the companies who publish these text books is taking the words out of ALL the textbooks... even YOUR child's textbooks. No longer will history books state something along the lines of "The men of Valley Forge..." but instead "The people of Valley Forge..." You cannot say "He rode his bike to school," but instead "It rode its bike to school."
Sports, locker rooms and bathrooms must now be all gender neutral.
The point is this.... if your child goes to Public School, you NEED to stay on top of what is going on in this country and don't just ASSUME that your values and beliefs are going to be supported. You need to know not only WHAT is being taught, but what is NOT being taught.
While we may not hate alternate lifestyles, we may not want to support these types of changes in our eduational system. Yet, it has happened already in California and some other states are following suit. Do you really want to be referred to as "it"? There will be no more Mr. and Mrs. titles.
This bill cannot be over ruled by the President because it was a state bill. It could have been over ruled by the Governor (Schwartzenneger) but he signed it into law.
If parents are not paying attention to these bills being passed, eventually it will hit enough states to be passed into Federal law and then it will be next to impossible to overturn.
So... heads up. Pay attention. Know what is headed to our public schools. Because even if you homeshool, your taxes are paying for these changes.

I voted for him the first time and realized I couldn't do it again more due to Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. Once I realized the type of person that was attracted to him I wasn't comfortable.

Then I found out that Scooter Libby's lawyer was also Mark Rich's lawyer. Thats when I became a Populist.

ateacher,

That is very sad, for someone to become so disallusioned because of our government policies. I hope his homecoming will be smooth.

One Voice,

I find it amusing that you and I have been the only 2 people who found something positive to say about President Bush. I publically admit to never having voted for the man. Go figure.

Whether or not one believes in homeschooling vs public education all I can say about Bush and his agenda, after years of his schooling my brother serving in Iraq (second tour) has come to the conclusion that the bigwigs in govt have used him and others who fight and earn salary less than the poverty level in income. Once he was career soldier, now he is a bitter boy only 32. Once he thought war was the "right" thing. He has seen more deaths in the past 15 months, than I can only imagine. He is coming home in a couple of weeks, and his wife and children are unsure of what his mood will be. How sad is that?

RMS Teacher,
I'm in total agreement with OneVoice & Princess above.
It sounds like you are right in line with my daughter reports from Stonewall Middle. Thank you!

The teachers in no way made their personal beliefs know to the students, and there was no discussion. I’d like to add she said she felt all of her teachers at SMS kept their beliefs out of the classroom. I was very pleased to hear this. I just thought some positive feedback might do some good.

RMS Teacher,

It sounds like a darn good assignment. Perhaps you could teach a night class for those adults who haven't mastered the objective of the assignment. Keep up the good work.

As the teacher accused of "dumpster diving", I will defend my actions as clearly and expeditiously as possible. This is the last I will comment on this.

The assignment given was not a "leftist attack" on George Bush. The standard addressed is as follows:

"The student will demonstrate knowledge of the political process at the local, state, and national levels of government by analyzing campaigns for elected office, with emphasis on the role of the media." C.E. 5c.

The case study chosen was that of the 2004 Presidential Election. In conjunction with this handout (which was not titled, except for my handwritten "Why Bush is a bad president"), I provided equal time and due diligence to this editorial:

http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2004/Sep-12-Sun-2004/opinion/24736642.html

Questions for each were not "agree/disagree?", but rather the following:

1. What party would each author most likely belong to?
2. What motivations would each author have in creating these editorials?

The very last thing I wanted to do was turn people for or against George Bush. My goal in this lesson was to get a group of young people to think about what they read BEFORE they form opinions on a reading topic bases solely on the author's slant.

Finally, I would like to say that I am commenting on this topic in this fashion solely because I feel as though the truth is far more important than blindly accusing people of actions before asking the people involved. As a public employee, I believe an explanation (not a debate. Again, I will post no further) is in order.

One Voice,

I think Pres Bush is probably a very sincere person. He has turned his life around from party boy to responsible parent and husband. Those are good characteristics.

Dittyman9,

Let's not take one supposed incident, that we have no official word on, and decide that all teachers do something like this. It simply isn't true.

Dittyman8 ,
I think you hit the nail on the head : Turn your statement into a question. THAT IS THE QUESTION.

What ever happenned to teaching skills and knowledge for life rather than passing out political propaganda at our schools? The teachers should be spending more time teaching the basics of how ourr government works.

I don't have the talent to homeschool particularly High School. I admire those that do. But please understand, sometimes it's not a choice - not everyone can or should take that on. I do however believe strongly that parents are the primary educator of their child(ren) not the schools. Back to personal responsibility.

Speaking of responsibility -- any facts on the Rippon incident?

I would say that Pres Bush is one of the best when it comes to interpersonal skills. He is warm in his address and appears sincere when meeting folks and introducing them. I do like that about him. He sure beats Cheney in that arena!

Ok, 24 hours has passed. What is the upshot of the Bush Sucks assignment? Surely someone has found out something. Inquiring minds want to know. Has the problem been settled to everyone's satisfaction?

Has Rippon been removed from the face of the earth? Has the errant teacher been hanged in the public square? Inquiring minds want to know.

While waiting for an answer, does anyone want to address any of the 'charges' made in that handout? What has President Bush done well?

Anon,

I don't think Krusty is necessarily saying parents shouldn't be forming pliable little minds, just that in any learning situation, that is what is happening, regardless of who is doing the teaching. Doesn't that sort of define learning, in the loosest sense of the word?

I could care less if people home school are not. Just don't talk down to me because I didn't. (not YOU personally)
